BEST HIKE IN THE COROMANDEL NEW ZEALAND ? NZ | twoplustwocrew
Tabitha and I hiked to the top of the pinnacles on the Coromandel range. Great day walk and the last 1/2 hour is fun climbing up ladders and steep track. Great views at the top... but it was super windy the day we went. The hike starts in the Kauaeranga Valley near Thames.

The Pinnacles; Kauaeranga Kauri Trail; Coromandel Forest Park (with Stelley08)
This winter, I went with both my sisters, some of their friends, and also with Steve, one half of the stelley08 YouTube channel ( to hike to the Pinnacles and also the Pinnacles Hut, in the Coromandel Forest Park, or Coromandel Range, and in the Kauaeranga Valley. We took the Billy Goat track on the way up, dropped off our gear at the hut, then carried on to the Pinnacles themselves, and returned to stay the night at the hut. Some of us got some sleep, some of us were kept awake by a bunch of stoned, drinking and partying Burning Man KiwiBurn idiots. (They do the hike once a year, make sure your trip doesn't coincide with theirs - they get all hoity-toity if you tell then to shut up). Finally, we took the Webb Creek track on the way back down (which is a bit shorter than the Billy Goat route).

The Coromandel Peninsula on the North Island of New Zealand extends 85 kilometres north from the western end of the Bay of Plenty. The peninsula is steep and hilly, and is largely covered in temperate rainforest. The Coromandel Range forms a spine for the peninsula, rising to nearly 900 metres. A forest park covers much of the peninsula's interior. It comprises the eroded remnants of the Coromandel Volcanic Zone, which was highly active during the Miocene and Pliocene periods. Volcanic activity has since primarily shifted southeast to the Taupo Volcanic Zone. Geothermal activity is still present on the Peninsula, with hot springs in several places.

Crosbies Hut - Coromandel, New Zealand
After fruitlessly waiting for weeks for a big high to hit the South Island we decided on a quick 2 day tramp to Crosbies Hut in the Coromandel Forest Park on the North Island of New Zealand (90mins drive from Auckland). This well positioned, slightly funky hut is a worthy overnighter. The bush is monotonous but beautiful and the abundant birdsong was nice to hear. We accessed via a track from the Kauaeranga Valley Road which took a steady 5 hrs to climb to the hut and then returned in a similar time down to Thames on the Karaka Track. The 10 bed bookable Crosbies Hut gave great views all around and it also provides comfortable tent platforms (5 number). Droney McDrone followed us along for the first time in NZ on this trip in Dec 2019.
Exploring the Coromandel Peninsula & Coromandel Coastal Walkway | VAN LIFE NEW ZEALAND
This week we continue our adventure towards the Northern tip of the Coromandel Peninsula.
Encountering our first New Zealand gravel roads, steadily we made our way towards Fletcher bay campsite, where the road literally ends. In order to go further North, you have to do so by foot! Not wanting to be beaten by the lack of man made travel routes, we got our hiking boots on and took to the hills.
Exploring the Coromandel Coastal walkway for a few hours was absolutely one of the highlights of the trip thus far. Rolling grassy hills, roaming sheep and patches of tropical like forest made this one of the best hikes we’ve done for a long time.

Crosbies Hut Thames Coromandel New Zealand
Crosbies Hut was built in 2010 and offers panoramic views of the Coromandel Main Range - north towards Maumaupaki and Mercury Bay and from the Firth of Thames in the west to Table Mountain and the Upper Kauaeranga Valley in the east. The lights of Whitianga are visible at night. View a photo gallery.
The hut is situated in an old farming settlement established in 1880, with Thomas Hunter Crosbie being the first settler. Access was by foot, horseback or horse-drawn sledge. There are still some fences alongside the track leading up to the hut. The area became part of the Coromandel Forest Park in 1970.
At the hut site there is a memorial for two Swedish tourists who went missing while tramping in the area in 1989.
Getting there
Crosbies hut is located on the Memorial Loop Track off the Main Range Track, approximately 12 km north east of Thames.
The Hut can be accessed from a number of tracks, with two access points from Thames township (Waiotahi and Karaka), two off the Thames Coast Highway (SH 25) (Te Puru and Waiomu) one off the Tapu-Coroglen Road and one from the Kauaeranga Valley. The Waiotahi Track can be extremely muddy in wet weather. Allow 4 to 6 hours for all access tracks to Crosbies Hut.

Coromandel Forest Park, the Pinnacles_2
Tairua, The Coromandel New Zealand
Tairua is an excellent base to explore the east coast and offshore islands or the craggy mountainous backdrop to the west. The twin peaks of Mt Paku guard the harbour entrance and provide a 360 degree view from the Aldermen Islands round to The Pinnacles in The Coromandel Forest Park. Tairua is only minutes away from bush and kauri grove walks, old mines and caves and Pauanui is only a short ferry ride across the harbour. The offshore islands of Slipper, Shoe and the Aldermen Islands can also be explored by booking a trip with local dive and fishing charters.

Gold prospecting in Coromandel Forest Park
In the Parakiwai Valley of Coromandel Forest Park, gold prospecting is closing conservation land and destroying the habitat of Archey's frogs. Local guide Clive Duxfield showed Forest & Bird Regional Manager Rebecca Stirnemann through the valley, and discovered fresh damage from prospecting sites.
The area is known habitat for the citically endangered Archey's frog, and even with the best efforts at mitigation, there is going to be an impact on them. These frogs are more precious than any gold. The Government should be protecting the remaining places where they live, not allowing gold mining to destroy this specially protected conservation land.
