Ferry boat to New Orleans
**Something happened to the sound of the video when I uploaded it to my computer. Do yourself a favor and just lower the volume or turn it off. No sound was missed unless if you wanted to hear a bunch of kids chattering and the loud boat engine**
Been a long time since I took the ferry boat from Algiers to New Orleans but I done it recently and had my camera with me and decided to record the length of time it took to reach the other side of the Mississippi River when it was moving. It was less than 5 minutes

Starling Birds Swarming in Downtown New Orleans Near Mississippi River
New Orleans
In this episode of Cheap Family Travel ( Nick, Regan, Maggie & Kate visited the city of New Orleans, Louisiana. We camped across the Mississippi River in Bayou Segnette State Park and took the free ferry back and forth across the river. While in the city, we visited Jackson Square, listened to jazz music at Preservation Hall, sampled beignets at Cafe du Monde, and tried the local gumbo and jambalaya. We loved people watching on Bourbon Street, listening to music everywhere, visiting Mannings Sports Bar and walking through Champions Square at the Superdome. We took a ride down the Mississippi River aboard the Creole Queen to the Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and the historic Chalmette Battlefield. Next we saw alligators on the Jean Lafitte Swamp Tours and wandered the boardwalks at the Jean Lafitte Barataria Preserve. We loved the gators, the food, the shops and the people. New Orleans is the Big Easy and we loved it.

New Orleans to launch new paddlewheel riverboat
(2 Jan 2019) FOR CLEAN VERSION SEE STORY NUMBER: apus109679
ONE OF THE BEST WAYS TO EXPERIENCE OLD NEW ORLEANS AND THE MIGHTY MISSISSIPPI – A JAZZ CRUISE ABOARD AN OLD-FASHIONED PADDLEWHEEL RIVERBOAT.
AND LAUNCHING THIS MONTH – THE FIRST NEW RIVERBOAT TO SURFACE SINCE HURRICANE KATRINA COLLAPSED THE CITY'S TOURISM INDUSTRY MORE THAN A DECADE AGO.
THE NEW ORLEANS STEAMBOAT COMPANY MANAGED TO KEEP AFLOAT THE NATCHEZ – ONE OF THE NATION'S LAST COMMERCIALLY-OPERATED PADDLEWHEEL STEAMBOATS.
SOUNDBITE (English) Matthew Dow, Project Manager, New Orleans Steamboat Company:
At one point in time, there were thousands going up and down the rivers and the lakes of this wonderful country here. So, you know there's only six, and we've got one of them, so we love showcasing that engine room.
THE NEW VESSEL – CALLED THE CITY OF NEW ORLEANS – WON'T BE STEAM-POWERED BUT WILL OFFER AN AUTHENTIC PADDLEWHEEL EXPERIENCE.
SOUNDBITE (English) Matthew Dow, Project Manager, New Orleans Steamboat Company:
At the back of the second deck, there's a little walk-around where people can go out, and they can look down on the paddlewheel, and they can see it working.
TOURS WILL INCLUDE NARRATION ABOUT THE HISTORY OF THE CITY AND SIGHTS ALONG THE SHORELINE.
SOUNDBITE (ENGLISH) Cyndi Grunenberg, Houston, Texas resident:
It was a great trip, a little bit of history along the river and just a fun ride.
OFFICIALS SAY THEY DON'T EXPECT A SHORTAGE OF PASSENGERS. THE NUMBER OF VISITORS TO NEW ORLEANS HAS SURPASSED PRE-KATRINA LEVELS IN RECENT YEARS, AND THE RIVERBOATS ARE A BIG DRAW.
SOUNDBITE (English) Stephen Perry, New Orleans & Company:
People don't come here only for food and music. What they like is other experiences. They love to do things like go on swamp tours. They love to go on the paddlewheelers. People stand in lines to go see them because that experience on a paddlewheeler is just one of the great added attractions of imagining yourself in a time gone by.
THE NEW VESSEL – ORIGINALLY A CASINO BOAT BUILT IN 1991 – ALREADY LOOKED THE PART OF A NEW ORLEANS RIVERBOAT. BUT THE INTERIOR HAD TO BE GUTTED TO MAKE WAY FOR A COMMERCIAL GALLEY, SEATING FOR HUNDREDS OF BRUNCH AND DINNER GUESTS, LIVE BANDS AND DANCING.
THE BOAT IS EXPECTED TO BE READY FOR TOURS BY JANUARY TWENTY-FIRST.
AND IN ANOTHER YEAR, OVERNIGHT RIVER CRUISES MAY BE BACK IN NEW ORLEANS WITH THE RETURN OF THE DELTA QUEEN, THE NATION'S LAST AUTHENTIC OVERNIGHT STEAMBOAT.
AFTER REPAIRS, IT'S EXPECTED TO RETURN TO SERVICE IN 2020.

Another video Mississippi steamboat, part 2
Steamboats played a major role in the 19th-century development of the Mississippi River and its tributaries by allowing the practical large-scale transport of passengers and freight both up- and down-river. Using steam power, riverboats were developed during that time which could navigate in shallow waters as well as upriver against strong currents. After the development of railroads passenger traffic gradually switched to this faster form of transportation, but steamboats continued to serve Mississippi River commerce into the early 20th Century.

Short flight over the Mississippi River in Arabi, Louisiana. I was really just testing the lighting capabilities of my new Mavic Pro when the Natchez & Creole Queen happened to stroll by. Its only the second day I have had it so don't be to critical. This is straight from the SD card with no tweak to lighting.

Dukes Jazz Band on Nanchez Riverboat on the Mississippi River, New Orleans
On our road trip to 5 States in the deep south of America, we finished off our trip in New Orleans so just had to take a trip on the only paddle-powered steamer left on the Mississippi, the Nanchez, for their jazz cruise. This is The Dukes, an amazing band playing New Orleans/Dixieland jazz from the 1920s onwards. The band, and the cruise, was absolutely excellent and well worth the money. Highly recommended if you go to NOLA.
