Puerto Rican World War I Veterans:Connection To Connecticut World War One Centenary
During the Spanish-American War, the United States invaded Puerto Rico on July 25, 1898. Puerto Rican natives began to enlist in the United States Army since 1899. President Woodrow Wilson signed Jones-Shaforth Act on March 2, 1917. Under this act, Puerto Ricans were granted statutory citizenship. Two months later President Wilson signed Compulsory Military Service, and 20,000 Puerto Ricans were drafted to service in World War I.
I worked with Connecticut State Library on “Remembering World War One” project. This project is a commemoration of the World War One Centenary. It is a unique opportunity to connect Connecticut local history around the war.
I researched for Puerto Rican soldiers of World War I with a connection to Connecticut. The following are seven soldiers who lived in Connecticut of Puerto Rican descent who fought in the war.
Private First Class Cristobal R. Hidalgo was born in Coamo, Puerto Rico. He Hidalgo did not wait to be drafted he enlists in the Army on August 24, 1917. He was 27 years old. The picture on the left was on the day Hidalgo enlisted for WWI. The picture on the right Hidalgo first day in the Army in 1917. He was a residence in Bridgeport, CT.
Private First Class Hidalgo was killed in action in France on July 15, 1919. He served in the trench front line and was killed by a high explosive shell. Hidalgo was the first Puerto Rican veteran to die in World War I. After an investigation, Hidalgo remains were found in France and transferred to Arlington National Cemetery.
Hidalgo’s childhood friend Attorney Luis Samalea Iglesia, in 1923 requested a monument to be erected as a memorial to be built in Puerto Rico. Iglesia wanted to honor “the first man of the island to lay down his life voluntarily in the struggle for World freedom.” (see letter below dated August 4, 1923)
Private First Class Hidalgo fiancé Marian Doyle kept and shared his records with Connecticut library. Ms. Doyle stated Hidalgo was intensively patriotic and wrote poems expressing his willingness to die for the cause of liberty.
“I enlisted to fight,” he said simply: the welfare of a future generation, the protection of the women who are the flower of country demand it.”
Private Joseph Lopez was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico on January 20, 1887. His residence was Bridgeport, Connecticut. Lopez drafted on August 26, 1918 and honorably discharged on July 25, 1919. He re-enlisted on July 26, 1919 and honorably discharged July 26, 1920. He served in the Army in Infantry and Med Corps.
Private Efrain Caamano was born in Arecibo, Puerto Rico on July 1, 1889. His residence was Bridgeport, CT. Caamano in entering the United States had to sign a form for a resident of an insular possession of the United States on October 25, 1916. He was honorably discharged on December 9, 1918.
Private Enrique Blanco was born in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico; he was 23 years old. Blanco residence was New London, CT. Blanco was honorably discharged on August 14, 1919.
Private Gabriel Reyna was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico; he was 32 years old. Reyna residence was in Waterbury, CT. He was honorably discharge on April 23, 1918. Reyna was 25% disable.
Private Antonio Garcia was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico. His residence was in Waterbury, CT. Garcia was honorably discharge on December 20, 1918.
Private First Class Miguel R. Garcia was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico; he was 29 years old. Garcia residence was in Hartford, CT. He spoke six languages: Spanish, English, German, French, Italian, and Portuguese. Garcia was honorably discharge May 24, 1919.
Mystic Seaport, Connecticut, USA - TravelMedia.ie
Mystic Seaport, Connecticut, USA.
From the Mystic Seaport website.
Mystic Seaport is the nation’s leading maritime museum. Founded in 1929 to gather and preserve the rapidly disappearing artifacts of America’s seafaring past, the Museum has grown to become a national center for research and education with the mission to “inspire an enduring connection to the American maritime experience.”
The Museum’s grounds cover 19 acres on the Mystic River in Mystic, CT and include a recreated 19th-century coastal village, a working shipyard, formal exhibit halls, and state-of-the-art artifact storage facilities. The Museum is home to more than 500 historic watercraft, including four National Historic Landmark vessels, most notably the 1841 whaleship Charles W. Morgan, America’s oldest commercial ship still in existence.
The Museum hosts 250,000 visitors annually and has an active membership base of 16,000 from all over the Unites States and the world.
A stroll through the historic village transports visitors back to the mid-1800s where they can experience firsthand from staff historians, storytellers, musicians, and craftspeople just what life was like to earn ones living from the sea. In the Henry B. duPont Preservation Shipyard, they can watch shipwrights keeping the skills and techniques of traditional shipbuilding alive as they restore and maintain the Museum’s watercraft collection.
The Museum’s 41,000 square-foot Collections Research Center (CRC) offers exceptional physical and electronic access to the more than 2 million artifacts. The collections range from marine paintings, scrimshaw, models, tools, ships plans, an oral history archive, extensive film and video recordings, and more than 1 million photographs—including the incomparable Rosenfeld Collection. The CRC is also home to the G.W. Blunt White Library, a 75,000-volume research library where scholars from around the world come to study America’s maritime history.

Rare Ritchie Blackmore
From 4/18/91, Hartford, CT (4 days before the last U.S. show on the Deep Purple Slaves & Masters tour that I saw, 4/22/91, Syria Mosque, Pittsburgh, PA). Blackmore performing Blues and Difficult To Cure. Awesome! :)
About me:
Vincent Palamara was born in Pittsburgh and graduated from Duquesne University with a degree in Sociology.
Although not even born when President John F. Kennedy was assassinated, Vince brings fresh eyes to an old case. In fact, Vince would go on to study the largely overlooked actions - and inactions - of the United States Secret Service in unprecedented detail, as well as achieving a world's record in the process, having interviewed and corresponded with over seventy former agents (the House Select Committee on Assassinations had the old record of 46 with a 6 million dollar budget and supboena power from Congress), not to mention many surviving family members, White House aides, and even quite a few Parkland and Bethesda medical witnesses for a corresponding project. The result was Survivor's Guilt; The Secret Service & The Failure To Protect The President, a very successful self-published book that sold thousands of copies in the 1990's before becoming a free online e-book in 2006.
In addition, the aforementioned corresponding project on the John F. Kennedy assassination medical evidence, JFK: The Medical Evidence Reference, Vince's second book, although almost an afterthought to Vince's main area of research, still sold hundreds of copies and was favorably mentioned in books by William Law, R. Andrew Kiel, James Fetzer, and even Vince Bugliosi. Like his first book, Vince's medical evidence tome became a free online e-book in 2006.
All told, Vince has been favorably mentioned in over 50 JFK and Secret Service related books to date (including two whole chapters in Murder in Dealey Plaza, The Secret Service: The Hidden History Of An Enigmatic Agency by Philip Melanson, and the Final Report of the Assassination Records Review Board, among many others), often at length, in the bibliographies, and in the Secret Service - and even medical evidence - areas of these works.
Vince has appeared on the History Channel, local cable access television, YouTube, radio, newspapers, print journals, at national conferences, and all over the internet. Also, Vince's original research materials, or copies of said materials, are stored in the National Archives (by request under Deed Of Gift by the ARRB), the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library, Harvard University, the Assassination Archives and Research Center, and the Dallas Public Library.
Vince Palamara has become known (as he was dubbed by the History Channel in 2003) the Secret Service expert. As former JFK Secret Service agent Joe Paolella proclaimed: You seem to know a lot about the Secret Service, maybe even more than I do, while fellow JFK Secret Service agent Chuck Zboril stated: You might be helpful to the official Secret Service historian who works out of Washington!

When you think of the northeastern United States, “country music” is probably not the first thing that pops into your mind. But according to numerous metrics, country music is becoming increasingly popular outside of the midwest and southern U.S. We went to the tailgate of a popular country act called Florida Georgia Line to find out why people in Connecticut are turning to country music.
