Dark Horse Coffee Shop, old beer bottles + old Belfast Photos
I'm down on the city side of the A2 near the docks, in what could be loosely termed as Belfast's Cathedral Quarter. This section of the city is characterised by it's narrow link lanes, cobbled alleys and it's numerous welcoming pubs and eateries. The Duke of York Bar and Dark Horse Coffee Shop in particular are not to be missed on any visit.
If you want to see this for yourself come down to Commercial Court, Exchange Place, Hill Street in and around the entry/courtyard area of the iconic Duke of York Pub.
As well as an excellent extensive set of wall murals there are dozens of large black and white photographs of old Belfast life and times along the street.
Traveller Review
' Staff was very courteous and after having scones over the 3 weeks we traveled throughout Ireland and Northern Ireland that there scones were the best throughout the Emerald Isles. As other reviewers have noted The Dark Horse doesn't capitalize on their GOT Door it's just part of the cozy decor of this well appointed European style coffee house. '
The Dark Horse has an array of small old beer bottles from a bygone age. On top of this you have a Game of Thrones Door!
( I want to go back and video this. )
As I always say, you've got to come and see this for yourself.

ATTEMPTING LIFE IN BELFAST
Downing Students - Cambridge Location Film
Downing Students have over 25 years experience, specialising in contemporary, purpose built student housing. With accommodation in Newcastle, Leeds, Liverpool, Cambridge and London, Downing believe that their properties are the ideal base for a students university experience to be built on.
Working in conjunction with digital agency Ripple Effect, STANDBY were briefed to create a number of films for Downing to promote their accommodations, the student experience within each of these cities, location films based around key landmarks, student testimonials and a company overview film encompassing all of the above. With the idea being to keep them each down to 90-120 seconds in length, Downing wanted films that would be fresh, dynamic and engaging, and help set them apart from the rest of their industry.
STANDBY filmed in each of the 5 cities over the course of a few weeks, spending time working with the students through interviews and location filming, and setting about trying to give each of the films a distinctive look and feel. For the location films where we were primarily led by students, we decided on a hand-held documentary style to allow us to be as free and mobile as possible. For the building tour films we primarily used our tripod and Kessler Dolly (tracking left to right) system, to help make the films look as slick and high end as possible.
With all the footage accumulated, we headed into the edit suite for an intensive few weeks of editing, working in tandem with Ripple Effect to edit, amend and deliver a high volume of films in a short space of time.

Prague - The Sad City (1968)
Prague, Czechoslovakia. Footage shot in the 'Prague Spring of freedom', shortly before the Russian invasion is seen with a sombre but 'safe' commentary.
At Prague Airport we see a plane coming to a halt on the tarmac and people disembarking. Street scenes in Prague show people milling about, trams going by, people sitting at a pavement cafe, a man sells newspapers, another man looks in a food shop window, people eat ice-cream and sausages in the street. C/Us of statues of King Wenceslas and a saint holding a crucifix.
People walk along Charles Bridge; sentries in dark glasses are seen at the castle gates. Various shots of the cathedral; people going inside. Several shots of the part of the city beside the river, a man and boy throw stones in the water. Several shots of Prague castle and cathedral; the 14th century Karlstein Castle; Konopiste Castle (former home of Archduke Franz Ferdinand), statues in the grounds and peacocks, some with tails spread.
North of the city we see the 'Bohemian Paradise' - forests and rocky countryside; three women walk about and look at a large lake. More shots of the city. At an open-air cafe we see Olinka Berova (a bright young film star according to commentator) sipping wine; this beautiful blonde beckons us to go with her and wanders around some lovely gardens in the city, rows across a lake before the Valdstein (?sp) Palace, walks around the city, over the Charles Bridge and beside the river. We see an old, ornate clock with moving figures on the side of a building; Olinka walks through the cloisters of a former monastery, now a museum, and across the courtyard, then wanders around looking at Prague Castle and the cathedral.
She goes inside the cathedral and we see several stained-glass windows, then comes out through the castle gates and walks off down a long flight of steps leading back to the main city, turns and waves at us and skips off.
Cuts exist - see separate record.

February 22, 1920 Del Wood, Down Yonder
Polly Adelaide Hendricks Hazelwood (February 22, 1920 – October 3, 1989), known professionally as Del Wood, was an American pianist.
Biography
Hendricks was born in Nashville, Tennessee. A lifetime resident of Nashville, she was surrounded by the influences of early country music and the remaining vestiges of ragtime, particularly through the guitar pickers. She took up piano at age five, and played ragtime, gospel, and country music. Despite her parents' best efforts to encourage a direction towards classical music, the environment in Nashville, plus the early local programming on radio, convinced her that she wanted to play piano in the honky-tonk style. Her dream goal was the Grand Ole Opry, something she would realize in her early 30s.
Shortening her married name (Adelaide Hazelwood) to something easier to remember (and intentionally non-gender specific), Wood began playing in bands and honky-tonk joints in her 20s. After a decade of building repertoire and reputation, she spent some time as a staff pianist at WLBJ in Bowling Green, Kentucky. It was there that she was heard playing Down Yonder among other pieces, which led to a gig with a recording group called Hugh `Baby' Jarrett and his Dixieliners. This led to the first of many recording sessions for the Tennessee Records label starting in 1951. Down Yonder soon became a national hit in both the country and pop categories in Billboard record charts, sold over one million copies, and was awarded a gold disc. She is probably the first female country solo instrumentalist to sell a million copies of a record.
This success was turned into appearances on the Grand Ole Opry starting in 1952, which led to an eventual full-time gig there in 1953, fulfilling her long-time dream. Two years later her fame culminated with a contract from RCA Victor Records, where she would make some of the first country/honky-tonk stereo recordings in the late 1950s. While nothing else that she put out had the same success as Down Yonder, her offerings over the next decade were frequent and consistent. Wood gained the title, Queen of the Ragtime Pianists, sometimes shared with junior fellow plunker Jo Ann Castle. She was also divorced from her stage-namesake, Carson Hazelwood, during this period, but not before adopting a son they named Wesley.
In 1984, Del Wood appeared in the movie Rhinestone, starring Dolly Parton and Sylvester Stallone as the pianist in the Wild Possums Band.
During the Vietnam War, Wood was part of one of the Grand Ole Opry package tours that entertained troops overseas in 1968. Her recordings after the late 1960s were infrequent at best, but her appearances on the Opry continued until just before her death from a stroke on October 3, 1989 at the age of 69.
She was interred in the Mount Olivet Cemetery in Nashville.
