Russia - Baby Giraffe At Moscow Zoo
Muscovites young and old welcomed the newest inhabitant of the
city zoo Tuesday (29/8) , a two-and-a-half year old baby giraffe.
Samson was delivered to his new home at the Moscow Zoo in a yellow
crate which barely contained his three-metre high frame. A gift
from the zoo in St Petersburg, Samson is already the third
generation in captivity from his breeding line and as a result,
has already adjusted to the harsh Russian weather. Natalya Istratova, spokeswoman for the zoo, described Samson's arrival as a big event and said the zoo had provided him with special living arrangements.

Baby tiger and lion cubs become the best of friends at Russian zoo
A four-month old tiger cub and three-and-a-half month old lion cub have become inseparable at Sochi's Oktiabrski spa in Russia. Smurfik, and its younger pal Eva, love nothing more than eating, sleeping, and playing together. Manager Olga Zaskavskaya said their behaviour is 'perfect'. 'They understand what is allowed and what isn't'. However, their friendship is not destined to last. In two months time the two will be separated and put into different, larger enclosures. Smurfik may then be sent to a zoo in Moscow or Ekaterinburg.

Russian Zookeepers Train Panda to Paint
Moscow Zoo is attempting to create an artist out of male panda Ru Yi, who picked up a brush and made an abstract painting in green and yellow.
The zoo’s two pandas, Ru Yi and Ding Ding, have started to take painting classes twice a week, with an exhibition of their artworks planned in the near future.
The pair were handed over to Moscow Zoo by Chinese President Xi Jinping at a ceremony with Russian President Vladimir Putin in April.
Beijing has loaned the pandas to Moscow for 15 years as part of a joint research project.

Russia: Albino African hedgehog triplets born in captivity
A 2-year-old albino African hedgehog named Marusya became a first-time mother on Tuesday, giving birth to triplets in a Moscow petting zoo. This event became a sensation and attracted the attention of mass media and ordinary animal lovers because African hedgehogs rarely breed in captivity, and all three babies turned out to be albinos.
The babies are now three days old and weigh just 30 grams. Workers at the zoo, where visitors can feed, touch animals and even hold them in hands, will watch to make sure the newborn hedgehogs are not killed by their mother, as hedgehogs sometimes do to their young.
The zoo has appealed to visitors via its Website and social networking for help in choosing names for the baby hedgehogs.
Mother Marusya was brought to Moscow from the city of Novosibirsk only two months ago. Her partner's name is Gosha, and is six months younger than Marusya and was brought from Kazan last spring.
The African hedgehog (Atelerix) is a genus of mammal in the Erinaceidae family. It contains four species: The Four-toed Hedgehog (Atelerix albiventris), North African Hedgehog (Atelerix algirus), Southern African Hedgehog (Atelerix frontalis) and Somali Hedgehog (Atelerix sclateri).
