Mountain Nordic December 2010
Stunningly beautiful on the tree branches though it was, snow piling-up at 1 -- 3 inches per hour for most of a week kept living in the woods a challenge. First a large frozen snow-wad falling from the top branches of a tall Engelmann spruce onto the service line whipped our steel cable off the cabin masthead. After another night of storming, a pair of trees, only two of hundreds, inevitably toppling on the main line took out the power for our little row of cabins. When the power crew finally arrived from their many other tree-power line repairs, a tree fell beside them, so rightly they left us in the dark and ran for safety to wait out the storm. The storm instead continued though the power company crew did return, but only briefly as the two ski resorts, one on each side of us lost power too, stranding hundreds of skiers for nearly an hour and a half on the chair lifts. Meaning, another night in the dark for us. By Christmas Eve, dozens of trees lay across the Nordic track so we skied from tree to tree sawed away with our bow saw, while the power crews climbed poles and strung powerlines into the dark. Lights for Christmas Eve! -- Happy Holidays.

It was by chance that I discovered The Nordic Inn in Crested Butte, CO, and I'm so happy I did. I have never seen so many beautiful wildflowers in one place, and this quaint little Inn sits right in the center of them all. Whether it's summer or winter, this needs to be someplace that you visit, and once you watch the video you will see why.

He's made a life for himself that revolves around being in nature, gathering information (and fresh turns!) and sharing it with his fellow backcountry travelers. Pritchett lives with his wife Janae and their two kids in Crested Butte, CO.

Travelers Jannel and Kevin spent a few days getting shown around some of the best spots in Colorado by their friends. This is just a taste of what it’s like to be a temporary local in the Rockies: They Nordic ski Wolf Creek—an amazing alpine resort near Pagosa Springs with the deepest snow in Colorado. They soak in the Wiesbaden Hot Springs in Ouray and check out the vapor cave. They get in some snow laps on the Nordic trails in Aspen on fat bikes. And last but not least, they celebrate an amazing trip with drinks at Montanya Distillers in Crested Butte.
Any one of these places could easily be the high point of a winter trip to Snow's Perfect State. But Jannel and Kevin hit up all of them. Yes, we’re a bit jealous.
