Two confederate statues removed from Tennessee parks - Daily Mail
The Memphis City Council sold two parks to a private entity on Wednesday. Two statues in the park portraying Confederate leaders Jefferson Davis (right) and Nathan Bedford Forrest (left) were then removed from the parks. The city sold the parks to get around the Tennessee Historical Commission, which had previously denied their request to take down the statues. Several U.S. cities have in recent months dismantled monuments to Confederate leaders, which have become focal points for a fraught national debate over race.

Confederate Monuments in Memphis
On Dec. 20, 2017, the City of Memphis voted on a process to allow two Confederate monuments in public parks to come down. A grassroots movement spurred by #TakeEmDown901 marched, attended public meetings at the city and state level, keeping the issue on the frontburner in a city preparing to mark the 50th anniversary of the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
This movement is part of a through-line of years-long efforts to remove monuments honoring Confederate Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest, the first grand wizard of the Ku Klux Klan, and Confederate President Jefferson Davis. Critics have said having them standing in a place of honor seemed to suggest a kind of Confederate sovereignty over a majority-black city struggling with unequal economic outcomes than white residents. Plus, the statues were installed long after the Civil War, suggesting they're not war memorials at all but something else altogether.

If Confederate Statues Are Removed Is Constitution Next
The News Guru: ATLANTA — As America seeks answers to a senseless massacre of nine black churchgoers in Charleston, S.C., last week by an avowed white supremacist, Confederate symbols, statuary, and legends are under siege from Memphis, Tenn., to Atlanta.
But it’s the United States Capitol that has emerged as a crucible for the larger debate, as lawmakers rethink the meaning and value of displaying statues of these Southern icons.
Georgia designated Alexander Hamilton Stephens, the vice president of the Confederacy, as one of the two persons notable in its history to represent the state in the halls of Congress, for example. Virginia picked Gen. Robert E. Lee, the iconic military hero of the Confederacy.

Memphis KKK rally
The Ku Klux Klan was established in 1865 in Pulaski, Tennessee. Founded by six confederate soldiers, the KKK was seen as a hope for southern white Americans after the loss to the Civil War. The Klan was instated to target newly freed African Americans and their allies. Fast-forward over 100 years and the KKK still exists in the United States. The election of America's first black president sparked recruitment from Georgia to Virginia. On March 30, 2013 about 75 members of the Klan went to Memphis, TN to protest the renaming of three city parks renamed after Confederate troops.

A Community Called Orange Mound - Feb. 4, 2013
A Community Called Orange Mound, premiering Monday, February 4 at 9:00 p.m. on WKNO/Channel 10, is the story of a southeast Memphis neighborhood with a surprising legacy. The broadcast of the 60-minute documentary is sponsored by The New Olivet Baptist Church; Fred L. Davis Insurance Agency; and Tim Thompson, author of The Locker Room.
Established on the grounds of the former Deaderick plantation, Orange Mound was one of the first communities in the United States to be built entirely by and for African Americans. The self-contained community that emerged attracted not only laborers and domestic workers, but also doctors, lawyers, businessmen, and teachers, all of whom were proud to call Orange Mound home.
One of the closest-knit groups in Memphis, the residents of Orange Mound are still intensely loyal to the neighborhood that has been home to many families for generations, said producer Jay Killingsworth. And they all say the same thing: even though they can live elsewhere and have had opportunities to do so, Orange Mound is home and that is where they intend to stay.

Nathan Bedford Forrest Mutilated and Kill Black Soldiers
During the Civil war on April 12, 1864 we note the Fort Pillow Massacre. Fort Pillow is 40 miles from Memphis in Henning, Tennessee where Roots writer Alex Haley comes from. We note in 1863 President Abraham Lincoln encouraged former slaves to join the Union Army. Many of the first authorized soldiers came from Tennessee.
At Fort Pillow many African/Americans ran Fort Pillow. Nathan Bedford Forrest upon hearing about Black soldiers in anger gathers many Confederate Garrisons and went out to not only take the Fort he wanted to punish Black Soldiers and send a message.
The Black Soldiers surrendered instead of taking war prisoner Nathan Bedford Forrest killed everyone including women and children they even mutilated the bodies of the Black Union soldiers.
In the battle the soldiers surrendered. Fo
