Council Grounds State Park - Merrill, Wisconsin
This 508 acre park along the Wisconsin River in north-central Wisconsin has been used by humans for centuries. Some park artifacts date back to around 600 AD. Native American Chippewas met for celebrations here beginning around 1600 AD. In the late 19th century loggers met here to sort the rafted lumber for downstream mills. The park site is beautifully situated with the Lake Alexander flowage on it's north and the Wisconsin River on it's west side. Nature trails take you past the park's impressive stands of White Pine. The huge old cottonwoods as they cast reflections on the historic North Platte River and lend shade to visitors. The North Platte River provides a natural habitat for a variety of wildlife, and for fishing, canoeing and rafting. Today, a visitor can utilize picnic tables, grills, group shelters, playgrounds and a launching ramp for canoes or rafts. A universally accessible fishing pier, the only one like it in the state, has become one of the finest amenities provided to visitors. An additional 2.8 miles of accessible hard-surfaced paths provide visitors with an opportunity view some of the finest wildlife in the area. Anglers can try their fishing luck in the North Platte River. Swimmers can take a refreshing dip at the park swimming area. Bird watching enthusiasts can wile away the hours searching for yellow warblers, cedar waxwings, downy woodpeckers, and dozens of others. U.S. Presidential Democratic nominee Walter (Fritz) Mondale and running mate Geraldine Ferraro started their 1984 campaign against President Ronald Reagan on Labor Day in both NYC and Merrill, Wis. Also in attendance were Wis. Governor Tony Earl and Wis. Rep. Dave Obey. This video was taken at the Merrill fairgrounds and was edited to a few short clips. The video is shaky because I was standing on a chair behind the audience. The major networks and local TV stations had their video teams on a platform next to the stage. I have their news segments recorded but am not uploading them do to copyright laws. President Ronald Reagan won the November election by a landslide, winning 49 states.
