1953 Detroit Historical Society New Member Party and University of Michigan Football Game
2015.011.043
Silent color 16mm film containing footage shot at the Detroit Historical Society's New Member Party on October 24, 1953, followed by footage shot on the way to and at a University of Michigan football game on October 31, 1953.
The film opens with footage of people husking corn shot at the Day in the Country themed New Member Party at the home of Dr. Henry D. Stricker in Milford. In the corn field, two girls are then film kissing the same boy. Then the camera moves indoors to show a group of people seated around a table.
After a cut, a new segment of the film begins with a group of men talking near the corner of Park Avenue and Bagley Avenue, with the Tuller Hotel visible in the background. A bus stops on Bagley, and the men board. After a brief shot on board the bus, the men are then filmed seated in the grass eating boxed lunched from Sanders. The camera captures a close-up of the logo on the lid of one box. The film next finds the group gathered in front of a trio of buses, outside of Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor. People are filmed taking their seats in the bleachers. The remainder of the reel is dedicated to footage of the Wolverines playing against the University of Pennsylvania's Quakers.
The film is on a grey 3.75-inch plastic reel housed within a yellow Cine-Kodak Kodachrome box. The form on the box is made out to H.M. Hastings in the Book Tower, and the box is stamped with a postmark for November 10, 1953.
Memorial for a great Michigan H O Railroad that no longer there
PLEASE READ ALL OF THE DESCRIPTION BEFORE COMMENTING!
This video was taken with a $80.00 Sonya digital camera that take clips. I cannot control exposures etc. I used MS Movie Maker . The Muskegon Railroad Historical Society has been a fixture of downtown Muskegon in the second floor of the Muskegon Heritage Museum/ Association On West Western Avenue for 33 years. The Muskegon Heritage Museum kicked us out with no place to go because they needed our space. So this layout at the time I wrote this is 66% demolished. It was never done and buildings etc were being added or planned. This layout was DCC controlled even to the extent of using our own WiFi stick on a computer to run trains via Android or Iphones.
This is a remake of an earlier video that I deleted because even through it was a recording of me playing in the symphony, some one claimed “Copy Right” of a recording they did not have. I muted the music and substituted recordings of the Charlie/Larry Bird Skylarks Big Band recorded at the long gone Fruitport Pavilion(Burned down in 1961) in the 1950’s with a reel to reel recorder and transferred by a friend of mine to CD. Hopefully, I won’t have a “ Third Party Copy Right” issue on a 60 year old recording of a band and place no longer in existence and have to delete this version too!
Ionia Michigan 1868 Panoramic Bird's Eye View Map 7034
Panoramic Maps, also known as Bird's Eye View, aerial view, or perspective maps. These were a popular form of art at the turn of the 20th century depicting a city's key points of interest.
Unlike traditional maps, Panoramic maps often highlighted the commercial aspects of a town, while also clearly showing many local residences.
I've had a lot fun looking up places I've been to on these maps -- and I've gotta say - It's amazing just how much things change -- and also how much things stay the same.

TRRS 267: Grand Rapids Model Railroad Historical Society Layout Action
The Grand Rapids Model Railroad Historical Society owns one of the largest permanent layouts in Michigan. Operated out of a building formerly used as a fish hatchery, they open their doors several times per year to visitors. After filming Marquette Rail, whose tracks run right behind the building, I noticed that their Fall open house was in session, so I went in to take a look around.
The clips seen in this video follow two Pere Marquette trains around the layout, which feature representations of the old Pere Marquette Empire in the state of Michigan. As I was not prepared to be filming trains, this isn't my finest camerawork, but it is a fabulous layout deserving of a showcase.

The Re-interment of Civil War Veteran DC Calkins
The story of the discovery of Civil War Veteran D.C. Calkin's remains in an abandoned Oscoda county Michigan cemetery. It's also the story of how the family of D.C. Calkins searched for his remains for many years until an unusual sequence of events led to what you are about to witness. The re-interment of the war vets remains. An amazing story of serendipity. From the discovery of the cemetery with a sole grave left undisturbed after evacuation...to the investigation by Michigan reporters Judy Kurnick of the Owosso Argus and Bob Dobski of the Oscoda County News...then to the families eventual contact after reading reports....and then to an all-out full blown re interment complete with a funeral of the era being performed by recreationists. DC Calkins was exhumed and re-interned at Kittle Cemetary near Mio.

Grand Rapids, Michigan
Grand Rapids is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan. It is located on the Grand River about 25 miles east of Lake Michigan. As of the 2010 census, the city population was 188,040. In 2010, the Grand Rapids metropolitan area had a population of 1,005,648, and the combined statistical area of Grand Rapids-Muskegon-Holland had a population of 1,321,557. Grand Rapids is the county seat of Kent County, Michigan, second largest city in Michigan (after Detroit), and the largest city in West Michigan. A historic furniture-manufacturing center, Grand Rapids is still home to five of the world's leading office furniture companies, and is nicknamed Furniture City. Its more common modern nickname of River City refers to the landmark river for which it was named. The city and surrounding communities are economically diverse, and contribute heavily to the health care, information technology, automotive, aviation, and consumer goods manufacturing industries, among others.
Grand Rapids was the home of The First Family of U.S, Boxing: Floyd Sr., Jr., Jeff, and Roger Mayweather, World Championship Boxer James Toney, singer and song writer Anthony Kiedis, the filmmakers Paul Schrader and Leonard Schrader, the singer Al Green and U.S. President Gerald Ford, who—along with his wife Betty—is buried on the grounds of the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum in Grand Rapids.
