Two dead in tower crane collapse at Coleman Street - 30Sep2013
SINGAPORE: At least two men are dead following the collapse of a tower crane at the National Art Gallery construction site on Coleman Street on Monday morning, while three other workers have been seriously injured and are in hospital.
The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said that both workers who died in the accident were pronounced dead at the scene by trauma paramedics. Two other workers were taken by ambulance to Singapore General Hospital, and at least one worker went to Raffles Hospital near Bugis MRT station by himself.
Concrete slabs on the rear of the crane, which serve as counterbalance, came loose at about 10.32am and fell on to scaffolding in the worksite, eyewitnesses said. The National Art Gallery is at the site of the former City Hall and across Coleman Street from St Andrew's Cathedral.
Engineer Mr Kenneth, 40, told TODAY that the worker who died in the accident is a Thai national. Project manager Mr Gil, meanwhile, said that the crane was about to hoist construction materials when the concrete slabs fell, and he ran for cover just before when he heard a noise from above.
Both men did not want to be identified as their management is not speaking. The main contractor for the site is Takenaka.
The SCDF said they received a report of the incident at 11.33am. An SCDF K-9 unit was at the scene at around 1pm, but the dogs were not deployed to look for survivors within the affected area of the construction site.
The accident is not the first at the worksite near the Supreme Court. On July 25, a crawler crane tilted and its jib landed on Coleman Street, reportedly missing cars driving by.
Of that incident, the National Art Gallery said supervisors from the Takenaka-Singapore Piling Joint Venture took action to close off the street when they noticed the crane begin to dip and that there were no injuries or damage to vehicles in the vicinity.

Tanjong Pagar Info:
Tanjong Pagar (Jawi: تنجوڠ ڤاڬر) in Malay means cape of stakes, a name which reflects its origins as a fishing village situated on a former promontory. It has been surmised that the name was inspired by the presence of kelongs (offshore palisade fishing traps constructed using wooden stakes and cross pieces) set up along the stretch of coast from the village of Tanjong Malang to what is now Tanjong Pagar. It is possibly a corruption of the earlier name Tanjong Passar, a road which led from South Bridge Road to the fishing village and which appeared in George Drumgoole Coleman's 1836 Map of the Town.
A far more picturesque account of the naming of this part of the coast emerges from the realm of local legend. According to the Malay Annals, there was a time when the villages along the coast of Singapore suffered from vicious attacks from shoals of swordfish. On the advice of a particularly astute boy named Hang Nadim, the Sri Maharajah built a barricade of banana stems along the coast, which successfully trapped the attacking fish by their snouts as they leapt from the waters.
The original name for Tanjong Pagar is also said to be Salinter, a fishing village. When the Tanjong Pagar Dock Company (1864) was formed due to the growth of shipping activities in the 1850s, wharves were built. Tanjong is cape and pagar means fence or enclosed space, i.e. wharf where ships are moored. Tanjong Pagar probably refers to the location of PSA Gate 3 near Victoria Dock. Around Tanjong Pagar were mangrove swamps which were filled in with earth from Mount Palmer and other nearby small hills for extension of the wharves up to Telok Blangah.

Singapore crane collapse kills two workers
Originally published September 30, 2013
Two workers were killed and several injured when a crane collapsed at the National Art Gallery construction site on Coleman Street on Monday morning.
Reports said the crane was lifting a mini excavator at around 10.30am when the boom suddenly collapsed.
The boom and excavator fell to the ground, while concrete slabs attached to the rear of the crane came loose and fell on to scaffolding below.
The two workers were pronounced dead at the scene by trauma paramedics, according to the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF).
One of the dead workers was a Thai national, while the other was from Bangladesh. It is believed the dead and injured were struck by the falling concrete slabs.
Three other men were seriously injured and are being treated in hospital.
The National Art Gallery is at the site of the former City Hall and across Coleman Street from St Andrew's Cathedral.
The accident is the second crane collapse at the site in three months. On July 25, a crawler crane tilted and its jib landed on Coleman Street, narrowly missing passing cars.
