Crossing from Oregon into Washington over the Columbia River (drive-lapse, Oct 2018)
The Astoria-Megler Bridge opened in 1966 and is the longest continuous truss bridge in North America, and was the final segment of U.S. Route 101 to be completed between Olympia, Washington, and Los Angeles, California.
This is an instrumented and mapped #dashcam #drivelapse at 3X speed, driving along US Route 101 northbound through Warrenton, Oregon, across the New Youngs Bay Bridge, through Astoria, Oregon, across the #AstoriaMeglerBridge into Washington State, turning onto Washington State Route 401, continuing alongside the Columbia River for a bit, then ending just past Dismal Nitch.
Recorded on a cloudy day, October 29, 2018. Music licensed from Audiomicro.com.
The camera used didn't have stabilization, so the video was stabilized after the fact through software, which gives the cloudy sky a bit of a weird look sometimes. On parts of the bridge the interval of the guardrails interacts with the framerate and speed of the video to produce some interesting effects.

Multnomah Falls is a waterfall on the Oregon side of the Columbia River Gorge, located east of Troutdale, between Corbett and Dodson, along the Historic Columbia River Highway.
The falls drops in two major steps, split into an upper falls of 542 feet (165 m) and a lower falls of 69 feet (21 m), with a gradual 9 foot (3 m) drop in elevation between the two, so the total height of the waterfall is conventionally given as 620 feet (189 m). The two drops are due to a zone of more easily eroded basalt at base of the upper falls.
The Union Pacific Railroad is a freight hauling railroad that operates 8,500 locomotives over 32,100 route-miles in 23 U.S. states west of Chicago, Illinois and New Orleans, Louisiana. The Union Pacific Railroad network is the largest in the United States and employs 42,600 people. It is also one of the world's largest transportation companies.

SIX THINGS I LOVE ABOUT DRIVING EAST FROM PORTLAND, OREGON
Today's Journey
There are six things that I love about leaving Portland and heading west on Interstate Highway 84:
1. The River Views
Interstate Highway 84 crosses several small rivers and streams, but primarily I am referring to the views of the massive Columbia River for over 100 miles of driving.
2. The Rain
I don't love the rain; rather, I love the fact that the farther east I travel, the less rain there is. It rains a lot in Portland and I look forward to getting out of it.
3. You can See for Miles
It doesn't take many miles of driving east before you can start to see farther and farther up river. By the time you get past The Dalles, you can literaly see for 20-30 miles ahead.
4. The Geology
Long before recorded history, the Columbia River cut it's way through the Cascade Mountains along this route. You can see the effects of that as you drive through The Gorge area.
5. The Dams
There are several hydroelectric dams on the Columbia River and some of them can be seen on this drive.
These are impressive works that supply electrical power to the region.
6. The View from Deadman Pass
We won't be able to see the view today because it'll be dark by the time we climb up to Deadman Pass just a few miles southeast of Pendleton.

Multnomah Falls and Vista House | The American Empress
Just beyond Portland city limits, a breathtaking roadway stretches along America’s most scenic landscape. The Old Scenic Highway was built in 1913 and is known as one of the greatest engineering feats. The “King of Roads” weaves high into the bluffs towards Crown Point, through towering forest and breathtaking waterfalls. Before arriving at the Point, we’ll pull off the highway for a scenic stop at the Women’s Forum State Scenic Viewpoint. Here, guests can capture a perfect photo from the most widely photographed vantage point of the Columbia River Gorge below. As we reach our destination, aptly named for its unique formation and created over 14 million years ago by a lava flow, Crown Point offers a view fit for a king or queen.
At the height of the bluff sits Vista House, perched above the Columbia River. Vista House offers a panoramic view of the breathtaking Columbia River more than 700 feet below. Built in 1916 and known, not only for its magnificent views, but also for its unique octagonal shape. This overlook contains a gift shop and interpretive displays exhibiting the historic and geological points of interest in the area.
As we return to the Scenic Highway we will continue to Oregon’s highest waterfall, and perhaps the most picturesque, Multnomah Falls, where guests can get a breathtaking look at the waterfall, and shop in the unique gift shop. This roaring 611-foot natural wonder demonstrates the power and beauty of nature in her rawest form. Watch in awe as this mighty waterfall crashes down on the rocky cliffs below, spraying a peaceful mist on all those surrounding. Continuing on the Scenic Highway, get a picture-perfect view of more waterfalls as they spring from the bluffs along the picturesque roadway and offer rare glimpses of these geological wonders.

Grant's Getaways: Rice NW Museum of Rocks & Minerals
A gemstone and mineral collection in Washington County has been a drawing card for rock hounds for more than four decades. Grant McOmie visits the Rice NW Museum of Rocks and Minerals to see and learn how and why the location has gained national fame when the home that houses the museum was listed on the Federal Historic Registry. It's not only the vast collection of priceless stones and gems but the house whose walls are paneled in Oregon myrtlewood and other exotic northwest treasures that make the stop a favorite of thousand each year.

Oregon - United States
Oregon is a state in the Pacific Northwest of the United States. It is bordered on its west by the Pacific Ocean, north by Washington, south by California, east by Idaho, and southeast by Nevada. The Columbia River delineates much of Oregon's northern boundary, the Snake River largely its eastern.
Oregon's area was inhabited by many indigenous tribes before traders, explorers, and settlers arrived. An autonomous government was formed in Oregon Country in 1843, Oregon Territory was created in 1848, and Oregon became the 33rd state on February 14, 1859.

High-speed train through the Columbia Gorge
I shot this clip from the back window of Amtrak's Empire Builder eastbound through the Columbia gorge in Washington state in July, 2010. I reversed the clip and sped it up 200%, so this is what 120mph would look like.
The train was near Lyle, Washington, between Wishram and Pasco at the time.
What you see in order on the video is the parking lot at Dougs Beach, the new Lyle siding, a tunnel and old Lyle (sidings used to store cars), Klickitat River bridge, Chamberlain Lake causeway. The second tunnel after the causeway is under the Hwy 14 rest area. You pass by a series of basalt pillars just before heading out onto the Rowland Lake causeway where the video ends.
MOUNT HOOD NATIONAL FOREST USA
Mount Hood and the Columbia Gorge symbolize the natural beauty of Oregon, yet much of these amazing landscapes remain unprotected. The mountain's high-elevation snowfields have received Wilderness designation, but the more biologically diverse lower flanks and surrounding ridges remain unprotected. Through cutting-edge technology and the efforts of more than 500 volunteers, Oregon Wild has identified unprotected natural areas in the Mount Hood National Forest over the past decade and sought federal Wilderness designation to preserve them.
In January 2009, Oregon Senators Ron Wyden (D) and Jeff Merkley (D) introduced legislation that would give Wilderness protection to 127,000 acres and designate 80 miles of rivers around Mount Hood and in the Columbia Gorge as Wild and Scenic Rivers.
The compromise plan includes the scenic canyons along White River, the biologically diverse forests of Fifteenmile Creek, the old-growth forest surrounding Roaring River and the beautiful whitewater of the East Fork of the Hood River.
The Lewis and Clark Mount Hood Wilderness is an important step toward preserving the scenic beauty, biodiversity, clean drinking water and unparalleled recreational opportunities for future generations of Oregonians.
