The Rose Garden at Colonial Park
The Rudolf W. van der Goot Rose Garden is one acre in size and contains more than 3,000 roses of 325 varieties. As an accredited All-America Rose Selections (AARS) display garden, it is entitled to display AARS award-winning roses one year before their release to the public. The garden was named in honor of Rudolf W. van der Goot, the first horticulturist with the Somerset County Park Commission, as a tribute to his efforts in designing and developing the garden.
The purpose of the garden is enjoyment and public education. From late spring through fall, the roses present a kaleidoscope of color, form, and fragrance. Visitors can view popular modern hybrids, species, and various classes of Old Garden Roses. All roses are clearly labeled for easy identification and only roses that thrive in central NJ are kept in the garden.
The Rose Garden and surrounding Arboretum were part of the original Mettler Estate, which was once a working farm. The first section of the garden was developed from features of the Mettler's formal garden. The flagstone walks and small stone pool are original to the estate. Today this part of the garden features modern hybrid roses, tree roses, and The Grandmother's Garden, a section planted with roses popular before World War II.
The second section of the garden is framed by a trellis, which supports a variety of climbing roses. The main feature of this garden is the central walk, named in honor of Millicent Fenwick, a New Jersey Congresswoman and United States representative to the United Nations Agencies for Food and Agriculture. The walk is planted with polyanthas and along the garden's perimeter are Old Garden Roses, which are regaining popularity with today's gardeners.
The Dutch Garden, which is the third section of the garden, is designed in the formal Dutch style; the raised beds are framed by low growing perennials. Here the collection of old roses is continued, along with modern hybrids.
A visit to the garden provides an excellent opportunity to learn about roses and the many varieties available. A visitor interested in adding roses to the home landscape can see the color, size, form, and quality of each rose variety and choose those most suitable for their own gardens. It is also a great place to get away from it all.
The Rose Garden is a popular location for wedding photography. Although wedding ceremonies are not permitted within the garden, pictures may be taken if a permit is first obtained from the Horticulture Department. Guided tours for groups can also be arranged for a modest fee.

Paranormal Investigation - The Devil Tree, New Jersey
We decided to take a quick little day trip to the Devil Tree in Basking Ridge, NJ . Hearing all the claims and legends, we decided to try to debunk a few of them. This is not a real investigation obviously, especially not the daylight and only half our crew, But some pretty interesting things happen.
The Devil's Tree is a solitary oak tree, with some dead limbs, growing in an undeveloped field on Mountain Road in the Martinsville section of Bernards Township in Somerset County, New Jersey, United States, across from a private housing development. Local legend suggests the tree is cursed: those who damage or disrespect the tree (usually by urinating on it, or making disparaging remarks about it while nearby) will soon thereafter come to some sort of harm, often in the form of a car accident or major breakdown as they leave.
Claims
Various legends surround the tree. A common claim is that Bernards Township was one of the central headquarters for the Ku Klux Klan in New Jersey and that the tree had been used to lynch African Americans and rebellious slaves since Colonial times. Another claim is that a farmer hanged himself from the tree after killing his family and that anyone trying to cut the tree down will come to an untimely end. Other legends surrounding the tree allege that visitors who get too close to the tree will get chased by a black Ford pick-up truck that will then disappear at a certain point, or that anyone who touches the tree will find that their hands have turned black if they try to eat at a restaurant.
In winter, the ground beneath the tree is allegedly free from snow, no matter how much has fallen or how recently. A nearby boulder called Heat Rock, and sometimes the tree itself, are said to be warm to the touch regardless of the season or time of day, and is claimed to be a portal to Hell.

Franklin Inn, East Millstone NJ
The historic Franklin Inn located in East Millstone NJ. First constructed as a farm house in 1734 and converted to an inn in 1752 it played its part in the Revolutionary War housing both the British commander and the American Generals at various times. It was refreshed in the early 90's and used as a book store. In recent years it has been condemned and the harsh elements have taken its toll on the old building as you can see in this video.

When attorney Francis Harrison Kinnicutt (1876-1939) commissioned the building of a home in Bedminster, he could think of none other than Franklin Nelson Breed, senior partner of the esteemed New York architectural firm of Breed, Fuller & Dick. Breed's design prowess manifested in an English Country House splendidly presiding over Kinnicutt's estate. The home was completed in 1928. After Kinnicutt's death in 1939, the main house had two other owners before being purchased by Oliver and Moira Filley in 1952 along with 27 acres. Land purchases over the years increased 'Oldacre' in size and its holdings reached 106 acres held in three parcels.
'Oldacre' comprises four residences, 3 ponds, barns, rolling lawns and abundant pastureland. Reigning at the summit of the 106 acres is the handsome English Country main residence with sweeping and dynamic views of the Bedminster countryside. Other structures include the beautifully updated and expanded 4 bedroom cottage, the 2-bedroom farmhouse and the barns. A detached 2 car garage with 1-bedroom apartment above and a Morton barn were added in the 1980's.
A Spanish tile roof and, stone and stucco siding envelope the manor home. The gracious limestone entry exudes warmth. A curved, floating staircase in the 21 feet high foyer dazzles the senses. The 17 room, 3-level home hosts 6 bedrooms, 5 full and 2 half baths, living room, banquet sized dining room, kitchen accompanied with breakfast room and butler's pantry, library, great room, playroom and au pair suite. High ceilings, French doors and panoramic windows accentuate the generously scaled rooms. Elegance and charm are presented in raised-panel wainscoting, arched doors, hand-hewn ceiling beams, and in the paneled walls with acorn leaf details. Period features include plaster walls, wide plank random-width floors and as many as seven fireplaces.
The 27 square mile picturesque countryside of Bedminster comprises mainly of horse farms. Equestrian trails dot the landscape. In addition to Oldacre's prime acreage, miles of adjacent dirt roads and trails for hacking lie on its periphery. A secluded and peaceful setting yet minutes to major highways, shopping and world class restaurants. New York City is less than an hour away.
