Zuraw - wooden port crane, Gdansk, Poland
Zuraw - wooden port crane, Gdansk, Poland (Żuraw na Motławą, Gdańsk, Polska)
The oldest documented mention of Zuraw as a wooden port crane was in 1367. What you see today, however, was reconstructed in the middle of the 15th century after a devastating fire devoured the original structure. The large crane was used to place masts on ships and to load cargo. During World War II, the wooden area was destroyed and only 60 % of the brick portion remained in tact. After the war, Zuraw was once again rebuilt and handed over to the museum. Today you can find different exhibits detailing the interesting history of the entire port of Gdansk. The crane is home to a branch of the Maritime Museum. Zuraw is open to visitors during the summer months from 10 AM to 6 PM -Saturdays are free!
The Crane in Gdansk (Krantor Danzig)
The Crane (Polish: Brama Żuraw) is probably the most famous landmark of Gdańsk, erected in the style of Brick Gothic. From the very beginning it served both as a city gate as well as a harbour crane.
In the Middle Ages this landmark over the Motlawa River was the largest port crane in Europe. Ever since reconstruction in the 1950s it is part of the Maritime Museum in Gdańsk.

Informacje ze strony:
Żuraw w Gdańsku to zabytkowy, najstarszy zachowany w Europie dźwig portowy.

GDANSK POLAND - Pirate ship to Westerplatte (Travel Vlog Day 3)
Be sure to check the beginning part of this trip:
Day three of our trip to Gdansk, Poland! Guess what - we went on a pirate ships to a world war II historic place - Westerplatte
We started the day by eating breakfast at a cute café called a la francaise in Gdansk :-)
After breakfast we went sightseeing in Gdansk and watched the famous crane (Zuraw). We decided to go for a boattrip in A PIRATE SHIP (or just a ship that looks like a pirate ship). The ship went from Gdansk to Westerplatte - a historic place that played an important role in world war II.
Onboard the Pirate Ship was nice live music and such a great atmosphere.
When we got back we had some drinks and a snackplatter at Hard Rock Café Gdansk.
We ended the evening at a great sushi restaurant Mito Sushi.
Hope you enjoyed yet another Gdansk travel adventure in Poland :D

Our visit Gdańsk travel guide documentary covers some of the top attractions including a food guide, top sightseeing tourist attractions and the city by day including visiting castles, churches and museums. We also cover off-the-beaten-path outdoor activities you won't find in a typical Gdańsk tourism brochure, Gdańsk itinerary or Gdańsk, Poland city tour.
10 Things to do in Gdańsk, Poland Travel Guide script:
After visiting the Basilica, we walked over to the main pedestrian street in Gdansk: Dluga, also known as Long Street. Unlike most Polish cities, Gdansk doesn’t have a main square, but this stretch of road acts as the equivalent with lots of vendors and performers along the way.
On the west end of Dluga (Dooga) we came across the Amber Museum, which sounded a little unusual, so we bought tickets and went up. Here we learned the history of Amber trade in the Baltic, and we also discovered that the tower that now houses the museum, was once a prison and torture chamber.
Not done with museums just yet, our next stop was the Historical Museum of the City of Gdansk. I think we spent more time staring at the ornate doorways, ceilings and staircases, than we did at the exhibit itself!
Here, we also saw the Medieval Crane, which was first mentioned in texts in 1367, and was at one point the biggest working crane in the world.
Next, it was all aboard the SS Sołdek, a Polish coal and ore freighter which is now a ship-museum.
And since we’re on the topic of food, we need to show you a milk bar we really enjoyed.
On our last day in Gdansk, we walked over to the European Solidarity Centre, which is about a 15-20 minute walk from the Old Town. The museum tells the story of Solidarity, a Polish trade union and civil resistance movement, founded in 1980 at the Lenin Shipyard. This was the first union not controlled by the communist party, and it’s a fascinating museum to learn a bit more about the history.
And that’s a wrap for our Gdansk travel guide. We hope you guys enjoyed this video and that it gave you a few ideas of things to do in Gdansk on you visit. You know the drill, if you have any other tips or suggestions to share with travellers, feel free to pop those in the comments section below. Happy travels and until next time!

Just like the Neptune fountain, the Crane, a former port crane, is one of the most famous symbols of Gdańsk, especially if it comes to its maritime past and glory. Therefore, no other place is more suitable for an exhibition devoted to activities of the former Gdańsk port. ( )
