Sustainability is the number one concern of the 21st century. From the mitigation of climate change, maintenance of earth’s biodiversity and eradication of poverty, to the sustainable operation of the transport and logistics systems that drive the global economy, sustainability is a challenge that needs a robust and dynamic solution.
At Cornell University, the Institute for Computational Sustainability brings together researchers within the university, as well as across the USA and throughout the world to meet these challenges. Funded by the National Science Foundation, the ICS is designed to capitalise on the gains made in computational ability, big data and machine learning, and apply it in ways that may fundamentally improve our lives and the world around us.
Founded in 2008, early ICS projects exploited the strength of Cornell’s work in Ornithology. By tracking and modelling the migration of birds, as well as other species, researchers are able to identify those habitats most in need of protection. In materials science, better modelling of new materials allows for a more cost effective and intelligent approach to the iterative design process in the development of everything from photovoltaics to new kinds of battery. In transport, ICS researchers pioneered the prediction and analysis of the movement of resources within bike-sharing networks in the United States biggest cities.
Mathematics and computation have the capacity to describe and solve the most complex of systems. At the same time, the application of state-of-the-art mathematics to dynamic, organic systems – from bike-sharing to the migration of birds – gives rise to new mathematical models and new tools. The Institute for Computational Sustainability exists to develop and utilise these tools for the benefit of society.

Ithaca is a city in the Finger Lakes region of New York. It is the seat of Tompkins County, as well as the largest community in the Ithaca–Tompkins County metropolitan area. This area contains the municipalities of the Town of Ithaca, the village of Cayuga Heights, and other towns and villages in Tompkins County. The city of Ithaca is located on the southern shore of Cayuga Lake, in Central New York, about 45 miles (72 km) south-west of Syracuse. It is named after the Greek island of Ithaca. Additionally, Ithaca is located 247 miles (398 km) southeast of Toronto, and 223 miles (359 km) northwest of New York City.
Ithaca is home to Cornell University, an Ivy League school of over 20,000 students, most of whom study at its local campus. In addition, Ithaca College is a private, nonsectarian, liberal arts college of over 7,000 students, located just south of the city in the Town of Ithaca, adding to the area's college town atmosphere. Nearby is Tompkins Cortland Community College (TC3). These three colleges bring tens of thousands of students, who increase Ithaca's seasonal population during the school year. The city's voters are notably more liberal than those in the remainder of Tompkins County or in upstate New York, generally voting for Democratic Party candidates.
As of 2010, the city's population was 30,014. A 2017 census estimate stated the population was 31,006.

Cornell University ( kor-NEL) is a private and statutory Ivy League research university in Ithaca, New York. Founded in 1865 by Ezra Cornell and Andrew Dickson White, the university was intended to teach and make contributions in all fields of knowledge—from the classics to the sciences, and from the theoretical to the applied. Last year a spike in the population of lemmings and ptarmigan in the arctic caused a higher that normal breeding rate amongst snowy owls. This year all those owls, now adults, have migrated south in search of food and territory of their own. Even Hawaii captured their first recorded glimpse of the spectacular bird. Though the snowy owl is generally a rare sight in western New York, this winter birders have recorded dozens of sightings throughout the region.
Naturally, the Lookin' at it boys were on top of this rare opportunity, and a search spanning most of the winter began. This episode is the culmination of that search. With friend and fellow nature enthusiast Robbyn Drake along for the ride and an elusive Owl Biologist thrown into the mix, our protagonists find themselves closer than ever to these mysterious creatures.
If there's anything we've learned from our brief career in nature documentation, it's how to appreciate the little things, like the excitement of catching a fleeting glimpse of one of nature's rare and beautiful predators. So here's to life's little victories.
