Driving Downtown - Columbia South Carolina USA - Season 1 Episode 5.
Starting Point: Main St
Highlights include Main St - Sumter St (USC) - Assembly St - Gervais St - Lady St - Washington St - Hampton St - Taylor St - Blanding St.
Columbia is the capital of and largest city in the U.S. state of South Carolina, with a population of 129,272 as of the 2010 United States Census. As of July 1, 2013, the city's population was estimated to be 133,358 (U.S. Census Bureau, July 2014 release). The name Columbia was a poetic term used for the United States, originating from the name of Christopher Columbus. Columbia is home to the University of South Carolina, the state's flagship and largest university, and is also the site of Fort Jackson, the largest United States Army installation for Basic Combat Training. In 1860, the city was the location of the South Carolina Secession Convention, which marked the departure of the first state from the Union in the events leading up to the Civil War.
Downtown revitalization
The city of Columbia has recently accomplished a number of urban redevelopment projects and has several more planned.[27] The historic Congaree Vista, a 1,200-acre (5 km2) district running from the central business district toward the Congaree river, features a number of historic buildings that have been rehabilitated since its revitalization begun in the late 1980s. Of note is the adaptive reuse of the Confederate Printing Plant on Gervais and Huger, used to print Confederate bills during the American Civil War. The city cooperated with Publix grocery stores to preserve the look. This won Columbia an award from the International Downtown Association.[28] The Vista district is also where the region's convention center and anchor Hilton hotel with a Ruth's Chris Steakhouse restaurant are located. Other notable developments under construction and recently completed include high-end condos and townhomes, hotels, and mixed-use structures.
The older buildings lining the Vista's main drag, Gervais, now house art galleries, restaurants, unique shops, and professional office space. Near the end of Gervais is the South Carolina State Museum and the EdVenture Children's Museum. Private student housing and some residential projects are going up nearby; the CanalSide development[29] at the site of the old Central Correctional Institution, is the most high profile. At full build-out, the development will have 750 residential units and provides access to Columbia's waterfront. Lady Street between Huger and Assembly streets in the Vista and the Five Points neighborhood have undergone beautification projects, which mainly consisted of replacing curbs and gutters, and adding brick-paved sidewalks and angled parking.
Economy
Columbia enjoys a diversified economy, with the major employers in the area being South Carolina state government, the Palmetto Health hospital system, Blue Cross Blue Shield of South Carolina, Palmetto GBA, and the University of South Carolina. The corporate headquarters of Fortune 1000 energy company, SCANA, are located in the Columbia suburb of Cayce. Other major employers in the Columbia area include Computer Sciences Corporation, Fort Jackson, the U.S. Army's largest and most active initial entry training installation,[25] Richland School District One, Humana/TriCare, and the United Parcel Service, which operates its Southeastern Regional Hub at the Columbia Metropolitan Airport. Major manufacturers such as Square D, CMC Steel, Spirax Sarco, Michelin, International Paper, Pirelli Cables, Honeywell, Westinghouse Electric, Harsco Track Tech, Trane, Intertape Polymer Group, Union Switch & Signal, FN Herstal, Solectron, and Bose Technology have facilities in the Columbia area. There are over 70 foreign affiliated companies and fourteen Fortune 500 companies in the region. The gross domestic product (GDP) of the Columbia metropolitan statistical area as of 2010 was $31.97 billion, the highest among MSAs in the state.[26]

Cannonball Run record: Trio drives across U.S. in 27 hours
Last month, a seemingly unbeatable record was broken. Three car enthusiasts made it from a garage in New York City to a hotel in Redondo Beach, California, in 27 hours and 25 minutes, shaving more than an hour off the old mark, set in 2013. Dana Jacobson reports on the real-life version of the 1981 slapstick comedy “Cannonball Run.”

My Own United States J. W. Myers on Columbia cylinder 32055, issued in 1903
My Own United States is sung by J. W. Myers on Columbia Phonograph Company cylinder 32055, issued in 1903.
The song was featured in the show titled When Johnny Comes Marching Home. Lyrics are by Stanislaus Stange. Music is by Julian Edwards.
John W. Myers, usually identified on records as J. W. Myers, was arguably the leading baritone balladeer in the first decade of commercial recordings, working regularly from the early 1890s to 1904 or so, after which a drop in his output is dramatic.
Born in Wales, Myers immigrated to America at age 12 and worked at various jobs, eventually becoming a theatrical manager in New York.
The May 10, 1901, catalog of Zon-o-phone discs issued by the National Gramophone Corporation lists seven titles sung by Myers.
He cut over 100 titles in the early days of the Victor Talking Machine Company, beginning on February 20, 1901, with performances issued on seven-inch discs. Sessions in October 1902 would be his last for Victor for a few years.
For Edison he cut a couple dozen titles, most of them in 1901, beginning with Light of the Sea (7820). He was a versatile artist, covering sentimental standards (We'll Be Sweethearts to the End, 9498), bass-baritone classics (Rocked in the Cradle of the Deep, 7840), and comic numbers.
After The Bridge (8010) was released in 1902, he stopped making Edison records for a few years, finally returning with Night Time (9470), issued in February 1907.
Announcing its release, the December 1906 issue of Edison Phonograph Monthly states, Mr. Myers was always a favorite among admirers of the Edison Phonograph and Edison Records, and his re-enlistment in the Edison corps of artists will be pleasing news to them.
By this time Myers recorded mainly sentimental numbers and songs of a previous generation. The February 1907 issue of Edison Phonograph Monthly, announcing the April release of Standard 9524, states, 'The Bowery Grenadiers,' by J.W. Myers, is a revival of an old song that will awaken more than ordinary interest. It will recall by-gone days, when the late John W. Kelly entertained thousands with it. Thirty or more years ago it was one of the most popular songs of the day.
His final Edison recording was Land League Band (9576), issued in June 1907. The April 1907 issue of Edison Phonograph Monthly calls this a lively old march song popular a generation ago. Myers was issued only on two-minute wax cylinders, his career with Edison being over by the time four-minute wax Amberols were introduced in 1908.
He was popular abroad. The February 15, 1906, issue of the Talking Machine News, published in London, noted, The newsboys of London and New York whistle the same tunes, whether they are 'Navajo,' 'My Irish Molly O,' 'Bedelia' or 'In the Shade of the Old Apple Tree,' because the talker has made them known on both sides of the ocean....If George Alexander or Henry Burr or J.W. Myers were to advertise a concert in the Albert Hall next month, nine-tenths of their audience would be talking machine users.
In late 1905 he cut titles for Leeds & Catlin, which issued Myer performances on over a dozen Imperial discs, beginning with Somebody's Sweetheart I Want to Be (44637) in January 1906 (Imperial discs sold for sixty cents). Edison and Victor issued Myers recordings until 1907. One of his last Columbia recordings was a new take, with orchestra accompaniment, of Where the Silv'ry Colorado Wends Its Way, issued in January 1909 on A610. This title had earlier been issued on single-sided disc 1092 as well as cylinder 32032, both with Myers accompanied by piano.
His singing style was losing its appeal, and recording activity again dropped off. Major H. H. Annand reports in a list of U-S Everlasting cylinders that Myers was among those who in 1908 started the U-S Phonograph Company of Cleveland, Ohio. If true, it is curious that Myers did not make U-S Everlasting cylinders.
He resurfaced as a Columbia, Rex, and Emerson artist. One late Columbia title is Along the Yukon Trail (A1614), issued in 1914.
Walsh concluded that the singer died around 1919.

Artist Talk: Sable Elyse Smith
On March 27, 2018, Aperture Foundation, in collaboration with the Photography Program at Parsons School of Design, of The New School, was pleased to present an artist talk with Sable Elyse Smith. Smith, known for her work across photography, video, poetry, and performance, calls attention to the personal consequences of mass incarceration in the United States, and how these confining structures in society invisibly shape our minds and direct our bodies. Her recent artist’s book Landscapes & Playgrounds (2017), featured in Aperture’s “Prison Nation” issue, is a meditation on the complex language and emotional landscapes embedded in a system of surveillance. Smith’s work has been presented most recently in Trigger: Gender as a Tool and a Weapon at the New Museum and in the solo exhibition Ordinary Violence at the Queens Museum in New York. She is a 2018 artist in residence at the Studio Museum in Harlem.
Sable Elyse Smith is an interdisciplinary artist, writer, and educator based in New York. Her practice considers memory and trauma while enacting an undoing of language. Her work has been featured at the Museum of Modern Art, MoMA PS1, the New Museum, the Studio Museum in Harlem, SIGNAL Gallery, Rachel Uffner Gallery, and Recess Assembly, New York; Yerba Buena Center for the Arts and Artists’ Television Access, San Francisco; and Birkbeck Cinema in collaboration with the Serpentine Galleries, London. Her writing has been published in Radical Teacher, Studio Magazine, and Affidavit, and she recently published her first book. Smith has received awards from Creative Capital, Fine Arts Work Center, the Queens Museum, Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, Rema Hort Mann Foundation, the Franklin Furnace Fund, and Art Matters. She is currently part-time faculty at Columbia University School of the Arts and visiting faculty at Virginia Commonwealth University in the Sculpture and Extended Media department.
Aperture magazine’s “Prison Nation” issue and the related exhibition and programs are funded, in part, with generous lead support from the Ford Foundation, as well as funding from the Reba Judith Sandler Foundation. Additional funding is provided by the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts and the Grace Jones Richardson Trust, and the Board of Trustees and Members of Aperture Foundation. Additional public funds are from the National Endowment for the Arts, New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew M. Cuomo and the New York State Legislature, and the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council.

The colleges where the American dream is still alive
These schools are much better than Harvard, Yale, or Princeton at making poor kids rich.
Subscribe to our channel!
Wealthy, prestigious universities such as Harvard Yale, Stanford and Columbia garner billions in donations with the message of financial aid. They show off case after case of talented students from humble backgrounds reaching the top 1% after attending elite schools. The story goes that these universities aren’t just world leaders in cutting-edge research, they’re engines of upward social mobility.
But the latest research by the Equality of Opportunity project suggests this is a myth. A study 10.8 million people on the effect colleges have at moving kids born into the bottom 20 percent of the income distribution up to the top 20 percent showed that though elite universities are very good at moving students up the income ladder, they let in very few low-income students. The problem isn’t one of financial aid, but outreach; thousands of high-achieving poor kids just aren’t applying to elite schools.
The true heroes are less selective schools that let in a large number of students from the bottom 20%. They include Cal State Los Angeles and PACE University. These schools take in the most low-income students who move to the top fifth of income in the US after graduation.

Driving Downtown - San Diego's Skyline 4K - USA
Driving Downtown Streets - Market Street - San Diego California USA - Episode 85.
Starting Point: Market Street
San Diego is a major city in California, United States. It is in San Diego County, on the coast of the Pacific Ocean in Southern California, approximately 120 miles (190 km) south of Los Angeles and immediately adjacent to the border with Mexico.
With an estimated population of 1,394,928 as of July 1, 2015, San Diego is the eighth-largest city in the United States and second-largest in California. It is part of the San Diego–Tijuana conurbation, the second-largest transborder agglomeration between the US and a bordering country after Detroit–Windsor, with a population of 4,922,723 people. San Diego has been called the birthplace of California. It is known for its mild year-round climate, natural deep-water harbor, extensive beaches, long association with the United States Navy, and recent emergence as a healthcare and biotechnology development center.
The city is the seat of San Diego County and is the economic center of the region as well as the San Diego–Tijuana metropolitan area. San Diego's main economic engines are military and defense-related activities, tourism, international trade, and manufacturing. The presence of the University of California, San Diego (UCSD), with the affiliated UCSD Medical Center, has helped make the area a center of research in biotechnology.
Economy
The largest sectors of San Diego's economy are defense/military, tourism, international trade, and research/manufacturing, respectively. In 2014, San Diego was designated by a Forbes columnist as the best city in the country to launch a small business or startup company.

Also, the local craft brewing industry attracts an increasing number of visitors for beer tours and the annual San Diego Beer Week in November; San Diego has been called America's Craft Beer Capital.
