Tiny Rock Concert: Zachary Mowitz
Welcome to our first-ever Tiny Rock Concert. Our first concert is by Zachary Mowitz, Cellist, guest principal cello for week one of the 2019 Colorado Music Festival and acting section member in the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra.
Zach is playing the prelude from the first Bach Suite in G Major (which the next piece references) and Tango, by Ira J. Mowitz (Zach’s dad!), final movement of Suite for Solo Cello, which he says is an epic and virtuosic display of what a single instrument can convey. Think Piazzolla meets Bach!

PLAYING OUT: Joseph Galema (ft. Wil Smith) | Denver Philharmonic Orchestra (HD)
The walls will sing at Denver Philharmonic’s PULLING OUT ALL THE STOPS. The second concert in the DPO’s powerhouse season showcases the beautiful and historic Reuter pipe organ at Central Presbyterian Church. We road-tripped down to Colorado Springs to visit organist Joe Galema and the beautiful mid-century pipe organ at the U.S. Air Force Academy Cadet Chapel. And back in Denver, Central’s Presbyterian’s Director of Music Wil Smith gave us an exclusive tour of Central’s pipe organ — from the basement all the way up to the dusty loft where some 3,000 metal and wood pipes generate amazing sound. On Friday, November 18, Joe will perform two great works with the Denver Philharmonic — Francis Poulenc’s Organ Concerto in G minor and Camille Saint-Saëns’ Organ Symphony. PULLING OUT ALL THE STOPS also features Maurice Ravel’s bright and lyrical celebration of life “Le Tombeau de Couperin.”

J- I’m doing my best to fit in in Colorado, you know I’ve got my plaid shirt game on fleek. I’ve got all the plaids, red plaid, blue plaid, funeral plaid, wedding plaid. All the plaids!
-
*music playing*
C- Janae
J- Hey Chris!
C- What are you doing?
I was just about to conduct the Colorado Symphony, I’ve seen you, you make it look pretty easy, I figured I would give it a try.
C- Well actually, it takes a lot of work to become a conductor, you can’t just pick up your baton and start. Here, let me show you
*Chris conducts Colorado Symphony*
J- Will you teach me?
C- I can try
J- Okay
--
J- Hey there, I’m Janae Burris, Colorado comedian and I’m here today at Boettcher Concert Hall with Chris Dragon, Associate Conductor of the Colorado Symphony and he’s going to teach me how to be a conductor. Chris, I am very, very ready for this, so ready that I even brought my own baton…Ever heard of Star Wars?
C- Whoa, why don’t we focus on picking a piece of music.
J- Great, I’m already ready for that, I brought my mix tape, number 5 is my favorite track, I think you should play it in your car, that’s where it sounds the best
C- Maybe we should just start with some fundamentals
--
*training montage*
--
J- What’s one of the most challenging gigs you’ve ever had as a conductor?
C- Have you ever conducted an orchestra in a t-rex suit?
Together- Tiny arms, tiny arms
--
J- Have you ever been heckled before? Anyone from the audience just been like, “you suck!”
--
*conducting montage*
--
C- Just in the trumpets, on bar 94, let’s have more of a diminuendo between beats 2 and 3
J- Like make it bump though, like hit it hard, something I could drop it to
--
J- So what’s your plan b for this, when this inevitably falls apart
C- No plan B
J- Are you a chef maybe, a secret chef?
C- There is nothing else that I could do, waving a stick is probably the only talent
J- Where else can you even wave a stick?
--
So what do you call a cow with no arms and legs?
J- Hmm, uhm I don’t know?
Ground beef! Does it have to be clean or can I tell a dirty one?
--
J- Chris, do you think I’m ready?
C- Noooo. But we need to get back to work
J-Good enough, let’s do it
J- Nailed it!
Build Better Boettcher Hall Press Conference
The Colorado Symphony is one of the best orchestras in the United States. The Colorado Symphony is an enormous economic asset to the City of Denver and the State of Colorado, generating millions in revenue each year.
On Thursday, September 18, Colorado Symphony CEO and Board co-chair Jerome H. Kern presented a proposal for a repurposed, renovated concert hall. The plan envisions a modernized and upgraded building that allows for greater flexibility in programming and addresses critical issues of sound and structure.
A great symphony like a great sports team needs a great field to play on, Kern told an audience of media and community members. Boettcher Concert Hall has been the Colorado Symphony's home since it was built, and we're optimistic that this plan allows us to move into the future, so that it can remain the orchestra's home for another 35 years, at least.
