President Obama At P Tech In Crown Heights

For the first time in several years, a sitting U.S. president visited Brooklyn. President Barack Obama's trip to the city's largest borough on Friday was to deliver what the White House called a major policy speech. It was about the future of the U.S. economy as told through the story of one very unique Crown Heights school.

P-TECH educates students from Grades 9 to 14, rather than to Grade 12. During those six years, students take college courses with professors from the City University of New York's College of Technology. The professors come to the P-TECH campus to teach. Students are also given paid summer internships at IBM which, along with the City University of New York (CUNY), are partners with the school.

P-TECH is proof of what we can do, the president said about the school's classroom-to-work curriculum.

Obama pointed out that Brooklyn had become well known historically as a place where strivers, especially immigrants, could find solid industrial or service sector jobs, whether or not they'd been well educated.

Those days are over, and are not coming back, President Obama said to an auditorium full of eager, boistrous high schoolers, as well as prominent elected officials from Sen. Chuck Schumer, to the entire New York City congressional delegation to Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Democratic mayoral nominee Bill de Blasio. However, said the president, the future strength of the U.S. economy features programs like P-TECH's long-range arc to the middle class.

Staten Island was first inhabited by the prehistoric Clovis Culture 14,000 years ago. By the time of European discovery, in 1520, the Native American Lenape people inhabited the lands. The Dutch settled here in 1609 and in 1729 the English setup Richmond Town here as the island's capitol. During the American Revolution, Staten Islanders were staunchly in favor of the crown and more than 1400 ships docked here as they prepared to attack. In 1898, Staten Island officially became part of New York City.

Staten Island's north shore is the most urban part of the island and includes historic neighborhoods, like St. George, Tompkinsville, Clifton and Stapleton. Definitely check out the St. Paul's Avenue-Stapleton Heights Historic District, for amazing Victorian houses.

The east shore is home to the 2.5-mile F.D.R. Boardwalk, which is the fourth-longest boardwalk in the world. It contains numerous parks and monuments to the veterans of the World Wars, Korean War and Vietnam War. This part of the island contains some of the most beautiful park landscapes.

The island's south shore is home to the 17th-century Dutch and French Huguenot settlements from the 1960s. You can still find iconic sites throughout these neighborhoods and some of the best natural views New York City has to offer.

The West Shore is the least populated and most industrial part of the island. It contains the legendary Boat Graveyard, where more than 100 wood and metal boats from three centuries have their final resting place. This is one of NYC's most industrious areas.

Staten Island is an incredible place. It's a rural safe-haven in America's largest city and a reminder of where we've been and where we're going. It's most definitely worth a visit!

- - It's a new dawn. It's a new day.
As of this past week, I'm back in the United States. First stop: Brooklyn. What this next phase will bring may be as unknown as what the coming day may bring. Certain is always that the sun will rise every day. Certain to me is also that I have people I love and who love me - living in many different places. I am so grateful for all of you who have walked with me and stood with me - especially during this last year of living in Berlin.

So I would like to dedicate this video to my family and friends, most of whom I miss right now and some of whom I finally get to see again now that I'm in NYC and others I will see very soon. This also includes my Berlin-Brooklyn friends Mike and Cassis, the later is the composer and singer of the lovely song in the video: Being There - performed by Cassis & The Sympathies.

The sunrise I photographed on Ginger's rooftop in Bedford-Stuyvesant. Thank you, Ginger, for letting me stay in your lovely apartment. And thank you, Erica and Van, for letting me stay in your vast Crown Heights mansion during the preceding days.

Weeksville is a neighborhood founded by African American freedmen and women in what is now Brooklyn, New York, United States, part of the present-day neighborhood of Crown Heights. Weeksville was named after James Weeks, a stevedore and formerly enslaved African-American from Virginia, who in 1838 (just 11 years after the abolition of slavery in New York State) bought a plot of land from Henry C. Thompson (another free African-American) in the Ninth Ward of central Brooklyn.
