Outer Banks Corolla Wild Horses - How Did They Get Here?
With Karen McCalpin, Executive Director of the Corolla Wild Horse Fund
A lot of the questions that visitors come down and ask are about the wild horses, which is one of the area's top attractions. And they ask, 'How did they originally get here?'.
There are three schools of thought about their arrival, the most documented one is being put ashore in 1528 down in what is now Cape Lookout National Seashore. It was Cape Fear then. Ships have run aground on sandbars, they had to lighten the load so the heavy things went overboard, and one of the most heavy things on the ship were horses, and they were also the most expendable. So the horses went overboard and were able to swim ashore in the shallow water, and National Geographic documented 5,000 wild horses on the Outer Banks by 1926.
Another thing is, I know up north (in Virginia) they're ponies and they're horses here, Assateague and Chincoteague. What's the difference and how do they relate to each other at all?
Well at one point in time, all of the horses on the East Coast were Spanish horses. But depending on who settled the area, for example Virginia was settled by primarily the English, so when they came they brought Shetland ponies and Welsh ponies and Connemara ponies and crossed them with the Spanish horses that they found. And then over the centuries, because it's a farming community, they brought in a lot of other domestic breeds, so now you have whatever exists as the cute Chincoteague pony, but it's a pony. Our horses (in Corolla) are genetically horses. They're small horses, and might be pony sized, some of them, but they are horses. And because of their isolation here on the Outer Banks, they've been DNA tested twice and remain pure.
And you also do horse tours here as well, through the Corolla Wild Horse Fund, correct?
We do. Our emphasis is a little different, it's on education and we take only small groups. Our purpose is to connect people with our mission and let them know why it's so important to protect and preserve this national treasure. Because it doesn't matter what state you're from, these are nobody's horses but they're everybody's horses.
Wild horse killed in Corolla
13News Now reporter Meghan Puryear brings you this story.
Wild Mustangs in Corolla, North Carolina!
Yes! There are still wild mustangs -- “North America’s first true horse, the Colonial Spanish Horse” -- on the East Coast of the United States. Apparently, the Mustangs are evidence of what the Spanish colonists left behind as early as the 1500’s. These horses are here as part of a conservation program started in 2001.
The conservation program continues today, and the mustangs roam between the 700 houses and the dunes. The wild horses remain wild as humans are not encouraged to make direct contact with them. In other words, don’t feed the horses!
At the southern end of the area which contains the Mustangs, there is a gate which stops the Mustangs from roaming more south.

Corolla Wild Mustangs
Because of injuries or dependencies, these horses could not return to the wild so the Corolla Wild Horse Fund has arranged for their maintenance adjacent to the Currituck Beach Lighthouse where they can be seen.
You can see wild horses walking along the beach on the Outer Banks north of Corolla to the Virginia State line, which has been designated by a Currituck County ordinance as a Wild Horse Sanctuary. For the safety of the public and the horses, the ordinance also makes it unlawful for anyone to harm, approach, and feed or kill any wild horse in the sanctuary. Wild horses are occasionally seen on the refuge and visitors are advised to view them from a distance. Nowhere else can you see wild Mustangs walking along the beach and they don't have a healthy fear of humans with continued exposure to humans on the beach and it doesn't matter how tame they seem wild horses will also bite and kick.

North Carolina's Wild Horses Will Ride Out Hurricane Florence In The Wild
As Hurricane Florence approaches the North Carolina, many wonder about the fate of the state’s beloved wild horses.
The Corolla Wild Horse Fund reports, the 90 to 100 horses will remain on the barrier island when the storm hits.
They have really good instincts. These horses have lived in this area for 500 years. We can already see now, they’re starting to group together. They know where the high ground is. They know where to go.”
Meg Puckett, herd manager for the Corolla Wild Horses of the Currituck Outer Bank, to HuffPost.
HuffPost reports, other groups of wild horses across the state will remain in place as well.
Florence is projected to hit the Carolinas as a Category 4 storm.

Breaking;Hurricane Florence: How wild horses in North Carolina will survive the deadly storm
Village food company
Herds of wild horses roaming across North Carolina have used their instincts to survive major storms like Hurricane Florence for centuries.
As the Category 2 hurricane churns towards the US coastline with an expanding potential for rain and storm surges, experts have said they are confident the horses will endure yet another natural disaster.
Wild horses are believed to have first settled on the Outer Banks hundreds of years ago and have survived many powerful storms.
Sue Stuska, a wildlife biologist based at Cape Lookout National Seashore, where 118 wild horses live on Shackleford Banks, said the horses are highly sensitive to weather changes and instinctively know what to do in a storm. She said they go to higher ground during flooding, including the dunes, and head for shrub thickets and a maritime forest during high winds.
“Naturally, they are meant to be outside and they have high ground and they have thick places to hide,” Ms Stuska said. ”Don't worry about them. They've survived for hundreds of years, and we expect that they'll be just fine.”
The Corolla Wild Horse Fund, a group devoted to protecting and managing a herd of wild Colonial Spanish Mustangs that roams on the northernmost Currituck Outer Banks, posted a message on its Facebook page Monday to reassure horse lovers that they expect the animals will be just fine.

2HEADLINE: Advocates say N.C.'s wild horses at risk
CAPTION: A boom in vacation homes in the last 25 years in this remote place has seen the descendants of colonial Spanish mustangs confined to a 7,500-acre sanctuary on the northern tip of North Carolina's Outer Banks, and now the herd itself may shrink along with its habitat. (Sept. 20)
AN IDYLLIC SCENE ON NORTH CAROLINA'S OUTER BANKS. BUT ADVOCATES SAY THESE WILD HORSES FACE A DIFFICULT FUTURE.
(SOT: Karen McCalpin, executive director of the Corolla Wild Horse Fund)
(:25) the American wild horse is disappearing from our country. The problem is much worse out west than it is here, but to me, they're an american icon, just as much as the american eagle is.
THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT IS BACKING A PLAN TO REDUCE THE HERD, FROM ABOUT 115 HORSES TODAY, TO NO MORE THAN 60. THE GOVERNMENT CALLS THE HORSES A NON-NATIVE SPECIES AND WORRIES THEY ARE COMPETING WITH FEDERALLY PROTECTED BIRDS FOR RESOURCES.
(SOT: MCCALPIN)
(1:08) they've lived here wild and free for almost 5 centuries. And that in itself, makes them worthy of our protection. They are the north carolina state horse. they are also on the critically endangered, nearly extinct breed list.
THE HORSES HAVE BEEN SQUEEZED BY MAN. A BOOM IN VACATION HOME BUILDING HAS CONFINED THE HEARD TO A 75-HUNDRED ACRE SANCTUARY.
(SOT: MCCALPIN)
(3:07) it's getting developed, there are 3009 plotted lots here right now and there are over 1300 houses built in this entire area.
THE HORSES ALSO DRIVE TOURISM.
(SOT: BROWN)
(1:33) if you don't have the horses, you can't say come see the wild horses. It just wouldn't have the same appeal. And people come back year after year after year and do these tours.
RICHARD BROWN OF WILD HORSE ADVENTURE TOURS SAYS REDUCING THE HERD WOULD ALSO REDUCE WORKERS.
(SOT: RICHARD BROWN/WILD HORSE ADVENTURE TOURS)
(1:17) during the peak season we have 24 employees here. So that would be 24 employees that wouldn't have a job. Four full time employees wouldn't have a job. And that's just my company.
A NORTH CAROLINA CONGRESSMAN IS PUSHING A BILL THAT WOULD KEEP THE POPULATION BETWEEN 120 AND 130 HORSES. IT WOULD ALSO ALLOW MARES FROM ANOTHER HERD TO BOOST THE GENETIC DIVERSITY. ONE ANIMAL EXPERT SAYS THE HORSES ALREADY SHOW SIGNS OF INBREEDING.
:15 it's a very very popular attraction. If the herd was to dwindle down to say 60, then definitely the genetic diversity wouldn't be there and there'd be a lot of interbreeding going on there. And that would definiitely result in the herd being diminished or compeltely being eradicated.
:41 the tours, not just my company, but the other companies as well, we bring in a lot of traffic from outside the area. 50 it's a destination based business. So people come from outside the area here and spend money. 57 it generates taxes, local jobs. Here we've got four full time members of staff.
1:17 during the peak season we have 24 employees here. So that would be 24 employees that wouldn't have a job. Four full time employees wouldn't have a job. And that's just my company.
1:33 if you don't have the horses, you can't say come see the wild horses. It just wouldn't have the same appeal. And people come back year after year after year and do these tours.
1;46 they love to come back, see the herd, see them grow up.

700 Pound Snake Pulled out of Lake in North Carolina
Giant 700 pound snake caught in lake in Proctor, North Carolina. The giant man eating python was measured at 98 feet long. Police were contacted to see if there have been any recently filed missing person reports as a snake this big could have surely eaten a human.
This giant snake is massive and just gorgeous, but it didn't take long to find out that the STORY behind it... was fake, just another hoax.
While the image is indeed real, I think the size of the giant snake could have been exaggerated due to the camera angle
Nevertheless, this snake is still huge, but where did it come from? The markings on it's skin looks similar to that of a reticulated python native to Southeast Asia. After playing around with a little Google translate, the mystery was finally solved.
This giant python came from Indonesia and after some rough translating, it turns out that it was discovered this last Thanksgiving near the village of Belinyu City. It was found by accident by a group of construction workers who severely injured the reptile while knocking down a large dead tree in which the python was sleeping inside of. The workers put the dying snake out of it's misery and buried it.
It's sad to see such an incredible animal killed, especially one that could have been a new world record size. I wish there were more pictures so we could get a better idea of just how large it was.
I really enjoyed learning about this amazing snake, if you guys have any cool wildlife stories or interesting animals that you think I might enjoy, tell me about it on Facebook

[Wikipedia] Currituck Banks North Carolina National Estuarine Research Reserve
Corolla is an unincorporated community located in Poplar Branch township, Currituck County, North Carolina along the northern Outer Banks. It has a permanent population of approximately 500 people; during the summer vacation season, the population surges into the thousands. Corolla is home to the Currituck Beach Lighthouse, one of the seven North Carolina coastal lighthouses.
Previously a quiet and little-known location, a development boom in the 1980s sparked growth in the area, and Corolla has become a popular vacation destination. Resting between the Currituck Sound and the Atlantic Ocean, Corolla attracts mainly beach-goers, especially in the summer months. Besides the beach, Corolla is home to many other attractions including the historic Whalehead Club, Currituck Beach Lighthouse, Center for Wildlife Education, shopping, dining, water sports, and Corolla’s wild horses.Corolla is home to about 119 feral Banker horses. They are located on a 12,000-acre (49 km²) animal sanctuary situated north of the populated areas of Corolla. The Corolla Wild Horse Fund is a public charity whose mission is to protect and preserve the herd. Over fifty thousand people come to see these wild horses every week in the summer months, which makes horses a major tourist attraction and a major economic activity in the area, but also poses risks to their safety.
