National Soaring Museum | Path Through History | WSKG
NATIONAL SOARING MUSEUM
Located at the top of Harris Hill in Elmira, 1700 feet above sea level and directly across from the Harris Hill soaring airfield, is one of only two museums in the country dedicated to motor-less flight.
Long regarded as the Soaring Capital of the World, Elmira started hosting national soaring contests in the 1930's. Popularity of the sport grew and during World War II, Elmira was chosen to develop a glider program to train pilots for the war effort.
Over the years it became clear that a dedicated museum was needed, and in 1969, the Soaring Society of America designated Harris Hill as the site for a National Soaring Museum. The museum now houses the world's largest collection of motor-less aircraft and is recognized as the primary historical institution for motor less flight in the United States.
The National Soaring Museum is an invaluable resource for those who love aviation history and another important stop along New Yorks Path Through history.

Elmira Prison Camp | Path Through History | WSKG
ELMIRA PRISON CAMP | Chemung County
After the election of Abraham Lincoln in 1861, the country erupted into Civil War and Elmira became an integral part of the North’s war effort. At first, railroad lines that crisscrossed the area brought raw recruits to train at Camp Rathbun located within the city.
As the war raged on, Camp Rathbun fell into disuse and in July 1864, a part of its 30 acres was converted into a prison to house the increasing numbers of Confederate prisoners of war. Between the summer of 1864 and the fall of 1865, Elmira Prison Camp housed more than 12,000 southern prisoners. Conditions were atrocious, and about one out of every four prisoners would perish from a variety of causes.
Many of the Confederate dead are buried in nearby Woodlawn National Cemetery. After the war, the camp was closed and dismantled, and while much of the camp has disappeared from the landscape, its importance continues to make it part of New York’s Path Through History.

An oral history interview conducted with Dr. Daniel J. Doyle, emeritus professor and master teacher at Pennsylvania College of Technology. Dr. Doyle joined the faculty in 1967 and retired from full-time teaching in 2005. In addition to teaching, Dr. Doyle served the college in numerous administrative and leadership roles. In retirement, he's been collecting oral histories in support of the college's centennial celebration. The interviewer is Elaine Lamber, director of College Information and Community Relations.

Albany ( (listen) ALL-bə-nee) is the capital of the U.S. state of New York and the seat of Albany County. Albany is located on the west bank of the Hudson River approximately 10 miles (16 km) south of its confluence with the Mohawk River and approximately 150 miles (240 km) north of New York City.
Albany is known for its rich history, commerce, culture, architecture, and institutions of higher education. Albany constitutes the economic and cultural core of the Capital District of New York State, which comprises the Albany-Schenectady-Troy, NY Metropolitan Statistical Area, including the nearby cities and suburbs of Troy, Schenectady, and Saratoga Springs. With a 2013 Census-estimated population of 1.1 million the Capital District is the third-most populous metropolitan region in the state. As of the 2010 census, the population of Albany was 97,856.
The area that later became Albany was settled by Dutch colonists who in 1614, built Fort Nassau for fur trading and, in 1624, built Fort Orange. In 1664, the English took over the Dutch settlements, renaming the city as Albany, in honor of the then Duke of Albany, the future James II of England and James VII of Scotland. The city was officially chartered in 1686 under English rule. It became the capital of New York in 1797 following formation of the United States. Albany is one of the oldest surviving settlements of the original British thirteen colonies, and is the longest continuously chartered city in the United States.During the late 18th century and throughout most of the 19th, Albany was a center of trade and transportation. The city lies toward the north end of the navigable Hudson River, was the original eastern terminus of the Erie Canal connecting to the Great Lakes, and was home to some of the earliest railroad systems in the world. In the 1920s, a powerful political machine controlled by the Democratic Party arose in Albany. In the latter part of the 20th century, Albany experienced a decline in its population due to urban sprawl and suburbanization; however, the New York State Legislature approved a $234 million building and renovation plan for the City in the 1990s that spurred renovation and building projects around the downtown area. In the early 21st century, Albany has experienced growth in the high-technology industry, with great strides in the nanotechnology sector.
