Durango's Top Summer Adventures - Rafting, Jeeping, & Mesa Verde National Park
Those seeking to get on the river for the first time or those looking to get their white water season off to a serene start, should consider rivers we would classify as “milder” options. These rivers typically have the Class I “moving water” to comfortably float down the river, some Class II “splashes” that get your legs wet just over the side of the boat, and potentially some Class III “wet and fun” that get you soaked head to toe! This is a great way to experience white water rafting in Colorado without getting in over your head. A mild option we provide in Colorado is the Lower Animas in Durango:
Ready for the next step up when it comes to white water rafting in Colorado? Steer towards a more intermediate river. These usually provide Class I “moving water”, Class II “splashes”, Class III “wet and fun”, and even some Class IV “big drops” which jump start your heart as you paddle through exciting whitewater. These rivers will keep you excited while you are able to take in some incredible scenery. These rivers can be more technical than the milder options, and they usually require a little more work as the guests must be willing to paddle. The payoff is very much worth it! The Upper Piedra River near Pagosa Springs is a great intermediate option:
Looking for the ultimate adventure that will make the hair on your arms stand up and your heart pump quickly? Then jump on the wild options of white water rafting in Colorado! The two rivers in Colorado we offer that we classify as high adventure are the Lower Piedra in Pagosa Springs and the Upper Animas in the Silverton area. The Upper Animas at high water, many consider to be the most difficult commercially run trip in the United States! Both of these areas provide Class II “splashes”, Class III “wet and fun”, Class IV “big drops” and Class V rapids that will get your adrenaline pumping and often need to be portaged. Both rivers you must be 16 years old and up and also in good health and physically fit. At Mild to Wild Rafting and Jeep Tours, we also take extra precautions on these rivers such as smaller guest to guide customer ratios, guides with more river miles than required by the state with trip leaders averaging 5,000 river miles for the Upper Animas, and have extra certifications such as wilderness safety. Other precautions we take include extra safety boats and required pre trip wetsuit fittings and practice swims. These rivers will leave you on top of the world!
On our Durango Jeep Tour you will see numerous wildflowers, high-alpine meadows, and avalanche gullies. Following the La Plata River (meaning “Silver” in Spanish) to La Plata City, an old mining town established in 1875, you’ll discover the remnants of old mining claims. These include a tall intact chimney left from the crew quarters, the framework of old cabins, and tailing piles from actual mining areas. Then, you’ll continue to the peak of Kennebec Pass at 12,000 feet above sea level (also above tree-line).
Explore Colorado’s most preserved mining sites and immerse yourself in the history of the American West. Tour into the Tundra high above Silverton, a world away from the stresses of modern life with waterfalls, mountain wildlife, beautiful vistas and Colorado’s famous wildflowers. A great trip for the whole family and kids are extra entertained with our Mild to Wild scavenger hunt. Find the items on the checklist and get some fool’s gold!
A true Durango vacation is not complete without a day at Mesa Verde National Park. Relive history on our Mesa Verde Discovery Tour. Discover the rich culture and architecture of the Ancestral Puebloans on a small, guided interpretive tour. Explore Cliff Palace and Spruce Tree Cliff Dwellings. Take in 700 years of history on the Mesa Loop. Explore the museum and Visitor’s Center and enjoy a delicious, deli-style lunch.

Telluride In the Morning - Harley Ride
Morning Harley Ride through Telluride, Colorado. October 2015
This town has a lot of character and charm. And history. And possibly the best PIZZA I've ever eaten! (Brown Dog).
Telluride sits at 8750ft elevation, surrounded by mountains on three sides. Visually, It's pretty cool. My favorite part of this video is the cute houses and fall colors at the very end of the clip.
Animas Forks Ghost Town, Colorado
A 360 degree view from the Animas Forks ghost town in Colorado, located at 11,200 feet. Animas Forks was in disrepair when I visited in 2001 and 2003. I didn't visit again until 2012, and then again in 2013, and there were dramatic improvements even in one year, thanks to donations and the work of local volunteers. Animas Forks is accessible in good weather by most 2wd vehicles, if you come from Silverton. Coming in from any other direction may require 4wd, or at least high clearance 2wd and some skill.
The town's first log cabin was built in 1873 and by 1876 the community had become a bustling mining community. At that time the town contained 30 cabins, a hotel, a general store, a saloon, and a post office. By 1883 450 people lived in Animas Forks and in 1882 a newspaper, the Animas Forks Pioneer, began publication and lasted until October 1886. Every fall the residents of Animas Forks migrated en masse to the warmer town of Silverton. In 1884 a 23-day blizzard inundated the town with 25 feet (7.6 m) of snow, the residents had to dig tunnels to get from building to building. Mining, speculation and processing mills helped Animas Forks grow.
When mining profits began to decline investment in Animas Forks was no longer justified. Although mining made a brief 1904 rebound with the construction of the Gold Prince Mill the town's mining days were nearing an end. A rail line ran through the area and stimulated interest in mining in the community again but the railroad never reached its expectations. The Gold Prince Mill closed in 1910 and in 1917 most of the mill's major parts were removed for a new facility in Eureka. The mill's dismantling signaled the beginning of the end for Animas Forks. The town was a ghost town by the 1920s.
The site continues as a tourist attraction. A Colorado State Historical Fund grant to San Juan County, in cooperation with the Bureau of Land Management, provided for stabilization of the remaining structures in 1997 and 1998.
The site is managed collaboratively by the Bureau of Land Management and San Juan County, which provide interpretive brochures and maps at an adjacent parking area.
Bryce Canyon ATV Adventures
A condensed version of our 3-hour guided tour from ATV Adventures. None of us had ever ridden before so we figured a guided tour was the best option for our first adventure. No ATVs are allowed in the National Park so you ride a few miles west on public trails and riverbed, but the scenery is still spectacular with many hoodoos and formations similar to the canyon.
Word to the wise. You probably have never been so dusty as you will be after a few hours in the desert on an ATV. If you don't have a bandanna, spend the dollar and buy one at the rental desk. Also bring water. You stop a couple times to stretch, hydrate and take pictures.

Camping Trip to Custer, SD - Estes Park, CO - Ouray, CO
This is a photo / video log of our (trailer) camping trip. We visited Bailey, CO, Custer State Park, Mt. Rushmore, biked the Mikelson Trail, saw buffalos, deer, and other critters. Next we headed to Estes Park with the intention of seeing Rocky Mountain National Park. Wound up getting caught in Colorado's flood and were trapped there for three days. A single road through RMNP opened up and we escaped to a campsite on Shadow Mountain Lake in the Arapaho National Recreation Area. Had a couple days of good weather / good kayaking.
From there we headed south to Ouray, CO for some off rd. sightseeing.
