The Crystal Palace National Sports Centre. London 2015
Filmed by sky-net.co.uk Aerial Films and Stills
The National Sports Centre at Crystal Palace in south London, England is a large sports centre and athletics stadium. It was opened in 1964 in Crystal Palace Park, close to the site of the former Crystal Palace Exhibition building, and is on the same site as the former FA Cup Final venue which was used here between 1895 and 1914. The ground currently plays home to Kent Invicta Football League side AC London for their maiden season.
It was one of the five National Sports Centres, run on behalf of Sport England, but responsibility was transferred to the London Development Agency (now GLA Land and Property) and is managed by Greenwich Leisure Limited, under their Better brand logo.
The sports centre building was designed by the LCC Architects Department under Sir Leslie Martin between 1953–54 and is a Grade II* listed building.[1] It has a particularly interesting interior: there is a central concourse with a complex and delicate exposed concrete frame supporting the roof, which has a folded teak lining, and to one side a series of pools, including a 50m competition pool, and a diving pool with a dramatic reinforced concrete diving platform, and to the other side a smaller sports arena.
The athletics stadium has a capacity of 15,500, which can be increased to 24,000 with temporary seating. It hosts international athletics meetings.

Crystal Palace, Sydenham in London.
Several shots show the remains of the old Crystal Palace; statues, a Sphinx and the overgrown ruins. Several shots of the model prehistoric dinosaurs in the grounds of Crystal Palace Park. Pan across a panoramic photograph of the Crystal Palace just after it burnt to the ground in 1936.
Elsewhere in the grounds we see the new Crystal Palace National Recreation Centre; two men at a control board switch on the lights in the building and the new sports stadium. M/S of the accommodation block in the grounds where visiting athletes stay. A carved stone head sits on top of the gate to the grounds (not sure if he is someone significant).
Several shots in the sports centre show teenagers and children learning judo, volleyball, trampolining, football (the team is Leyton Orient FC). Outside, children are instructed on an outdoor ski-slope; a teacher in a snazzy red ski-suit and bobble hat goes tearing down the slope and falls over halfway down. Various shots of children in the indoor swimming pool being taught how to dive and swim; a few underwater shots of the children.

Crystal Palace is a District in South London, approximately 8 miles south of Charing Cross.
The Crystal Palace TV Transmitter is one of London’s most notable and visible landmarks. At 719 feet, it was once the tallest structure in London.
The area is named after the gigantic Crystal Palace Exhibition building whose foundations remain in the Crystal Palace Park. Originally built in Hyde Park in 1851 for the Great Exhibition, it was deconstructed and then reconstructed on the Penge Common in 1854. The building was so large it was said that it could accommodate 3 lots of St. Paul’s cathedrals. In 1936, it burnt to the ground after a small fire started in the ladies’ cloakroom. 89 fire engines and over 400 firemen could not control the blaze, the glow from which could be seen across 8 counties, and was witnessed by over a hundred thousand spectators, including Sir Winston Churchill.
Its roundabout is the meeting point of 5 London boroughs: Lewisham, Bromley, Southwark, Lambeth and Croydon.
At an elevation of 367 feet above sea level, it offers one of the finest views of the capital.
The grounds still contain the former National Sports Centre and stadium which has been home to countless international athletics events.
Remnants of the great Exhibition include these famous dinosaurs designed and sculpted by Benjamin Waterhouse Hawkins. They were the first of their kind in the World and predated Darwin’s 'Origin of the Species' by six years. They were restored in 2002 and made grade 1 listed in 2007.
The Crystal Palace Park Concert Platform, also known as the “Rusty Laptop” has been the venue for countless music events since the 1960s. Artists such as Pink Floyd, Bob Marley and the Beach Boys have all played there as well as numerous orchestras and independent amateur acts.
Crystal Palace has a lively music scene within its pubs, a small high Street with restaurants and access by rail and numerous bus routes.

NEW CENTRE FOR SPORT
The National Sports Centre at Crystal Palace cost 2¾ million pounds - but it's worth every penny. There is an eight lane racing pool with electronic timing. A new diving pool and a third pool for teaching beginners. Special observation panels make it easy for coaches to observe faults in a driver's under-water technique. It contains facilities for every conceivable event - including a fine cycle track. Unfortunately it has opened too late to have much affect on results at Tokyo, but its full worth should be proved by the time the next Olympics are held.

London: The future of Crystal Palace Athletics Stadium
This piece first broadcast on 14 Jun 2013. Televised on UK's regional television BBC1 London. Programme (Program) -- London News.
London First Snow of the Year 2017 Crystal Palace Park
Crystal Palace Park is a Victorian pleasure ground, used for cultural and sporting events. It is located in the south-east London suburb of Crystal Palace, which was in turn named after The Crystal Palace which had been moved from Hyde Park, London after the 1851 Great Exhibition and rebuilt with some modifications and enlargements to form the centrepiece of the pleasure ground, before being destroyed by fire in 1936. The park features full-scale models of dinosaurs in a landscape, a maze, lakes and a concert bowl.
This site contains the National Sports Centre which includes an athletics stadium. The athletics stadium was previously a football ground, which hosted the FA Cup Final from 1895 to 1914 as well as Crystal Palace F.C.'s matches from their formation in 1905 until the club was forced to relocate during the First World War. The London County Cricket Club also played matches at Crystal Palace Park Cricket Ground from 1900 to 1908, when they folded, and the cricket ground staged a number of other first-class cricket matches and had first been used by Kent County Cricket Club as a first-class venue in 1864.
The park is situated halfway along the Norwood Ridge at one of its highest points. This ridge offers views northward to central London, east to the Queen Elizabeth II Bridge and Greenwich, and southward to Croydon and the North Downs. The park remains a major London public park.
