Italy’s Verona, Padova, and Ravenna
Rick Steves' Europe Travel Guide | In the shadow of Venice, we visit three great cities in the Veneto area. Padova is famed for its venerable university, precious Giotto frescoes, and pilgrim-packed basilica. Verona is a hit with aficionados of Roman ruins and Romeo and Juliet fans. And Ravenna, with its shimmering mosaics, was once the western bastion of the Byzantine Empire. We enliven each stop with a tasty dose of Italian dolce vita.

PARMA - Italy Travel Guide | Around The World
From the train station it is an easy walk into the historic city center. The train ride from Bologna to Parma is about one hour and there is a shuttle service from the Bologna airport to the Bologna train station. Milan is also less than two hours north of Parma along the A1 autostrada, or a 45 minute train ride on the freccia bianca inter city trains.
Virtually everything in the historic city center is within easy and leisurely walking distance. Sites across the river require a little more walking but still not too much. The terrain is flat and biking is very popular among the locals. Taxis are easily available at the train station and across the street from the Governor's Palace in the center of town. There are rental cars at the small airport just outside town. Parking can be a challenge downtown, however there are several parking garages outside the city center, the largest is behind Teatro Due. The city has an access control system which limits entrance to the city center to local tagged vehicles only. This system is generally switched off after midnight. There is an extensive local bus line.
The Museo Glauco Lombardi is a particularly interesting and well done museum documenting the life of Maria Luigia, second wife of Napoleon Bonaparte and the Duchess of Parma. The museum is very personal and engaging with many artifacts and belongings of the gifted, talented and well educated Maria. Well worth the visit.
The Piazza Duomo is where you'll find the city's cathedral and the baptistry, both built in the late 12th century. The baptistry was designed by Benedetto Antelami and is constructed from a pink marble called rosso di Verona. The marble appears to change color depending on how the sun hits it. It is one of the most recognized medieval structures in the country. The frescoes inside the building are very moving, as well as the relief sculptures on the interior stone. Cathedral is free but the baptistery costs a steep €6.
Piazza Giuseppe Garibaldi (Garibaldi Square) is where the original Roman Colony, founded in 183 BC had a forum. The square served as a road hub over the Roman road, Via Aemilia. Today the modern square contains shops and restaurants, as well as the Palazzo del Governatore (Governor's Palace), with a facade dating to 1760 and an astronomical clock. The 13th century Palazzo del Municipio (Town Hall) is also on the square.
The Palazzo della Pilotta, named for the Basque ball game pelota once practiced in one of the courtyards, is a sixteenth century complex of buildings constructed as court to the famed Renaissance Farnese family. It was said to be one of the finest in all of Italy. The Palazzo della Pilotta houses the historic Baroque style theatre, Teatro Farnese.
Attend the opera at the gorgeous and world famous Teatro Regio known for its passionate and critical local opera aficionados. Buy tickets early as the opera is extremely popular in Parma and tickets sell out early. The Festival Verdi celebrates the famous and adored Parma resident Giuseppe Verdi throughout the month of October every year.
Venice Italy - Tour the Hidden Parts of Veneza Italia
Tour Some of the Hidden Parts of Venice Italy on our Venice Tour of Italy. Our Veneza Italia tour travel guide features some hidden parts of the city of Venezia, Italia as well of some of the mainstream Venice attractions. Venice highlights include the gardens of the Biennale Exhibition of Modern Arts, Palladio’s Church of San Pietro in Castello, the Naval Museum with a model of the Bucintoro (Doge’s Boat) and the Pavilion of Gondolas housing Peggy Guggenheim’s own vessel.
Venice Guide
The Veneto, the mainland province around Venice, takes its name from the Veneti, the pre-Roman inhabitants of the region. The region bore the brunt of fierce and destructive barbarian attacks that began in the 4th century. Fleeing the Goths, the people of the Veneto sought refuge among the wild and uninhabited islands of their marshy coast.
Building on a patchwork of more than 100 low-lying islands in the middle of a swampy lagoon they formed villages and the city of Venice rose in 421 AD. By the 13th century Venice ruled Byzantium. At its height, Venice was one of the greatest military and commercial powers on earth. In population it was four times the size of Rome and London combined. In 1508 the Pope, the kings of France and Spain and the Holy Roman Emperor joined forces to stop the advances of this powerful empire.
Venice Tour Video
Although her expansion was halted, the city of Venice continued to dominate the eastern Mediterranean for another 200 years. In 1846 Venice lost its isolation when a causeway joined the city to the mainland and the Italian rail network. The region's architecture, paintings and way of life reflect the splendor of Venice and the impact she had on the world. In addition to being home to magnificent art and architecture, Venice and the Veneto are laced with an exceptional network of navigable canals and waterways. In the lagoons and canals of Venice, one sails past colourful waterfront houses, under Renaissance bridges and close to magnificent historic sites such as St. Mark's Cathedral.
Known to Venetians as Canalazzo, the Grand Canal weaves its way through Venice's six districts or sestieri following the course of an ancient river bed. The two-mile-long Grand Canal serves as the city's main thoroughfare. Its average depth is 9 feet and the width varies from 120 to 228 feet. On its borders are some of the finest palaces of the Republic
Our Cruise in Venice, Italy
When it comes to river cruises, Italy is a country seemingly designed to host them. Its beautiful canals and rivers pass through diverse landscapes and nature en route, from picturesque lagoon islands with their colourful houses, to wild beach dunes and pine woods with an abundance of birdlife.
These waterways were once the ancient trade routes used by the Romans and the early Mediterranean settlers before them, and cruises around Italy are perfect for gaining a real insight into the many cultures - including Roman, Etruscan, Istrian, Byzantine and of course Renaissance - which have influenced the arts, architecture and history of the region over many centuries.
Throughout the season the 20 passenger La Bella Vita provides Italian river cruises that encompass the romance and architecture of Venice as well as the captivating lakeside setting of the Renaissance city of Mantua. Venice is, of course, the crowning jewel of most Italian river cruises, but Mantua, in central northern Italy, has also been (and still is) a hub of art, culture and music for centuries. The route inland takes you along the River Po and the Bianco Canal through the Po Valley.
Delicious seafood, local culinary specialities, fine wines and attentive service complete the experience of this fairytale adventure, and explain the appeal of our boutique Italian river cruises. Luxuriating in a friendly and relaxing boat environment, travellers have an opportunity for a unique perspective on some magnificent Italian cities.
La Bella Vita is a stylish twenty-passenger vessel offering comfortable, fully air-conditioned accommodation. She has two upper deck junior suites and eight lower deck staterooms, all offering en suite facilities, and a bright, spacious dining room and bar area where delicious Italian specialities will be served. Louvre doors open to the side to give a perfect view. Above, there is a huge sun deck with comfortable loungers to relax on with a drink and a good book, or just watch the world go by.
What is hotel barging?
Despite the growing popularity of cruising, especially on large river vessels, hotel barging is still a little known niche concept. Most hotel barges started life as cargo vessels but have since been painstakingly converted to offer luxury boutique accommodation for small groups of up to 20 passengers.
Guests enjoy an intimate atmosphere, high levels of personal service and immersion into the culture, history and gastronomy of regions.

Trip to Italy :
About Italy –
Italy is one of the most visited countries in all of Europe, known for its fascinating cities, ancient sights, cultural treasures, and beautiful scenery. There are so many choices for travelers it's hard to know where to begin. Many people start with the major cities of Rome, Venice, Florence, Milan, and Naples. Others, seeking something a little different, head for Sicily, the Amalfi Coast, or the Cinque Terra to hike between the hillside villages that line the coast. Italy's landscape offers a diverse mix of mountains, islands, beaches, and rolling countryside, which also provide a plenitude of recreational opportunities.

Trip to Italy :
Rome, where tourists often begin their trip, is one of the great cities of the world. It is home to such famous attractions as the Colosseum, the Pantheon, and the ancient Roman Forum. But beyond these well known sights, it also holds great collections of art, both in the museums and decorating the wall of churches, along with incredible architecture, which can be seen in its churches, palaces, and monuments. The Trevi Fountain, Spanish Steps, Palatine Hill, and the National Monument to Victor Emmanuel II are just some of the highlights.
Trip to Italy :
Venice offers a completely different experience. Perhaps one of the world's most romantic destinations, the city is more about atmosphere than individual attractions. Strolling along the Grand Canal, looking out from one of the many bridges, or floating along on a gondola ride, it is easy to appreciate Venice's charm. Nonetheless, there are some must see attractions, which include the Doges Palace, Basilica of St Mark, the Colleoni Monument, the Campanile, and numerous other palaces and churches.
Trip to Italy :
One of the most popular regions in Italy is Tuscany. At the heart of this area is Florence, another of Italy's not to be missed cities, with some of the country's most beautiful architecture and important cultural treasures. Other favorite destinations in Tuscany include the towns and cities of Siena, Pisa, San Gimignano, Cortona, and Lucca.
Travelers looking to fully explore Italy may also want to venture out to the islands of Sicily and Sardinia, both of which attract large numbers of visitors during the summer months. Near the city of Naples is the incredible archeological site of Pompeii. In the north of the country, those with an eye for fashion will not want to miss a stop in Milan.

Best Time to Travel in Italy –
The best months for traveling in Italy are from April to June and mid-September to October—temperatures are usually comfortable, rural colors are richer, and the crowds aren’t too intense. From July through early September the country’s holiday spots teem with visitors. May and June usually see the highest hotel prices in Rome and Florence.
August is the worst month in most places: Not only does it get uncomfortably hot, muggy, and crowded, but seemingly the entire country goes on vacation, at least from August 15 onward—and many Italians take off the entire month. Many family-run hotels, restaurants, and shops are closed (except at the spas, beaches, and islands, where most Italians head). Paradoxically, you will have many urban places almost to yourself if you visit in August—Turin and Milan, in particular, can seem virtual ghost towns, and hotels there (and in Florence and Rome) are heavily discounted, Just be aware that fashionable restaurants and nightspots are usually closed for the whole month.
