Virtual Hike: Crystal Forest Trail in Petrified Forest National Park, Arizona
Petrified Forest National Park, located just east of Holbrook, Arizona in northeast Arizona, is special for many reasons. The park is home to some of the most stunning highlights of the Painted Desert, a colorful stretch of badlands that run from the Grand Canyon through Petrified Forest. It's also home to some of the highest concentrations of complete dinosaur fossils found in the world. It's also home to the remains and petroglyphs of ancient Pueblo civilizations. And finally, it's home to its namesake, the Petrified Forest, a collection of petrified wood logs scattered across the terrain, that more closely resembles another planet than it does a forest.
Thanks to a cataclysmic event that took place 218-million years ago, (park geologists just recently narrowed this timeline down from 225-million years ago), this former swamp land that was located near the equator saw the fall of the dinosaurs as well as these giant trees. The swamp sediment quickly covered them and protected them from the elements, allowing the wood to petrify before it was able to decompose. The result is a thousands of petrified wood logs that have slowly started to appear as time, wind and rain have removed the sediment around them.
One of the best places in the park to see the result of hundred of millions of years is in the Crystal Forest. Located in the southern section of the park, this area is easily navigable by a paved loop trail that is wheelchair accessible.
This .75-mile loop trail begins in the Crystal Forest parking area. The easy trail winds past rolling grasslands and badlands. Named for the sparkling quartz crystals that can be found in the region's petrified logs, the trail offers guests one of the best chances to see the petrified wood up close. The formations are the result of periodic flooding and erosion that took place 218 million years ago, when sediment and ash were carried downstream, settling over fallen trees. Over time, groundwater dissolved silica from the volcanic ash into the porous bodies of the fallen trees, creating the petrified logs on display today.

Canon G7X Mark II: (it’s amazing and basically sees in the dark)
Canon G7X: (the original is almost as good, but less expensive)
Joby Gorillapod: (fantastic versatile bendy tripod – this is the slightly smaller “action” version that’s easier to travel with and comes with a mount for a camera and a gopro)
Macbook Air: (we edit everything on Final Cut Pro on a Macbook Air, which is light and easy to travel with)
External Hard Drive: (the videos are a little too big for the macbook air to handle, so I edit everything off an external hard drive)

Blue Mesa Trail @ Petrified Forest National Park, Arizona
You will be amazed by the almost deafening silence this spot provides, and you should be prepared to spend at least one hour in this area in order to take in the beauty of the colorful fossils. Before leaving Blue Mesa, make sure to look back upon your hike from the overlook that is accessible from the loop road, from here you can see the vastness of the area you just hiked.

Petrified Forest National Park: Agate House and Long Logs Trail
Petrified Forest National Park is a protected area in northeastern Arizona. Within the park are fossilized trees dating back hundreds of millions of years.
I visit the Long Logs trail and see some of the longest sections of petrified trees and also the Agate House, a reconstructed pueblo made out of the fossilized wood.
Petrified Forest, Arizona Road Trip 2015 in 3D
This is a part 2 of the Petrified Forest National Park in Arizona. In April 2015 we completed a quick road trip of the Park, stopping at a few locations to photograph the Petrified Tree trunks scattered all over the desert in the area.
Picking up just north of I-40 in the Painted Desert, we continued south to state highway 180 beyond the south Park Gate. WE did stop at the gift shop and had an opportunity to buy some souvenirs of local hand crafted art made from the Petrified Wood.
All the petrified wood in the park is protected so don't take souvenirs but outside the park the PW is all over the ground for the pickings.
This is a Park we will put on our list of places to return because there were so many stops we missed along the Loop Road. It really is a place you could spend a day or two to enjoy.
This was shot using two Sony HDR TD-10 stereo camcorders for the road and GPS views. The still 3D and field 3D video were shot with a Panasonic Z10000 3D camrcorder with a polarizer lens all hand held.

On our drive back from our big family reunion, we made a detour stop to check out Petrified National Forest with big crew of cousins. Junior Ranger badges, a few simple hikes and some fantastic views for this short visit.

Catalina State Park | Our Favorite Place We've Stayed!
On October 5th, we headed to Catalina State Park in Oro Valley, Arizona for a two-week stay. Because we did not have full hook-ups, we were prepared for an opportunity to stretch ourselves as campers. But, this park ended up being more like a resort! Seriously, they even had wifi! The park is located at the base of the beautiful Catalina Mountains just north of Tucson. And, even better, the entrance to the park is just across the street from a shopping area. :)
