Hike Econlockhatchee State Park Trail Guide Forest Recreation Parks Oviedo FL by Ben Brandao Guide
The Econlockhatchee River, known as the Econ to locals, is the second largest tributary of the St. John's River and runs 36 miles through Orange and Seminole Counties. It is designated as an Outstanding Florida Waterway, making it singled out for preservation by the state. The Econ is one of the last unspoiled rivers in Florida, and it is constantly at the center of controversy between environmentalists and developers. 19 miles of the river between SR 419 in Oviedo and the St. Johns River is designated as a state paddling trail for canoes and kayaks. There are numerous Indian Mounds along the the sandy banks and the river is home to diverse wildlife such as alligators, wild turkeys, deer, black bear, sand hill cranes, bald eagles, and a variety of wading birds.
Florida hiking trail at its best. Wild mountain bike terrain in FL State Park near Orlando in Central Florida. Fun thing to do other than Disney and it’s free. Just bring picnic and enjoy. The Pithlachascotee River, often called the Cotee or, tongue-in-cheek, Cootie River, is a blackwater river in Pasco County, Florida.
Originating near Crews Lake, the river flows for over twenty miles to the south and west, flowing through the Starkey Wilderness Park before turning north-west through downtown New Port Richey, entering the Gulf of Mexico at Miller's Bayou. A Florida State Canoe Trail runs along the river.
On a chart representing the west coast of Florida accompanying the annual report of the U.S. Coast Survey for 1851, the name is translated as Boat Building River. The whole word signifies the place where canoes were chopped or dug out. The Seminole used canoes dug out of cypress trunks. It is derived from the Creek pithlo (canoe), and chaskita (to chop out).[1]

Soberanes Fire
RIP Robert Reagan. The Soberanes Fire which burned 57 homes and killed contract firefighter dozer operator Robert Reagan cost about $236 million to suppress, making it the most expensive wildfire to fight in United States history as of 2016. The Soberanes was the result of an illegal campfire in Garrapata State Park. The fire burned 132,127 acres along the Big Sur Coast and the Los Padres National Forest, Ventana Wilderness and adjacent private and public land in Monterey County, California. At the fires peak, over 5000 personnel were assigned to the incident. The Soberanes Fire is the 18th of the top 20 largest California wildfires in terms of acres burned.
Kayak Adventure James E Grey Preserve S01-E06 || Explore Florida
This park is nice, we had a fabulous time, a lot to do for most everyone. Our camera missing up so there is missing footage, but there is a playground for the kids and a great fishing pier.
What we loved the most about this park were the boardwalks through what looked likes jungle. When walking the boardwalk you may come across love rocks, if you have another love rock you can replace that one with yours. We thought that was really neat and offers something special for our youth to do or the young at heart.
We did not see too much wildlife while there, but have been told and seen pictures of the evidence. While we have seen a lot of wildlife ourselves in other places around Florida, no luck here but we are sure this will change the more we Explore Florida.

Love Found At James E. Grey Preserve
James E. Grey Preserve is a New Port Richey city park that preserves 80 acres along the Pithlachascotee River. The park is completely surrounded by an urbanized area - making it a special treat for local residents who want to experience natural surroundings. A variety of recreational facilities are available, including a picnic area, kayak launch, boardwalk, and easy hiking trails.
The Pithlachascotee River, known by locals as the Cotee River, is a blackwater stream with headwaters at Crews Lake that flows through the Starkey Wilderness Preserve, past the Grey Preserve, and through downtown New Port Richey, before flowing into the Gulf of Mexico. The river is navigable by kayak or canoe up to a point about a half mile upstream from Grey Preserve. Its meandering course along the southern boundary of the preserve is a beautiful stretch to paddle or hike along and is a highlight of this park.
Entrance to the park is off Plathe Road just west of Little Road. Gates are open from sun up until sun down each day. The gravel entrance road into the park winds past the kayak launch area and continues to a large parking area near the picnic shelters and playground. There are four covered picnic shelters and a large event pavilion available for use by the public. Restroom facilities are located in the picnic area.
There are two miles of nature trails winding throughout the preserve, including a loop trail that circumnavigates an isolated bayou. A half-mile long ADA accessible boardwalk extends amidst the floodplain of the river and ends at an overlook of the Cotee River. This is a popular spot for fishing or an occasional glimpse of a dolphin or manatee.

Trail Access Restricted | Closed Down & Made Illegal By The USFS
Nearly everywhere I venture out to these days, here in Northern Utah, I'm bombarded with trail closures and Illegal Trail signs.
This short clip is just the tip of the iceberg that gets me fired up when it comes to access to MY public lands, forests, and mountains.
I think I'll make a short series highlighting just how little of free access we have to our natural resources here in Northern Utah.
I'd like to year your comments.

Crow Peak Fire Update June 30, 2016
The Crow Peak fire began June 24th after a lightning strike near Crow Peak in western South Dakota. The wildfire, burning in the Black Hills National Forest is now about 1,500 acres.
visit for more video.
Crow peak fire update
I’m Bryan Lessly from Black Hills Channel with this update on the Crow Peak Fire for June 30, 2016….
A quick overview… The fire is approximately 1,350 acres in size… It is about 8% contained… Progress is being made… There are about 512 firefighters on scene from a wide area and it’s nice to see the signs around town in Spearfish thanking the firefighters and messaging them with prayers and good thoughts…
The good news is no structures have been lost… According to the latest incident report patrol and mop-up around structures on Crow Peak Bench and Crow Creek road are on-going… Aircraft are being used to distribute fire suppressant and you’ve no doubt seen them overhead if you’ve been west of town… Helicopters are also being used in the effort and have dropped more than 150,000 gallons of water on the fire…
The main operation being planned now is the firing operations… If you’ve noticed an increase in smoke to the south of Crow peak it may look at first like a separate fire… This is called a firing operations or building a backing fire… Fire fighters move from DP (or drop point_) to drop point and in essence fight fire with fire—creating a boundary within which the fire is contained until it burns out…
I have a video here from fire information offer Cory Wall- he’s with the Washington State interagency Incident Management team and in this interview on a different fire, he explains the process of building a backing fire, or – what firefighters call – firing operations… Cory explains how firing operations or burnouts consume fuels in the path of a wildfire in order to slow, knock down or contain a rapidly spreading fire.
(SB)
Couple of things to keep in mind- temporary area closures are in effect and must be observed to allow fire fighters and their equipment to move swiftly into the needed areas…
The fire was caused by a lightning strike on Friday June 24th at around 6:15pm- in the Beaver Ridge region near Crow Peak… So don’t be alarmed with the added smoke, it’s a necessary part of battling the fire…
I’m Bryan Lessly from Black hills channel and this has been our update on the Crow Peak fire…
