PORTOBELLO ROAD MARKET | From Notting Hill Gate To Portobello Road Market, London - United Kingdom
Portobello Road was known prior to 1740 as Green's Lane - a winding country path leading from Kensington Gravel Pits, in what is now Notting Hill Gate, up to Kensal Green in the north.
Portobello Road Market draws thousands of tourists each year. The main market day for antiques is Saturday, the only day when all five sections are opened: second-hand goods, clothing and fashion, household essentials, fruit, vegetables and other food, and antiques. However, there are also clothing, antique, bric-a-brac, fruit and vegetable stalls throughout the week and are located further north than the antiques, near the Westway Flyover. Shops and Cafes are opened daily.
The market began as many other London market and mainly sold fresh-food in the 19th century; antiques and wares dealers arrived in the late 1940s and '50s, and gradually antiques have become the very main attraction of this market, having a substantial number of them trading mainly on Saturday mornings. It is the largest antiques market in the UK.
The market section of Portobello Road runs in a direction generally between the north-northwest and the south-south-east. The northern terminus is at Golborne Road; the southern end is at Westbourne Grove, to the east. The market area is about 1,028 yards (940 m) long.
About one third of the way from its north end, the market runs beneath adjacent bridges of the A40 road and the Hammersmith & City line of the London Underground. Here the market focuses on second hand clothes as well as couture.

UK: LONDON FASHION WEEK OPENS
English/Nat
London Fashion Week has kicked off, with a notable absence of big British designers.
Alexander McQueen, Vivienne Westwood and Nicole Farhi have all defected to New York.
But fashion watchers say talent spotters won't be disappointed as there's a host of new talent set to fill the gap, making London a top destination for buyers, stylists and photographers hoping to glimpse the next big thing.
Two of the designers displaying their wares on Tuesday were Robert Cary-Williams and Red or Dead's Wayne Hemingway.
Britain's best-known designers may have decamped abroad this year, but there are many others keen to take their place on the catwalk.
They include designer Robert Cary-Williams, who launched his spring/summer 2000 collection at London Fashion Week on Tuesday.
Helping him out on the catwalk were top models Kate Moss and Naomi Campbell.
With the likes of Alexander McQueen in New York, Cary-Williams is being saddled with playing the part of London's next big designer.
But despite the absence of big names, fashion watchers are anticipating an exciting London Fashion Week, further bolstering the city's role as the hub of burgeoning European urban style.
Cary-Williams described his latest offerings as more feminine, cleaner and refined than his previous collection.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
In this one we're trying a different look from last year which was quite raw the last show, very rough, almost savage-like. This one is more feminine and the colours are quite vibrant and nice cuts... simple, quite simple garments and then a few shocking pieces... edgies, shocking pieces.
SUPER CAPTION; Robert Cary-Williams, Fashion designer
Also on Tuesday, Red or Dead's Wayne Hemingway presented a humorous, individual take on eclectic London street style.
His men's and women's designs have fans across the globe.
Hemingway said he had chosen to show in London because of its passionately non-elitist spirit.
More than a hundred designers will be showing their spring/summer 2000 collections during the official schedule this week.

3. SOUNDBITE (English) Claire Wilcox, Curator:
Dior had been a designer is Paris during the war and when he opened his house in 1947, nobody really knew the impact his first collection was going to have, but it was clear from the moment the first model stepped onto the catwalk that this was a quite different collection. He brought together many of the elements that had been in the air, for example, there had been a tendency towards longer, fuller skirts towards the end of the war. What Dior did, was he brought all these different elements together- the sloping shoulders, the synched in waist, the long full skirts. He changed accessories, he made hats smaller and neater, he changed clumpy wedges to neat court shoes. So, Dior really caught the mood of the moment. His clothes are very romantic, they presented a great alternative to the military war time fashions.
4. Various shot of accessories
5. SOUNDBITE (English) Claire Wilcox, Curator:
The look was particularly shocking to Britain and America, who'd adhered to fabric restrictions and austerity regulations. It was provocative because it demanded an enormous amount of fabric, more than anybody could really afford. On the other hand, from the French perspective, this new fashion did stimulate fabric sales and this, of course, helped the French economy. Very soon London learnt that the new look could work for them and the border trade eventually allowed it.

7. SOUNDBITE (English) Claire Wilcox, Curator:
The development of couture in London was very very important to the British economy. In 1942 the British fashion designers grouped together and formed an alliance and this group was called The Incorporated Society Of London Fashion Designers. What was important was they were emulating the union system of the French couture, which protected and publicised the activities of London couture designers. You have a small group constituted mainly of couture designers in London who focussed on tailoring, but also you had Norman Hartnell who designed state gowns for the Queen and Princess Margaret.

THE GOLDEN AGE OF COUTURE GOES ON SHOW
An exhibition of rare designer gowns go on display this week at the V&A Museum in London.
The show, entitled 'The Golden Age of Couture: Paris and London 1947 - 1957, showcases a period of time in which designer Christian Dior launched his 'New Look' collection - creating a new style that delighted and shocked the fashion world.
Described by Dior as 'The Golden Age,' this decade in fashion was a reaction to the hardships endured during the war years. Designs not only symbolised femininity but also decadence with full skirts made with an abundance of material creating hour-glass silhouettes.
The show features outfits from designers such as Balenciaga, Norman Hartnell, Givenchy, as well as of course Dior.
It also pays attentions to what impact the French fashion houses had on the British designer industry.
The development of couture in London was very very important to the British economy, notes Wilcox. In 1942 the British fashion designers grouped together and formed an alliance and this group was called The Incorporated Society Of London Fashion Designers. What was important was they were emulating the union system of the French couture, which protected and publicised the activities of London couture designers.

Let's all go - 'Made in England' Great little boutique - London Fashion
Finding Unique shops in London these days isn't easy, There is such a huge competition on the high street that people seem to forget about London's beautiful side streets, where personal shopping is not forgotten.
My first discovery was this small, extravagant clothing shop with an unrepeatable 1920's feel, almost like stepping back in time, with some of the highest quality men's and lady's clothing at an affordable price, from Harris tweed to Hand crafted shoes.
'Thomas Farthing' is situated on Museum Street, opposite the 'British Museum' - The Street alone has has a beautiful 'Charles Dickens' feel and is well known for its Range of 'Independent' Cafe's.

VALENTINO BRINGS 50 YEARS OF COUTURE TO LONDON
Iconic fashion designer Valentino was in London Wednesday (28 NOV) to launch a huge retrospective exhibition, which brings his entire couture archive to the UK.
With a career spanning five decades, the exhibition at London's Somerset House showcases more than 130 couture Valentino designs worn by the likes of Jackie Kennedy Onassis, Audrey Hepburn, Anne Hathaway and Julia Roberts.
The display was put together by design team Kinmonth Monfreda - long time Valentino collaborators.
Valentino, who was joined by his long time partner Giancarlo Giammetti, said he was delighted with the exhibition.
I feel very happy. I feel like the first day when I came and saw the dresses, of course I know the dresses by heart, but when I saw the clothes all placed like this, seated, as a spectator I was extremely happy, he said. When people come here for the first time, I think they'll have beautiful things to see.
Among the items on display are a red taffeta dress worn by actress Anne Hathaway to the 2011 Oscars and a cream organza evening gown worn by Audrey Hepburn.
However, Valentino's favorite dress of all time is the one he designed for Jackie Kennedy's wedding to Aristotle Onasis.
A close second is Julia Roberts' black velvet and tulle gown with white ribbon detailing, which she wore when she won her Best Actress Oscar in 2001.
