The Disappearing Spoon: True Tales of Madness, Love, and World History from the Periodic Table
Sam Kean, Author
Why did Gandhi hate iodine (I, 53)? Why did the Japanese kill Godzilla with missiles made of cadmium (Cd, 48)? How did radium (Ra, 88) nearly ruin Marie Curie's reputation? And why did tellurium (Te, 52) lead to the most bizarre gold rush in history? The periodic table is one of our crowning scientific achievements, but it's also a treasure trove of passion, adventure, betrayal, and obsession. The fascinating tales in Sam Kean's The Disappearing Spoon follow carbon, neon, silicon, gold, and every single element on the table as they play out their parts in human history, finance, mythology, conflict, the arts, medicine, and the lives of the (frequently) mad scientists who discovered them. In weaving this tale of the Periodic Table, Sam Kean fuses science with the classic lore of invention, investigation, discovery, and alchemy, from the Big Bang through the end of time.

Jalousie, is a tango written by Danish composer Jacob Gade in 1925. Its full title is Jalousie 'Tango Tzigane' (Jealousy 'Gypsy Tango' ) and it soon became popular around the world and is today a classic in the modern songbook.
Music
The work consists of two themes – the first “a temperamental theme in D minor”, followed by a “lyrical section in D major”, both with a typical tango rhythm.
Although it became Gade’s most popular and successful work, he wrote successor tangos, such as the 'Romanesca, Tango' in 1933.
Composition
The composer claimed that the mood of the piece had been inspired by his reading a sensational news report of a crime of passion, and 'jealousy' became fixed in his mind.
Gade was principal conductor of the 24-piece orchestra of the important Palads Cinema in Copenhagen at the time he composed the piece. He wrote it at Tibirke Mølle, north Zealand, where he had a holiday home, as part of the musical accompaniment for the Danish premiere of the silent film Don Q, Son of Zorro.
It was performed under Gade's baton on the opening night, 14 September 1925.
Publication and performance history
The music was published in 1925 by Gade and Warny in Denmark, then the following year in New York and Paris.
Radio broadcasts and its use in 1930s films spread its popularity. The first recording was made in 1935 by the Boston Pops Orchestra, conducted by Arthur Fiedler, on the Victor label.
Many others followed, often in highly different arrangements.
Vera Bloom later wrote English lyrics, the song being re-titled with voice as the simple English translation Jealousy. It too proved popular.
The royalties from the performances of the work allowed Gade to found a charity to help young Danish musicians, called Jacob Gade's Legat.
Recordings
As Jalousie the song was released on a single in 1951 by Frankie Laine with Paul Weston & his Orchestra (Columbia Records catalog number 4-39585).
A cover-version with amended English lyrics by Billy Fury reached No.2 on the UK singles chart in 1961.
In addition to Bloom's, lyrics in many languages have been fitted to the composition. An English-language version by Billy Fury reached No.2 on the UK Singles Chart in 1961, giving Fury his biggest UK hit single.
In film
With and without vocals the piece by its various names has been used in numerous films, including:
Don Q, Son of Zorro (1925), starring Douglas Fairbanks
Anchors Aweigh (1945), a classic Gene Kelly, Frank Sinatra musical
Conflict (1945), a Humphrey Bogart mystery
Painting the Clouds with Sunshine (1951)
Silent Movie (1976), a Mel Brooks satire
Death on the Nile (1978), an Agatha Christie mystery
Brusten Himmel (Swedish film) (1982)

Handlung & Story vom Film Liebes Spiel

Northwest - Official UK trailer
Eighteen-year-old Casper (Gustav Dyekjær Giese), who lives in the infamous Nordvest suburb of Copenhagen with his mother, brother Andy and sister Freya, is a talented housebreaker who makes ends meet committing burglaries for neighbourhood boss Jamal. When a rival gangster, Bjorn, makes Caspar an offer of more lucrative terms and, perhaps, the promise of advancement through the ranks of his very white Danish family , the enraged Jamal is not prepared to tolerate defection; things violently escalate, placing the teenager and his family at the centre of a toxic conflict. What could be a predictable genre tale is elevated far above the ordinary by director Noer s fresh script and restrained approach, and by Gustav Dyekjær Giese s natural and powerful performance. His remarkable stillness only serves to intensify Casper s inner turmoil.

Allende's books, all written in her native Spanish, have been translated into more than 30 languages and have sold over 57 million copies. Listening is a more natural way of learning, when compared to reading. Written language only began at around 3200 BC, but spoken language has existed long ago.
Learning by listening is a great way to:
- increases imagination and understanding
- improves your listening skills
- improves your own spoken accent
- learn while on the move
- reduce eye strain
Now learn the vast amount of general knowledge available on Wikipedia through audio (audio article). You could even learn subconsciously by playing the audio while you are sleeping! SUMMARY
=======
Søren Aabye Kierkegaard ( SORR-ən KEER-kə-gard; Danish: [sɶːɐn ˈkiɐ̯ɡəɡɒːˀ] (listen); 5 May 1813 – 11 November 1855) was a Danish philosopher, theologian, poet, social critic and religious author who is widely considered to be the first existentialist philosopher. He wrote critical texts on organized religion, Christendom, morality, ethics, psychology, and the philosophy of religion, displaying a fondness for metaphor, irony and parables. Much of his philosophical work deals with the issues of how one lives as a single individual, giving priority to concrete human reality over abstract thinking and highlighting the importance of personal choice and commitment. He was against literary critics who defined idealist intellectuals and philosophers of his time, and thought that Swedenborg, Hegel, Fichte, Schelling, Schlegel and Hans Christian Andersen were all understood far too quickly by scholars.Kierkegaard's theological work focuses on Christian ethics, the institution of the Church, the differences between purely objective proofs of Christianity, the infinite qualitative distinction between man and God, and the individual's subjective relationship to the God-Man Jesus the Christ, which came through faith. Much of his work deals with Christian love. He was extremely critical of the practice of Christianity as a state religion, primarily that of the Church of Denmark. His psychological work explored the emotions and feelings of individuals when faced with life choices.Kierkegaard's early work was written under the various pseudonyms that he used to present distinctive viewpoints and to interact with each other in complex dialogue. He explored particularly complex problems from different viewpoints, each under a different pseudonym. He wrote many Upbuilding Discourses under his own name and dedicated them to the single individual who might want to discover the meaning of his works. Notably, he wrote: Science and scholarship want to teach that becoming objective is the way. Christianity teaches that the way is to become subjective, to become a subject. While scientists can learn about the world by observation, Kierkegaard emphatically denied that observation could reveal the inner workings of the world of the spirit. Some of Kierkegaard's key ideas include the concept of subjective and objective truths, the knight of faith, the recollection and repetition dichotomy, angst, the infinite qualitative distinction, faith as a passion, and the three stages on life's way. Kierkegaard wrote in Danish and the reception of his work was initially limited to Scandinavia, but by the turn of the 20th century his writings were translated into French, German, and other major European languages. By the mid-20th century, his thought exerted a substantial influence on philosophy, theology, and Western culture.
