Multnomah Falls is a waterfall located in the Columbia River Gorge, east of Troutdale, between Corbett and Dodson, Oregon, United States. The waterfall is accessible from the Historic Columbia River Highway and Interstate 84. Spanning two tiers on basalt cliffs, it is the tallest waterfall in the state of Oregon at 620 ft (189 m) in height.
The land surrounding the falls was developed by Simon Benson in the early-twentieth century, with a pathway, viewing bridge, and adjacent lodge being constructed in 1925. The Multnomah Falls Lodge and the surrounding footpaths at the falls were added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1981. Contemporarily, the state of Oregon maintains a switchback trail that ascends to a talus slope 100 feet (30 m) above the falls, and descends to an observation deck that overlooks the falls' edge. The falls attract over two million visitors each year, making it the most-visited natural recreation site in the U.S. Pacific Northwest.
The falls drops in two major steps, split into an upper falls of 542 feet (165 m) and a lower falls of 69 feet (21 m), with a gradual 9 foot (3 m) drop in elevation between the two, so the total height of the waterfall is conventionally given as 620 feet (189 m). The two drops are due to a zone of more easily eroded basalt at the base of the upper falls.

Multnomah Falls is a waterfall located on Multnomah Creek in the Columbia River Gorge, east of Troutdale, between Corbett and Dodson, Oregon, United States. It is listed as the tallest waterfall in the state and the 434th tallest in the world. It is usually cited as dropping 611 feet, 542 feet in the upper and 69 feet in the lower tier. Multnomah Falls is the second highest year-round waterfall in the United States.

Driving the Columbia River Gorge on I-84 is very scenic. This drive is heading west from The Dalles, Oregon to Troutdale, Oregon. This route is 69.8 miles (112.3 km) and goes from dry grass covered mountains to wet tree covered mountains. The road follows the Columbia River the entire way. This allows you to see many of the Hydro Electric Plants that are on the Columbia River.

I made this trip in August, 2015. Video shot with a Brinno TLC-200 Pro time-lapse camera, mounted on my roof with a homemade magnetic case. I travel with two Brinno cameras - one facing forward, the other in reverse. Sometimes the reverse camera captures better video (fewer raindrops and bugs hit the rear-view lens).

Description: The Historic Columbia River Highway is an approximately 75-mile-long scenic highway in the U.S. state of Oregon between Troutdale and The Dalles, built through the Columbia River Gorge between 1913 and 1922. As the first planned scenic roadway in the United States, it has been recognized in numerous ways, including a listing on the National Register of Historic Places as a National Historic Landmark, designation as a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark by the American Society of Civil Engineers, and considered a destination unto itself as an All-American Road by the U.S. Secretary of Transportation. The historic roadway was bypassed by the present Columbia River Highway No. 2 from the 1930s to the 1950s, leaving behind the old two-lane road. The road is now mostly owned and maintained by the state through the Oregon Department of Transportation as the Historic Columbia River Highway No. 100 or the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department as the Historic Columbia River Highway State Trail. The original highway was promoted by lawyer and entrepreneur Sam Hill and engineer Samuel C. Lancaster, to be modeled after the great scenic roads of Europe. From the very beginning, the roadway was envisioned not just as means of traveling by the then popular Model T, but designed with an elegance that took full advantage of all the natural beauty along the route. When the United States highway system was officially established in 1926, the highway became the part of U.S. Route 30. Since then, modern Interstate 84 has been built parallel to the highway between Portland and The Dalles, replacing it as the main travel route and resulting in the loss of some of the original sections of road.

Bicycling on Columbia Historic Highway in Oregon
Last summer, I biked 4000 miles across the U.S. from Seaside, NJ to Seaside, OR. The Columbia River Valley was probably the prettiest of the whole trip. Here's a section I cycled through on Historic Highway 30.

A stream of glacial origin, the Sandy River begins in the Mount Hood National Forest, just west of Mount Hood, snaking its way some 40 miles to where it flows into the Columbia River near Troutdale. A long-time top producer, the Sandy offers spring and fall Chinook salmon, coho salmon, as well as both winter and summer steelhead
The original Bridge of the Gods was created during the eighteenth century by the Bonneville Slide, a major landslide which dammed the Columbia River, near present-day Cascade Locks, Oregon in the Pacific Northwest of the United States. The river eventually removed it, but this event is remembered in local legends of the Native Americans as the Bridge of the Gods.
It is now the name of a bridge, the Bridge of the Gods, across the Columbia River between Oregon and Washington.

From Bend to Portland, taking the mount Hood pass, unfortunately you couldn't see the mountain well on camera due to the clouds. Then some footage of multnomah falls and a hike in the area to get a good view of the Columbia River Gorge.

We are a family of 5 from Texas. We are ditched suburbia life and we are heading to live on a sailboat. Follow along as we learn what we are doing. This will be a great adventure.
Last week we drove over 3 days in our suburban with 2 adults, 3 kids, 2 cats and all our keepsake items to drop off at families homes in Oregon to hold for us.
This week we toured many areas of Portland. Multnomah Falls is one of the best known landmarks here in Oregon. Aside from popular belief it is not the 2nd tallest water fall in the US. It actually rank 154th, and 434th in the world. In 2017 there was a fire that threatened this area. We are grateful we got to see it one more time. We hiked up to the 2nd of 11 switch backs before the boys were pretty nervous about the edge. The water fall was beautiful.
We drove 13 miles east of the falls to visit the first of many dams on the Columbia river, Bonneville Dam. This is part of the Lewis and Clark expedition in 1805. They even created a salmon ladder to allow them to continue their journey upriver to spawn.
This week we also took the local MAX, train to downtown Portland. We toured the water front and pioneer courthouse square area.
