Shirakawa-Go Ogimachi Winter Part I - Gifu - 白川郷 - 4K Ultra HD
Gifu Shirakawa-Go Ogimachi Winter Part I - 白川郷 - 4K Ultra HD : Declared a UNESCO world heritage site since 1995, Shirakawa-Go is one of the hottest Japanese tourist spots that is hard to miss. Located in the remote mountains of Gifu prefecture, Shirakawa-Go is famous for its traditional gassho-zukuri farmhouses with some as old as 250 years.
Shirakawa-Go’s most famous village, and the one featured in this video, is named Ogimachi which not only features an open air museum but also many gassho-zukuri farmhouses that are still used by villagers today.
Designed to withstand harsh winter conditions they are made entirely of wood with thatched roofs, and constructed without the use of a single nail!
Gorgeous all year long, winter gives this place a unique perspective that can not be missed offering, for a few days each year, the chance to enjoy the village at night with special illuminations.
However, and due to the overwhelming popularity of the place, the village looks more like Shibuya on a sunny Saturday afternoon or evening with literally several thousands of tourists from across the world crawling all over the place. We had the chance to visit the Ogimachi village ten years ago during the week in spring where tourists are usually busy visiting other places in Japan, and, if you can, we would highly recommend you skip Shirakawa-Go and its village during the winter and give the place a try during the less crowded seasons.

Shirakawago Village, Gifu in 4K - 白川郷●岐阜 - Japan As It Truly Is
Shirakawago in Gifu is a rare look at a Japan from the distant past. You can see all the best of this farmhouse village right here.
Shirakawago (白川郷) is very famous for its Gassho Zukkuri, or steep thatched roof houses. Imagine a Japan centuries ago, with no electricity, no internet, radio, TV, cars, trains, or anything else modern that you take for granted. And little news from the outside world coming in. Not to mention bitter winters with snow piling up as high as you are. To deal with the heavy snow, the farmhouses are built so they won't hold the snow, and the thick layer keeps the heavy rains of Japan out as well.
Shirakawago, along with a similar village, Gokayama in Toyama, are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Ogimachi in Shirakawago is the biggest with around 152 households and a population of 634 people. Gokayama has far fewer tourists, but is also more trouble to get to.
Shirakawago has become an enormously popular place to visit, and you will find huge crowds of day tripping tourists until the last bus leaves for the day (mostly about 5:30 PM). Those choosing to stay overnight at one of the farmhouses will find a totally different, silent atmosphere after that.
Most people going to Shirakawago are en route to Kanazawa or Takayama. You can leisurely see Shirakawago in just a few hours. One of the best views is the village overlook, which you can reach by bus (¥200 one way) or climb up in about 20 minutes. The path is closed during heavy snow.
There is no rail access to Shirakawago - the only way in or out is by bus (not covered by the full JR Rail Pass, but is covered by the Takayama-Hokuriku Area Tourist Pass, the Shoryudo Highway Bus Ticket, and some others), or by rental car. By bus, most people travel from Takayama or Kanazawa.

Shirakawa-go is located in the north-western part of Gifu Prefecture, in the approximate center of Japan. The name “Shirakawa-go” is taken from the traditional Japanese name for the region used in ancient times. It equates to the modern administrative area of “Shirakawa Village”. Additionally the village is situated in a wider historical region known as “Hida”. Today, the names are often combined, giving the name “Hida Shirakawa-go”.

■TripNotes
Spot1:Shirakawa-go
Shirakawa-go has been designated as a world heritage site by UNESCO because of the traditional Japanese homes called Gasshou-zukuri. It is fascinating how homes and nature at Shirakawa-go blend in with each other so beautifully.
Slip back in time to experience old Japan by spending a night at a gasshou-zukuri guest house and trying some traditional Doburoku sake.
Spot2:Takayama City (Jinya/Nakabashi)
The city of Takayama is known for its historical buildings, traditional crafts and hot springs. Experience walking through the Edo period by taking a stroll on Sanmachi-dori, an old-styled street. The red Nakabashi bridge over the Miyakawa river is a symbol of Takayama city. The place is also well-known for cherry blossom viewing. Takayama Jinya, which served as a city hall back in the Edo period is a recommended photo spot.
Food:Hida Beef Burger
The Hida Beef Burger has a 100% beef patty made from Hida Beef, a brand of Japanese beef from Gifu prefecture. The steak-styled texture and umami flavor will surely satisfy your palette. This is one of the famous local dishes of Takayama. Lose yourself into the umami flavored Hida beef.

Hida Furukawa, Takayama, Japan, 飛騨古川 - Canon 80D - Virtual Trip
Lost in Gifu prefecture, just 15 minutes by train from Takayama city in Japan, the small town of Furukawa is a real pearl not to be missed. The peaceful atmosphere of the place will not leave you indifferent. The carpenters of Hida Furukawa, like those of Takayama, have worked on the construction of important temples throughout the region, and in the small town of Furukawa, as in Takayama, there are alleys with traditional wooden houses bearing the same names: ichi-no-machi, ni-no-machi and san-no-machi.

Monet's Pond & Gujo Hachiman in Gifu - My Japanese Univeristy Life | モネの池 & 郡上八幡 - 岐阜県 - 日本で留学生の生活
This time we're exploring Gift Prefecture. We started off with a place known as Monet's Pond. This small unnamed pond has gained popularity due to its striking similarity to the works of Claude Monet. We then followed the clear mountain rivers to the famous town of Gujo Hachiman.
What do you guys think? Does this place stack up to Monet's masterpieces?
