Cork is really a town, not a city. It has a population of about 100,000 residents and is the second largest city in Ireland (Cork county has about 450,000 inhabitants in total). I personally have a love/hate relationship with this place. Sometimes I get frustrated with how quiet it is and how small shopping street is here and then when I leave, I look forward to coming back here and then I get frustrated again as it seems to be so busy in the city and I go back home to suburbia of Cork and think how I wish I was elsewhere. However, Cork has a very relaxed lifestyle. Traffic almost does not exist here. Parking is fairly easy and with a small population, places get rarely over-crowded (which is a good thing in my book). There are a number of very good old and new pubs/bars which make it a good place for a pub crawl. There are also a number of options for a walk. There are maps of trails called “Cork City Walks” and you can follow any of those to enhance the city experience.

We have arrived in Ireland! We have been looking forward to film this series, and we start with a brief introduction touring Cork City. After jumping into our rental car, we hit the highway and head south from our cottage. Highlights include walking around the Shandon Historical Quarter, visiting the English Market and grabbing a couple pints of delicious beer on offer at the Franciscan Well Brewery. Of course, no visit to Cork is complete without going to Blackrock Castle, probably the most adorable structure I've ever seen! This is a great way to start our Irish shenanigans.

Cork City: An Ireland Tour and Travel Guide

Cork City is unique in that it’s a city on an island, surrounded by the River Lee’s two channels. In fact, many of the city’s streets are built over waterways, so expect to cross countless bridges during your stay. The quaint town center is also located upstream from Cork City Harbour, the world’s second-largest natural harbor.
Take a city tour and revel in the architectural splendor of this historical town. You can’t miss Saint Fin Barre’s Cathedral, which looks like a castle with its three spires and gothic designs. Dating back to 1870, this gargoyle-adorned cathedral is made from limestone, bath stone, and marble. Check out the magnificent stained glass and the intricate carvings scattered throughout the complex.
For another look at the town’s past, make your way over to the Cork City Gaol. The prison originally opened in 1824, holding both men and women, but in 1878, it became the Women’s Gaol. During British control and the Irish War of Independence, many Republican women were imprisoned here. The gaol closed in 1923, but oddly enough, it became the site of the city’s first radio broadcasting station. During your visit, take a guided tour of the prison grounds and learn fascinating stories of the past.
Looking for more exciting things to do in Cork City? Shop around the English Market. With roots dating back to 1788, this market is considered one of the oldest of its kind. Saunter around the countless vendors selling fresh poultry, meat, cheese, cakes, and more. A feast for your eyes—and stomach—you’ll find local treats, crafts, and even souvenirs at this eclectic bazaar.
If you don’t mind cruising roughly 6 miles northwest of the city, head to the famous Blarney Castle. You’ve probably heard of the legend, which says that if you kiss the Blarney Stone you’ll receive the gift of eloquence, so why not give it a shot? Besides puckering up, you’ll come across other seemingly magical spots, such as the Witch’s Stone and Wishing Steps. Explore the surrounding meadows, view the ruins of the Court, and venture into the dungeon.
Dublin often gets all the attention, but many Corkonians like to consider Cork City the “real capital” of Ireland. Visit this harbor city and decide for yourself if it deserves the capital title.

Top best places to visit in Cork, Ireland
Cork, the second largest city in the Republic of Ireland, lies in the south of the country.
In reference to the city’s role during the Irish Civil War Corkonians often refer to the city as “The Real Capital”.
The center of the city forms an island between two channels of the River Lee.
There are about thirty bridges over the North and South channels.
On the banks of the river is the National Monument.
On the island are located also many important buildings, such as:
The Courthouse.
The Holy Trinity Friary, a Roman Catholic church affiliated with the Capuchin.
The Triskel Arts Centre, an 18th century Church turned into the Center for Contemporary Arts.
The Opera House which has always housed performances of all types and the Crawford Art Gallery a museum dedicated to the visual arts.
And finally the City Museum, which is mainly focused on the history and archeology of the Cork.
Adjacent to the museum Fitzgerald’s Park is a perfect place for a walk and a rest.
There are important landmarks outside the main island as well, such as:
The City Hall, the administrative headquarters of Cork.
The magnificent St Finbarr’s Cathedral, a fine 19th century neo-Gothic church.
The central bell tower of the Red Abbey, one of the last remaining visible structures of Cork.
And the castle-like City Gaol, a restored 19th century former prison, which is now a museum.
Everybody can enjoy the variety of architecture at the University College Cork being open to the public.
A great example of modernist style is within the grounds of University, the Lewis Glucksman Gallery.
Having been active military and police barracks for more than 400 years, the Elizabeth Fort was a 17th-century defensive fortification on high-ground.
From there you can enjoy the beautiful view of the city.
Another good place to see the city from high up is from St Anne’s Church, which is on the other side of town.
