20 Sep 2006 Hugo Chávez at the UN accuses the American Imperialism and the 'devil' Bush
Chávez attacks 'devil' Bush in UN speech
· Venezuelan accuses US of double standards on terror
· Bolivian president condemns war on drugs
Brandishing a copy of Noam Chomsky's Hegemony or Survival: America's Quest for Global Dominance, the president of Venezuela, Hugo Chávez, cemented his reputation as Washington's chief irritant yesterday with a fiery performance at the United Nations.
In a 15-minute address to the annual gathering of international leaders in New York, President Chávez said he could still smell sulphur left behind by the devil, George Bush, who had addressed the chamber 24 hours before.
His speech, which veered between a rousing appeal for a better world and a florid denunciation of the US, included the claim that President Bush thought he was in a western where people shot from the hip: This is imperialist, fascist, assassin, genocidal, the empire.
Mr Chávez complained that his personal doctor and head of security had been prevented from disembarking at New York airport by the American authorities. And then he coined the phrase that will now forever be etched into UN history as one of the more colourful criticisms levelled at the US president from his own turf: This is another abuse and another abuse of power on the part of the devil. It smells of sulphur here, but God is with us and I embrace you all.
He went on to accuse the US of double standards on terrorism. The US has already planned, financed and set in motion a coup in Venezuela, and it continues to support coup attempts in Venezuela and elsewhere ... I accuse the American government of protecting terrorists and of having a completely cynical discourse.
Coming just 12 hours after Washington's other nemesis, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad of Iran, had stood at the same spot and accused the US of hegemony and hypocrisy, Mr Chávez's colourful speech left US administration officials exasperated. John Bolton, the US ambassador to the UN, said afterwards that it was a comic strip approach to international affairs and insulting.
Mr Chávez could openly say what he wanted in Central Park, he added: Too bad President Chávez doesn't extend the same freedom of speech and the press to the people of Venezuela. That's my comment on his speech.
Delegates and leaders from around the world streamed back into the chamber to hear Mr Chávez, and when he stepped down the vigorous applause lasted so long that it had to be curtailed by the chair.
A fellow South American leader, Evo Morales of Bolivia, also livened up proceedings at the assembly. President Morales held up a coca leaf from the platform to make a point about his opposition to the US-driven war on drugs in his country.
The small, pale green leaf - illegal in the US - joins a growing list of artefacts displayed from the general assembly lectern that includes Nikita Khrushchev's shoe and Yasser Arafat's trademark gun and an olive branch.
Mr Morales, the first indigenous president of Bolivia, said: We don't need blackmail and threats and There's another historical injustice - criminalising coca, the coca leaf.
The Bush administration has accused the Bolivian government of failing to curb the country's growing cocaine industry.

History of the Black Panther Party: Huey Newton and the Price of Black Power in America (1994)
Huey Percy Newton (February 17, 1942 -- August 22, 1989) was an African-American political and urban activist who, along with Bobby Seale, co-founded the Black Panther Party in 1966. About the book:
Newton had a long series of confrontations with law enforcement, including several convictions, while he participated in political activism. He continued to pursue an education, eventually earning a Ph.D. in Social Science. Newton spent time in prison for manslaughter and was involved in a shooting that killed a police officer. In 1989 he was shot and killed in Oakland, California by a member of the Black Guerilla Family.
There are many references to Huey Newton in popular music, including in the songs Changes by Tupac Shakur,[44] Welcome to the Terrordome by Public Enemy, Queens Get the Money by Nas, Sunny Kim by Andre Nickatina, Just A Celebrity by The Jacka, Same Thing by Flobots, Dreams, Gangbangin' 101, Murder and 911 Is A Joke (Cop Killa) by The Game, You Can't Murder Me by Papoose, Police State by Dead Prez, Propaganda by Dead Prez We Want Freedom by Dead Prez, Malcolm, Garvey, Huey by Dead Prez, SLR by Lupe Fiasco, Bill Gates Freestyle by Fabolous, Wake Up by Black the Ripper, The Martyr by Immortal Technique, Lick Shots by Immortal Technique, Huey Newton by Wiz Khalifa & Currensy, HiiiPoWeR by Kendrick Lamar, My Favorite Mutiny by The Coup, National Anthem by Sir Mix-a-Lot, Bobby Seale by Lil Tweezii, Dream Team by Spearhead, From Here To Utopia [Ramshackle Glory], Free Huey by The Boo Radleys, Free Lance by HD of Bearfaced, When Will They Shoot? by Ice Cube, Pacific Heights by Pep Love, No Time for Love (aka If They Come in the Morning) by Jack Warshaw, Million Man March by Lowkey, Huey Newton by St. Vincent, Married With Children episode Rites of Passage in which Marcy tells what was happening when she turned 18.
In the comic strip and cartoon show The Boondocks, the main character Huey Freeman, a ten-year-old African-American revolutionary, is named after Newton; another reference comes when Freeman starts an independent newspaper, dubbing it the Free Huey World Report.[45] In 1996, A Huey P. Newton Story was performed on stage by veteran actor Roger Guenveur Smith. The one-man play later was made into an award-winning 2001 film directed by Spike Lee.
The Black Panther Party or BPP (originally the Black Panther Party for Self-Defense) was a black revolutionary socialist organization active in the United States from 1966 until 1982. The Black Panther Party achieved national and international notoriety through its involvement in the Black Power movement and U.S. politics of the 1960s and 1970s.
Founded in Oakland, California by Huey Newton and Bobby Seale on October 15, 1966, the organization initially set forth a doctrine calling primarily for the protection of black neighborhoods from police brutality. The leaders of the organization espoused socialist and Marxist doctrines; however, the Party's early black nationalist reputation attracted a diverse membership. The Black Panther Party's objectives and philosophy expanded and evolved rapidly during the party's existence, making ideological consensus within the party difficult to achieve, and causing some prominent members to openly disagree with the views of the leaders.
The organization's official newspaper, The Black Panther, was first circulated in 1967. Also that year, the Black Panther Party marched on the California State Capitol in Sacramento in protest of a selective ban on weapons. By 1968, the party had expanded into many cities throughout the United States, among them, Baltimore, Boston, Chicago, Cleveland, Dallas, Denver, Detroit, Kansas City, Los Angeles, Newark, New Orleans, New York City, Omaha, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, San Diego, San Francisco, Seattle and Washington, D.C.. Peak membership was near 10,000 by 1969, and their newspaper, under the editorial leadership of Eldridge Cleaver, had a circulation of 250,000. The group created a Ten-Point Program, a document that called for Land, Bread, Housing, Education, Clothing, Justice and Peace, as well as exemption from conscription for black men, among other demands. With the Ten-Point program, What We Want, What We Believe, the Black Panther Party expressed its economic and political grievances.

Fran Lebowitz on Writing, Politics, Humor, Stand-Up Comedians, News, Letterman (1995)
Frances Ann Fran Lebowitz (born October 27, 1950) is an American author and public speaker. Lebowitz is known for her sardonic social commentary on American life as filtered through her New York City sensibilities. Some reviewers have called her a modern-day Dorothy Parker. Her books:
David Michael Letterman (born April 12, 1947) is an American former television talk show host, comedian, and producer.
He hosted a late night television talk show for 33 years, beginning with the February 1, 1982, debut of Late Night with David Letterman on NBC, and ending with the May 20, 2015, broadcast of the Late Show with David Letterman on CBS. In total, Letterman hosted 6,028 episodes of Late Night and Late Show, surpassing friend and mentor Johnny Carson as the longest-serving late night talk show host in American television history. In 1996, Letterman was ranked No. 45 on TV Guide's 50 Greatest TV Stars of All Time.
Letterman is also a television and film producer. His company, Worldwide Pants, produced his show and formerly produced The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson. Worldwide Pants has also produced several prime-time comedies, the most successful of which was Everybody Loves Raymond, currently in syndication.
Several late-night hosts have cited Letterman's influence, including Conan O'Brien (his successor on Late Night), Stephen Colbert (his successor on The Late Show), Jimmy Fallon, Jimmy Kimmel and Seth Meyers.
Richard Franklin Lennox Thomas Pryor (December 1, 1940 – December 10, 2005) was an American stand-up comedian, social critic, and actor. Pryor was known for uncompromising examinations of racism and topical contemporary issues, which employed colorful vulgarities and profanity, as well as racial epithets. He reached a broad audience with his trenchant observations and storytelling style. He is widely regarded as one of the most important and influential stand-up comedians of all time: Jerry Seinfeld called Pryor The Picasso of our profession[20] and Bob Newhart heralded Pryor as the seminal comedian of the last 50 years.[21] This legacy can be attributed, in part, to the unusual degree of intimacy Pryor brought to bear on his comedy. As Bill Cosby reportedly once said, Richard Pryor drew the line between comedy and tragedy as thin as one could possibly paint it.[22]
Pryor's body of work includes the concert movies and recordings: Richard Pryor: Live & Smokin' (1971), That Nigga Crazy (1974), ...Is It Something I Said? (1975), Bicentennial Nigger (1976), Richard Pryor: Live in Concert (1979), Richard Pryor: Live on the Sunset Strip (1982), and Richard Pryor: Here and Now (1983). As an actor, he starred mainly in comedies such as Silver Streak (1976), but occasionally in dramas, such as Paul Schrader's Blue Collar (1978), or action films, such as Superman III (1983). He collaborated on many projects with actor Gene Wilder. Another frequent collaborator was actor/comedian/writer Paul Mooney.
Pryor won an Emmy Award (1973) and five Grammy Awards (1974, 1975, 1976, 1981, and 1982). In 1974, he also won two American Academy of Humor awards and the Writers Guild of America Award. The first-ever Kennedy Center Mark Twain Prize for American Humor was presented to him in 1998. He was listed at Number 1 on Comedy Central's list of all-time greatest stand-up comedians.
Leonard Alfred Schneider (October 13, 1925 – August 3, 1966), better known by his stage name Lenny Bruce, was an American stand-up comedian, social critic, satirist, and screenwriter. He was renowned for his open, free-style and critical form of comedy which integrated satire, politics, religion, sex, and vulgarity. His 1964 conviction in an obscenity trial was followed by a posthumous pardon, the first in New York State history, by then-Governor George Pataki in 2003. He paved the way for future outspoken counterculture-era comedians, and his trial for obscenity is seen as a landmark for freedom of speech in the United States.

Today, Snoopy can be found on coffee mugs, greeting cards and blimps, and even has his own amusement park. But Charlie Brown’s lovable black and white spotted dog wasn’t always mainstream. In fact, when the comic strip first appeared in the 1950s, the dog and his Peanut friends were considered, to quote Time Magazine’s David Michaels, “the fault-line of a cultural earthquake” due to the way the comic depicted life, real characters, and sadness.

Snow College Entrepreneurship Seminar: Art-repreneur Panel 10-23-2019
We are excited to bring a panel of local artists to our Entrepreneurship Seminars this year. Come and support these artists as they talk with students about their careers as artists.
John Clark – Manti, UT
John Henry Clark graduated from Utah State University with a BFA in 1994. He is an artist and author with an interest in tourism and automobile history. He and his wife Melissa are the authors of “Opening Zion,” a book on Zion National Park’s first official tourists. He has also written a series on automobile history in Utah called Motor Tales. John is an award winning printmaking artist whose work has been displayed in numerous juried art shows. Exhibitions include the 89th Annual Utah Spring Salon in 2013 where he received an award of merit, and the Pictured: Close to Home, Our Own Spectacular National Parks show at the St. George Art Museum in 2016. His passion for tourism history led to the creation of a series of vintage-style, screen printed posters that highlight the golden age of motor travel in western national parks. John also designed Utah’s newest ski-themed license plate.
Steve Weller – Ephraim, UT
Steve Weller is a middle school English teacher and college Instructor with a love for laughter. When he’s not teaching classes and wrestling with his kids he finds time for the occasional mural or caricature sketch. He has been drawing completely relatable (sometimes painfully so) middle school comic strips on his classroom board since he first started teaching 11 years ago. With four self-published books, regular published space in newspapers, multiple features on national education websites and nearly 20,000 followers on Facebook and Instagram, maybe it’s time to really get serious with this whole art thing.
Douglas Fryer – Spring City, UT
Douglas Fryer was born in Salt Lake City , Utah, and was raised in Illinois and California. In 1988 he received a BFA in Illustration from Brigham Young University in Provo Utah, and later returned to BYU for further study toward an MFA in Painting and Drawing, completing the degree in 1995. Douglas has taught Fine Art and Illustration at several universities and art schools, including BYU, The University of Hartford in Hartford Connecticut, and at The Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City. Fryer has also been invited to lecture and teach workshops in many locations in the United States and Europe. He has received numerous commissions to complete large murals for public and private locations. Douglas is currently represented by Meyer Gallery, Santa Fe, New Mexico and by Illume Gallery, St. George, Utah. His paintings are in numerous public and private collections in North America and Europe. His personal works are images of places, objects and people that have simple, yet profound significance to him.
Joe Bennion – Spring City, UT
I enjoy making pottery by hand on a foot powered treadle wheel. The physical involvement places me deeper in the process. The gentle sound of the wheel and the soft resistance of the clay in my hand are at once comforting and pleasant. Pleasure is an important element of our life in this world. It gives meaning and balance to the confusion, pain and sorrow we encounter here. I hope that as people take my pottery in hand and raise it to their lips they will recognize some the experience I have had in making it and will find pleasure of their own in use.
I am fascinated with the idea that we are the children of a benevolent creator. The influences that most powerfully shape who we are seem to be located in the household and family. I want my pottery to be there and to promote and influence that growth, however small it's part may be. The family dinner table is sacred space and the venue of first choice for my pottery.
I prefer domestic pottery that is plain, quiet and understated. I try to make pots that will play in the background, that speak gently but carry a great deal of information to those willing to wait and listen. I love the kinds of surfaces derived from wood firing and salt glazing processes. In the case of the wood fired kiln I also enjoy the deeper involvement with process that the stoking of the kiln affords me. I love to sit with a kiln late at night and listen to the wood popping and the quiet sounds of the draft.
Because of my decision to make quiet pottery I have had to leave the more public sales venues of street fairs, shops and galleries and sell my pottery at home where it is made. Somehow that environment shows my work to best advantage. I live and work in small Mormon farming village in the mountains of central Utah. Over the past ten years I have shifted my marketing to bring people to my door rather than sending the work out. This seems to work best and it feels right to me.

Liniers in Conversation with Steve Brodner
Superstar Argentine cartoonist Liniers, whose MACANUDO strip appears daily in La Nacíon, in conversation with political cartoonist Steve Brodner. In the aftermath of Charlie Hebdo, with the politics of cartooning discussed more than ever, Liniers and Brodner will take up the topic of the cartoonist's job, whether his/her work is overtly political like Brodner's, or intentionally non-political like Liniers' daily strip. For as we all know, even even work that is not explicitly political is underpinned by an ethos and a strong point of view onto life––both inward and in the social-public space.
An evening of fun, outspokenness and big personalities, which will allow all of us to dig into some deep thinking about strips, cartooning, and the lives of those living it.
