The Lighthouse in Colonia del Sacramento is worth a visit for an obviously great view of the surrounding area. The lighthouse was built in 1857 over the ruins of the San Francisco convent.
The lighthouse is normally open every day from 12 to 7pm.

Travel in Uruguay. Colonia del sacramento is a small charm town in Uruguay. Its renown for the 17th Century historic town, UNESCO World Heritage site. Easy to get there by ferry from Buenos Aires and 2~3hours bus from Montevideo. We spent 2days in this small town by the beach. Colonia del Sacramento, Uruguay Lighthouse
This is the Lighthouse of Colonia del Sacramento, Uruguay on June 20, 2011. It is located directly on the Río de la Plata (Silver River), and provided light to the ships on the river around southwestern Uruguay. The city itself is small and rustic, and the lighthouse has been updated and brought to standards many times. You can see the majority of the city from this point, as Colonia de Sacramento is a rather small village. At the base of the lighthouse toward the town are the ruins of a Convent of San Francisco that was opened in 1694 and burned down ten years later in 1704. This day was very windy, especially outside the top of the lighthouse nearly 80 feet (27 meters) up. You can see quite far out on the Río de la Plata (Silver River).
Esto es el faro de Colonia del Sacramento en la Uruguay en el 20 de junio de 2011. Está ubicado directamente junto al Río de la Plata, y proveía la luz a los barcos y los buques en el río alrededor del suroeste de Uruguay. El pueblo sí mismo es pequeño y rústico, y el faro se ha actualizado y se ha renovado para conformar con los estándares varias veces. Colonia del Sacramento in southwestern Uruguay is renowned for its historic quarter, a World Heritage Site. There is frequent ferry service across the Río de la Plata from Bunes Aires, with fast ferries completing the journey in just 50 minutes. The historical section of Colonia, which has some cobblestone streets built by the Portuguese in the 17th century, is within walking distance of the ferry terminal. Among the notable attractions around the tree-lined Plaza Mayor (main square) are:

URUGUAY DAY TRIP | Colonia del Sacramento Uruguay - UNESCO World Heritage Site
Day 3 in Argentina, and today we decided to hop on a ferry across the River Plata to the neighboring country of Uruguay! To be exact - we were visiting the quaint town of Colonia del Sacramento Uruguay.
Colonia del Sacramento is an hour and a half ferry ride. There are two companies that offer this service, and we picked Buquebus. It is a quick and easy day trip from Buenos Aires!
Colonia is a beautiful town, and rightly so, protected and designated as a UNESCO Heritage Site. Cobblestone streets are lined with sycamore trees, and in some places, there are beautiful old cars, too.
Our first stop was an ice cream shop - the dolce de leche ice cream was very good!
The lighthouse is one of the highlights of Colonia del Sacramento. It cost only USD1 to go up (cash only) - and it is much cheaper if you pay with USD instead of Uruguayan or Argentinian pesos!
Everywhere you go in Uruguay, they will accept these three currencies. Although in many places, the rates given is not the best!
We found a beach in Colonia! It was a small sandy beach, but nonetheless - a beach.
Colonia del Sacramento is definitely a great Buenos Aires day trip, and we highly recommend it. The roundtrip ferry ticket costs around 70 usd per person - Buquebus also offers 4-hr ferry ride to Uruguayan capital of Montevideo.

Colonia del Sacramento Historic District - Uruguay
