The Astoria Column - Must Do Historical Family Fun Activity in Astoria
The Astoria Column is a must do historical family fun activity for those visiting Astoria!
Built on Coxcombe Hill, the highest point in Astoria, the Column rises an additional 125 feet.
The Column was built in 1926. Its outside wall are decorated with a mural depicting significant historical events from the area, including the discovery of the Columbia River by Captain Robert Gray, and the arrival of the Lewis and Clark Expedition.
The drive up to the Column is wonderful by itself. Drive through the beautiful old neighborhoods of Astoria, then turn onto the wooded road leading up to the Column.
The Column stands at the center of a beautiful 30 acre park, complete with displays and informative signs about local Native Americans and the Lewis and Clark Expedition.
The Column has an internal, 164-stair spiral staircase to the viewing platform at the top of the tower. Be careful! The stairs are steep and the continual twisting can make you dizzy! Be considerate of others on the staircase.
On a clear day you might be able to see the City of Astoria, the Astoria-Megler Bridge, the confluence of the Columbia, Lewis and Clark, and Young's Rivers (the Columbia River is 4 miles wide at this point!), Mt Rainier, Mt St Helens and Mt Adams, Saddle Mountain and the Pacific Ocean.
You can buy small balsa wood airplanes from the gift shop in the park. Throw them from the top of the tower and watch them sail forever! Don't worry, the planes are biodegradable and won't trash up the park if they get lost.
From the park you can also start the Cathedral Tree Trail. The Cathedral Tree is an ancient Sitka Spruce, with open roots at the bottom that you can walk through! The trail is usually not crowded and is a great way to enjoy the beautiful forest right in town.
Admission to the park is $2

Drones over Washington State 2017 Part 2 Mount St Helens
During my recent trip to northern Oregon, a local resident told me I should go into Washington State and fly Mount St. Helens. I'll be eternally grateful to that lady. She was right!
The weather was spectacular, there were huge picturesque lakes just South of the volcano which made superb subjects.
It was so good the first day, I went back for another, went further up the mountain and flew the drone nearly a mile to get closer to the summit.
Seeing the volcano and its lakes today, it is hard to comprehend the explosion in 1980 which laid waste to miles of countryside, flattened all the tall trees and killed nearly 60 people.
All is quiet now, but everywhere I went, the snowy top of Mount St. Helens was constantly in view as a perpetual reminder...

Then went to the Johnston Ridge Observatory.
