Putin Visits Mongolia - Renews Friendship and Cooperation Partnership With Ulaanbaatar!
Subscribe to Vesti News
“You'll know a horse by riding it, and a man by his friendship.” This Mongolian proverb, according to Vladimir Putin, explains the strategic partnership between Moscow and Ulaanbaatar. The meeting of the presidents of the two countries in a traditional yurt resulted in the signing of an indefinite treaty of friendship. The delegations signed a dozen agreements. Some Mongolian politicians easily switched to Russian. Putin's visit to Mongolia is timed to coincide with the 80th anniversary of the common victory of our peoples in the battles of Khalkhin Gol. The crushing defeat of Japan in 1939 saved the Soviet Union from a war on two fronts.

CouchSurfing Across Mongolia
My buddy and I flew from Hawaii to Moscow, hopped the Trans-Siberian railway to Irkutsk, Russia, realized out visas would expire before reaching Vladivostok, so escaped to Mongolia in February, 2011 (brrrrrrrrrr!). We then continued through China to Thailand and back to Hawaii. This is the segment of our trip while waiting for our visas to come back from the Chinese Embassy in Ulan Bator, Mongolia.

SOUTH KOREA: SEOUL: RUSSIA SIGNS TRADE AND INVESTMENT DEALS
Natural Sound
Russia and South Korea have overcome a legacy of Cold War bitterness, signing a package of agreements to strengthen bilateral trade and investment ties.
The agreement underlines Seoul's desire to tap a potentially large new market and Moscow's interest in attracting South Korean capital to revive its ailing economy.
Russian Prime Minister Chernomyrdin, met Thursday with President Kim Young-sam for talks concentrating on trade and the economy.
A longtime ally of communist North Korea, Russia has rapidly improved relations with the North's arch enemy, pro-Western South Korea, since the former Soviet Union established diplomatic relations with Seoul in 1990.
Chernomyrdin held a separate meeting with his South Korean opposite Lee Hong-koo and the two prime ministers signed an agreement to strengthen trade and investment ties.
South Korea hopes to tap the potential Russian market, and Moscow wants South Korean investment to help revive its sputtering economy.
The agreement calls on the two sides to strengthen cooperation for a number of big projects now under way, including gas exploitation in Irkutsk near the Russia-Mongolia border and construction of a gas pipeline to South Korea.
Chernomyrdin appealed for more vigorous South Korean investment, saying the two countries have the potential to prosper together economically.
South Korea also plans to build a trade centre complex in Moscow and an industrial complex in the Russian Far Eastern port of Nahodka to house light-industry enterprises in the resource-rich region.
Chernomyrdin, who arrived Wednesday for a three-day meeting, said Moscow will soon give formal approval to a South Korean plan to export 10-thousand to 15-thousand taxis to Moscow.
He also proposed that South Korea renovate more than 70 factories Russia built in North Korea in the 1960s and 1970s. Chernomyrdin said most of those factories are idle because of North Korea's lack of fuel and parts.
The two sides also agreed to open negotiations on how Russia will repay 400 (m) million (US) dollars owed to Seoul in loans. The money should have been repaid by last year.
In a complex loan repayment deal, Russia is providing raw materials and high-tech military goods to pay another 457 (m) million dollars which was due two years ago.
The now-defunct Soviet Union had been a main supporter and arms provider for North Korea, a longtime enemy of Seoul.

The trans railway is a railway network connecting Ulan Ude in Russia with the Chinese city of Jining through the city of Ulan Bator in Mongolia.
The line was built between 1949 and 1961. In most of Mongolia is single track and in China is two-way. The track width is 1520 mm in Russia and Mongolia and 1435 in China. In addition there are branches in the cities of Erdenet and Baganuur.
The construction of railways in Mongolia occurred much later than in the rest of the world. Therefore the construction of the new line Trans Mongolian, reaching Ulan-Baator in 1950 from the north and the border with China in 1955 the only railway in Mongolia was a line of 43 km opened in 1938 started in 1947 Before that connecting coal mines in Nalaikh with capital and a line 236 kilometers (147 miles) of goods built by the Soviets and ended in 1939.
The Mongolian railway company Mongolyn Tomor Zam carries 80% of all goods and 30% of all passengers within the country. The Trans-Siberian Railway is a railway network connecting Russia with the European provinces of the Russian Far East, Mongolia, China and connects with North Korea.
Another strand of importance within this extensive railway network is the Trans- whose route coincides with the Trans-Siberian to Tarskaya, about 1,000 km east of Lake Baikal. From the city of Tarskaya, tuck the Trans-southeast toward China, and follows its route to finish in Beijing.
The third primary route is the Trans, in its plan coincides with the Trans-Siberian until Ulan Ude on the east shore of Lake Baikal. From Ulan-Ude, the Trans heads towards to Ulan Bator, after which continues southeast to Beijing.
In 1991 it was completed a fourth path, whose route lies further north, after more than five decades of sporadic work. Known as the Baikal-Amur Mainline, this extension is separated from the Siberian several hundred kilometers west of Lake Baikal, and crosses its northern end. This route reaches the Pacific Ocean northeast of Khabarovsk, at Sovetskaya Gavan. While it provides access to the remarkable north coast of Baikal, this branch is also characterized by cross areas.
The desire for Russia to have a port on the Pacific Ocean was made with the founding of Vladivostok in 1860. By 1880 Vladivostok had become a major port city, and the lack of communications between European Russia and its Far Eastern provinces was a problem that was felt. Construction of the railway began in 1891 on the initiative of Count Sergei Witte.
As in the case of the First Transcontinental Railroad in North America, the construction of the Trans began at both ends, while extensions of the railway were made to the center. In the extreme case that began in Vladivostok, the tracks were laid in a northerly direction along the banks of the Ussuri River to Khabarovsk. Thus it was formed the Ussuri line.
In 1890 a bridge was built over the Ural, allowing the railway line entry into Asia. The bridge across the Ob River was completed in 1898 and the small town of Novonikolaevsk, which was founded in 1883, became an important center of Siberia that would be called Novosibirsk. The Trans-Siberian remains the most important means of communication in Russia, to the point that about 30% of the country's exports are transported by it. While the attraction leads many visitors traveling in it, it is still widely used by the Russians in their domestic travel.
The Trans-Siberian Railway had a direct positive impact on the economy of the area, they opened up: foreign investment in mining, commerce, railways and factories, coupled with the establishment of consulates and foreign trade office in Vladivostok. The two-lane expansion of the Trans-Siberian Railway was completed after the Second World War.
About the Trans-Siberian Railway runs the longest continuous train of the world (Moscow Wladiwostok- Pyongyang). Every other day, a train leaves 1/2 (Rossiya) the Yaroslavsky railway station in Moscow and in the opposite direction of Vladivostok. Almost every town along the Trans-Siberian Railway or in the vicinity of the route has its own pair of trains to Moscow: Moscow-Omsk, -Nowosibirsk, -Nowokusnezk, -Kemerowo, -Tomsk, -Krasnojarsk, -Abakan, -Irkutsk, -Ulan-Ude, - Severobaikalsk, -Tschita or -Chabarowsk.

The rail transport in Russia has been one of the great economic achievements of the country. Russia is a country larger than the United States or China, so its density rail is lower than that of these two countries, especially in the case of the United States. Since the density of population of Russia is also much lower than that of these two countries. Russian Railways carry their cargo and passengers on very long distances, often through vast and inhospitable areas.
The Trans-Siberian Railway, short Transsib, is the longest railway in the world and the main line of Russia. The transcontinental railway is 9289 kilometers long and stretches from Moscow through Siberia to Vladivostok. The Russian name is Transsibirskaja magistral or Trans-Siberian main route. The night trains to Beijing via the Trans-Mongolian Railway and the Trans-Mongolia railroad make up a part of their route using the Transsib.
The Transsib is especially important for freight trains. A large proportion of freight transport in Russia will take place on the Transsib. For Siberia is the line a real lifeline; many places were only developed after construction of the railway. There were opposing predictions about the fate of the railway: the most pessimistic predicted large losses due to operating costs, other optimists predicted a great success and the ability to carry cargo between the ' Europe and Japan more quickly and more economically than the sea.
In fact the cost of construction of the Trans-Siberian returned completely in a few years. But the line could not compete in the transport market for goods in transit. The railway was single track and unexpectedly also much used by local freight trains, which reduced the average speed is 15 km / h.
The third primary route is the Trans, in its plan coincides with the Trans-Siberian until Ulan Ude on the east shore of Lake Baikal. From Ulan-Ude, the Trans heads towards to Ulan Bator, after which continues southeast to Beijing. The Trans-Siberian remains the most important means of communication in Russia, to the point that about 30% of the country's exports are transported by it. While the attraction leads many visitors traveling in it, it is still widely used by the Russians in their domestic travel.
At the beginning of the Russo-Japanese War in February 1904, the capacity of the Trans-Siberian railway was limited to ten trains per day in each direction. However, until the war ended, the capacity could be more than doubled. After the end of the Russian-Japanese war of 1904-1905 there was a threat of loss of control over Manchuria and the Chinese Eastern Railway, and hence the eastern part of the Trans-Siberian. It was necessary to continue the construction so that the highway passes only through the territory of the Russian Empire.
The Trans-Siberian Railway had a direct positive impact on the economy of the area, they opened up: foreign investment in mining, commerce, railways and factories, coupled with the establishment of consulates and foreign trade office in Vladivostok.
The Trans-Siberian Railway crosses 16 major rivers In addition, it extends 207 km along the Lake Baikal and 39 km along the Amur Bay. During the day they connect sporadically express trains with seats towns along the Trans-Siberian Railway, for example, Omsk-Novosibirsk. The average travel speed of passenger trains on the Trans-Siberian Railway is 60 to 70 km / h. Freight trains go slower.
Since 2010, several freight trains between China and Europe now offered. Their cargo is on the system interface boundaries between standard gauge transhipped and broad gauge. Since end of November 2011 runs a daily train of Trans-Eurasia Logistics for BMW factory Leipzig to Shenyang.
The third is the main line of the Trans-Mongolian Railway, which coincides with the Trans-Siberian railway to the city of Ulan Ude, located on the east shore of Baikal. From this city the Trans-Mongolian Railway is heading to the capital of Mongolia. The main route Trans-Siberian Railway began in Moscow at Yaroslavsky Vokzal, passing through Yaroslavl, Chelyabinsk, Omsk, Novosibirsk, Irkutsk, Ulan-Ude, Chita and Khabarovsk to Vladivostok via southern Siberia.

SUMMARY
=======
Ulaanbaatar, formerly anglicised as Ulan Bator (Mongolian: Улаанбаатар, [ʊɮɑːm.bɑːtʰɑ̆r], Ulaγanbaγatur, literally Red Hero), is the capital and largest city of Mongolia. The city is not part of any aimag (province), and its population as of 2014 was over 1.3 million, almost half of the country's total population. Located in north central Mongolia, the municipality lies at an elevation of about 1,300 meters (4,300 ft) in a valley on the Tuul River. It is the country's cultural, industrial and financial heart, the centre of Mongolia's road network and connected by rail to both the Trans-Siberian Railway in Russia and the Chinese railway system. The city was founded in 1639 as a nomadic Buddhist monastic centre. It settled permanently at its present location, the junction of the Tuul and Selbe rivers, in 1778. Prior to that occasion it changed location twenty-eight times, each new location being chosen ceremonially. In the twentieth century, Ulaanbaatar grew into a major manufacturing center. Ulaanbaatar is a member of the Asian Network of Major Cities 21. The city's official website lists Moscow, Hohhot, Seoul, Sapporo and Denver as sister cities.
