Colorado Railroad Museum #121
We have nearby The Colorado Railroad Museum in Golden Colorado and I decided to visit it. These are a few clips of what I saw there. In addition to railroad items, they have a Garden Railway plus a Live Steam loop and the Denver Model Railroad Club has an extensive layout in the basement. You should visit if you get the chance, there is way more to see than I had time to video.
5,500 SQ FT Model Train Layout! | Colorado Model Railroad Museum
SORRY FOR THE CRAPPY FILMING, CHECK OUT MY MY RECENT VIDEO OF THIS LAYOUT:
Extreme Trains:
Rave reviews from all over the world are flooding in about the Colorado Model Railroad Museum, located by the mainline of the Union Pacific Railroad in Greeley, Colorado. This one-of-a-kind facility features over 600 railroad-related artifacts ranging from a Virginia and Truckee Railroad switch key to a full-sized Colorado and Southern wooden Caboose available for examining both inside and out.
Designed to appeal to visitors of all ages and nationalities, the CMRM has set record attendance marks in its first four years of operation and has become the leading year-round tourist attraction in Weld County, Colorado. The highlight of the museum is its huge, 5,500 sq. ft. operating model railroad dubbed the finest model railroad I've ever seen, by the 30-year senior editor of Model Railroader magazine, Jim Hediger, Milwaukee, WI.
Visitors may actually stroll through this three dimensional creation while the railroad is in operation. They are surrounded by rugged mountains with handmade features including 16,000 fir, 8,000 deciduous and 4,000 aspen trees with rivers abound. Scenery becomes three dimensional art. The use of cameras is encouraged and guides are available to answer railroad-related questions and to point out unique aspects of this one-of-a-kind modeling wonder. Take a visual tour through this amazing railroad in miniature via the CMRM website, then plan of visiting the museum in person the next time you visit Colorado.

Colorado Railroad Museum in Golden
Robert W. Richardson and Cornelius W. Hauck opened the Colorado Railroad Museum in 1959. Then, and now, our mission is dedicated to preserving for future generations a tangible record of Colorado’s dynamic railroad era and particularly its pioneering, narrow gauge mountain railroads.
In 1964, the nonprofit Colorado Railroad Historical Foundation was formed to assume ownership and operation of the Museum.
HO Scale Layout at Colorado Railroad Museum
The HO Scale Layout at the Colorado Railroad Museum in Golden Colorado. By the Denver HO Scale Model Railroad Club. Has a small freight train and electric trolley than run for a few minutes when you put in a quarter. Also can put in quarter to see the carnival rides and N Scale train going around the carnival. Would be nice to see it when they have a running session with the other trains and sections of the layout. Has an extensive narrow gauge railroad but there was no way to operate that or see it moving when we were there.

Locomotive built in 1881 still pulling passenger trains.
Denver and Rio Grande Western #346 is one of the oldest operating steam locomotives in the United States. The narrow gauge locomotive built by Baldwin in 1881, still pulls occasional passenger trains at the Colorado railroad museum in Golden, Colorado. The large device at the top of the smoke stack is called a ridgway spark arrestor also know as a bear trap. It was designed to capture hot coal cinders where they went down a chute and later emptied. The locomotive looks very much like it did over 137 years ago.
Glenwood Canyon. Colorado
Glenwood canyon, Colorado, United States, 2005.
Glenwood Canyon is a rugged scenic 12.5 mi (20 km) canyon on the Colorado River in western Colorado in the United States. Its walls climb as high as 1,300 ft (396 m) above the Colorado River. It is the largest such canyon on the Upper Colorado. The canyon, which has historically provided the routes of railroads and highways through western Colorado, currently furnishes the routes of Interstate 70 and the Central Corridor between Denver and Grand Junction. The canyon stretches from near Dotsero, where the Colorado receives the Eagle River, downstream in a west-southwest direction to just east of Glenwood Springs, on the mouth of the Roaring Fork. Most of the canyon is in Garfield County, with the upper portion near Dotsero lying in Eagle County.
In 1906, the canyon provided the route of the Taylor State Road, a gravel road that was the first route for automobiles through the Colorado Rockies. The canyon also provided the route for the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad in the late 19th century. Through acquisitions, the line is currently part of the Union Pacific system. As Glenwood Canyon was one of the iconic scenic views along the California Zephyr passenger train, a monument to the dome car design was originally installed in the canyon. In the 1990s the monument was relocated to the Colorado Railroad Museum in Golden to make way for the construction of Interstate 70.
The canyon is widely considered one of the most scenic natural features on the Interstate Highway System of the United States. Foot access to the canyon is available at four rest areas along Interstate 70 in the canyon. The Hanging Lake Rest Area (Exit 125) provides access to the canyon along a stretch where I-70 is concealed in the Hanging Lake Tunnel.
The canyon was formed relatively recently in Pleistocene time by the rapid cutting of the Colorado down through layers of sedimentary rock. The upper layers of the canyon are sandstone from Pennsylvanian and Mississippian. Sections of the lower canyon walls are made of Cambrian rock. The Mississippian layer that is prominent throughout much of the upper rim sections of the canyon is part of the Leadville Formation.
