History is my second love, after food. And in fact, sometimes I think it might be my first love!
When I moved to Madrid I fell in love with the city's history. While the Spanish capital may not be the oldest city in Europe, it was much older than New Zealand! And it was full of so many wonderful stories of intrigue, had been the home of so many fascinating people, and the centre of so many dramatic events in Spanish history.
So in this walking tour - which is based on the tour I designed when I designed Devour Tours' most popular Tapas, Taverns & History Tour - I take you through the history of Madrid, starting at the beginning and right up to the civil war.
Here are the places we stop:
1. Plaza de Oriente: Location of Madrid's royal palace and the spot where the city was founded!
2. Plaza de Ramales: Where Spain's most famous painter - Diego de Velazquez - may be buried!
3. Calle del Factor: Gorgeous views of the cathedral, the Royal Palace and the Casa del Campo (the old royal hunting grounds, now an enormous public park).
4. Calle de la Almudena: The admittedly not so impressive remains of an old church. But I love the statue of the Curios Neighbour, and also knowing that this was the former location of a mosque.
5. Calle de San Nicolás: Love this little hidden corner with Madrid's oldest standing church from the 12th century (and which potentially is the site of a former mosque
6. Plaza de la Villa: Once the most important square in the city!
7. Calle del Codo: Love this tiny little hidden street - also the location of the famous cookie nuns!
8. Plaza Puerta Cerrada: Right at the top of Calle Cava Baja (tapas heaven!), and where the famous motto of Madrid can be read on the walls - Over water my walls of fire are built.
9. Plaza Mayor: The city's main historic square - site of inquisition trials, bull fights, fires and the Christmas market.
10. Puerta del Sol: The people's square! Home of protests, uprisings and New Year's Eve celebrations!
11. Casa del Abuelo: Amazing garlic prawns, cooked right before your eyes!
12. Plaza Santa Ana: A gorgeous square surrounded by cafes and bars, and with my favourite statue in Madrid of Federico García Lorca.
13. Calle Lope de Vega: The final resting place (we think!) of Spain's most famous author - Miguel de Cervantes (author of Don Quixote)
Enjoy!

2. MORE INFO ABOUT THE VIDEO ????
⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯
What do you eat and drink in the Mercado de San Miguel (aka the San Miguel Market)? It’s such a common question. And I understand the confusion! This place has so many options, and can get really busy!
In this video I take you inside the San Miguel Market for a food tour of sorts. We eat and drink at 9 different stops - including vermouth, olives, cheese, bacalao, fried fish, pintxos, paella and gelato. And I give you my honest opinion on each stop.
I also answer the following questions
- Is the Mercado de San Miguel a market?
- Is the Mercado de San Miguel a tourist trap?
- What time is the best time to visit the Mercado de San Miguel?
The places I stopped at to eat were:
1. La Hora del Vermut for vermouth and banderillas and olives
2. Mya Quesos for cheese
3. La Casa del Bacalao for bacalao and smoked sardines
4. Mr Pinkleton for wine
5. El Señor Martín for fried seafood
6. Arzábal for patatas bravas
7. Amaiketako for pintxos
8. Paella Power for paella
9. Rocambolesc for gelato
And I also give you my opinion on the market as a whole. Is it worth visiting? I think if it’s your first time then yes. But go when it’s quieter, and know that sometimes the prices are expensive. But that it’s a fun place to get your tapas sea legs. So it really should be the beginning of your tapas adventure, not the end of it.
And other traditional markets that I recommend you check out are:
1. Mercado de Antón Martín (don’t confuse this with Mercado de San Antón which is in Chueca - I don’t love it… it’s sort of a market, but not really a place where the grannies shop).
2. Mercado de la Paz
3. Mercado San Fernando
4. Mercado de las Maravillas
Enjoy!

Places to see in ( Madrid - Spain ) Naval Museum
Places to see in ( Madrid - Spain ) Naval Museum
The Museo Naval de Madrid —in English, Naval Museum of Madrid— is a national museum in Madrid, Spain. It shows the history of the Spanish Navy since the Catholic Monarchs, in the 15th century, up to the present.
The displays set naval history in a wide context with information about Spanish rulers and the country's former colonies. The collections include navigation instruments, weapons, maps and paintings.
Its origins date back to 1792, but it was not until 1843 when the Museum was inaugurated in Madrid. The then Spanish Naval Ministry was provided with a new headquarters in the 1920s, and the museum moved there in 1932. (Until 1977 there were three ministerial portfolios, one for each of the different branches of the Armed Forces: the army, navy, and air force. During the Transición, Adolfo Suárez combined them into one). The architects were José Espelius and Francisco Javier de Luque.
Visitors enter the museum through a modernist facade on the Paseo del Prado, and pass to the first floor where former courtyards (now exhibition halls of the Naval Museum) are covered by spectacular stained-glass roofs with naval and decorative motifs made by Maumejean.
The map of Juan de la Cosa, the earliest preserved map of the Americas, is hosted in this museum. Since 2007 the museum has hosted a specimen of moon rock. One of two such samples given to Spain, it was collected on the 1972 Apollo 17 mission. The rock, which weighs one gram, was put on display in 2009, to mark the 40th anniversary of the first moon landing.

What's Wrong with Spanish Coffee? ????☕
Something is very wrong with Spanish coffee. If you buy a pack of coffee in the supermarket, or a café solo in a bar, it too often tastes like acrid burnt rubber. Want to know why? In this video I delve into the mysterious world of torrefacto! So venga, let’s go!

2. More About This Video ????
⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯
When I first moved to Spain in 2011, I would buy all my coffee at the supermarket. But it never tasted very good. It always had this acrid, bitter flavour. I drink my coffee black, and I found the stuff I was buying and drinking in bars almost undrinkable. It was like burnt rubber.
And then one day I looked a little closer at the coffee packet. And I noticed this common word, “mezcla”. I knew that mezcla meant mix or blend. But I thought - a blend of what? So I read further, and then I started seeing this word “torrefacto”. I had no idea what it was, but I suspected it had to do with what was going on with the coffee in this country.
So I started investigating further, and I discovered that torrefacto is a process that is applied to coffee beans sold in Spain that make the coffee taste, well, horrible. How the tradition got started is connected to the civil war. And why we still drink torrefacto coffee in Spain is about tradition, and, well, habit.
In this video I explain what torrefacto is, do a taste testing with my wife Yoly, and head to Toma Cafe to get a good cup of coffee!
Below is a list of great coffee places in Madrid:
Toma Café (Malasaña)
Toma Café (Chamberi)
Cafe Tornasol (Antón Martín market)
Zero Point (Lavaiés)
HanSo Café (Malasaña)

Veronica Rudge Green Prize in Urban Design 2015: Madrid RÍO
02/02/2016: The 12th Veronica Rudge Green Prize in Urban Design has been awarded to Madrid RÍO, a new linear park in Madrid designed by a team led by Ginés Garrido of Burgos & Garrido, including Porras & La Casta, Rubio & Álvarez-Sala, and West 8. The park entailed the creation of 120 hectares of new public space, which encompasses dozens of sports areas (tennis and basketball courts, soccer fields, fitness areas, rock climbing center, skate park), greenswards, plazas, cafes and restaurants, an orchard, an urban beach, children’s play areas, plus 30 kilometers of cycling paths and 11 new footbridges. The project also prompted the restoration of five historic dams and two historic bridges (the Puente de Segovia and Puente de Toledo), as well as the refurbishment of highway bridges and the recuperation of areas surrounding these infrastructural works. With these new river crossings and the incorporation of existing historic features into the new park plan, Madrid RÍO has strengthened surrounding neighborhoods’ connection to the new amenities and to each other.
According to Professor Rahul Mehrotra, chair of the jury, the decision to award Madrid Río the Green Prize was motivated by the jury’s desire to highlight the potential for thoughtfully planned and carefully executed mobility infrastructures to transform a city and its region. The extent to which the project harnesses the deployment of new infrastructures as an opportunity to repair and regenerate the city through carefully articulated design interventions is particularly valuable within the context of contemporary urbanization globally. The award ceremony will feature a brief presentation on the project by Ginés Garrido of Burgos & Garrido, with other team members in attendance. An exhibition on the project is on view in the Gund Hall lobby from January 19 to March 6, 2016.
