Crystal Mill - Colorado HD
when you introduce technology with history you get phenomenal life moments captured in time
The Crystal Mill, or the Old Mill is an 1892 wooden powerhouse located on an outcrop above the Crystal River in Crystal, Colorado, United States. It is accessible from Marble Colorado via 4x4. Although called a mill, it is more correctly denoted as a compressor station, which used a water turbine to drive an air compressor. The compressed air was then used to power other machinery or tools. Today it stands as a Colorado icon, and is reputed to be the most photographed site in the state.[2]

The Crystal River is approximately 64 kilometres (40 miles) long and is a tributary of the Roaring Fork River in Colorado. The Crystal River drains a glacial valley, called the Valley of the Coal Miners, south of the town of Carbondale in southwestern Colorado. The river flows north past Marble, Colorado and then into Pitkin County past the small town of Redstone. It joins the Roaring Fork below Carbondale. State Highway 133 follows the river along much of its route north of Marble.

This video covers days 3 and 4 of an epic 6 day trip into Colorado in June 2016. On this morning we departed Creede, Colorado before dawn and flew for two hours to reach Crested Butte, Colorado. I stayed high and worked my way west, following the East River up and over Schofield Pass on my way to the beautiful grass strip at Marble. We landed and set up camp next to the Crystal River which flows through the valley.
Later in the day, we took a 1 hour sunset flight to play around the high mountains east of Marble and landed right at sunset. We wanted to stay here another day, but the winds were predicted to become strong later the next day. We opted to cross back to Crested Butte while we still could.
The next morning we had frost on our wings, and had to wait for the sun to come out and melt the wings off. If you don't know this already, do not ever take off with even the slightest hint of frost on your wings because you have no lift. I took off first, followed by the 3 other trikes in our party. We climbed up high and checked the beautiful show capped mountains between Marble and Crested Butte. The continuous adrenaline rush is almost to much to bear. I left the mountains and descended to the lazy meanders of the East River and followed them for a few miles in a relaxing flight before landing at Crested Butte.
Amazing flights, my best ever.

The Crystal River Valley, Colorado
This small river valley looks like the setting of a fairy tale in many aspects. Marble, the town which mines the purest calcium carbonate in the world, has changed little in thirty years with a history and people as colorful as the mountains and lakes around it. Crystal, to its south, isn't just a sleepy town: it's one that didn't wake up after 1915. I've attempted to capture the feeling one gets driving around the area. In this long segment you'll see waterfalls, lakes and old buildings in very unusual locations. It begins with footage I took on August 15th, just before the first rays of sun hit the valley and ends with the results of an adventurous rock scramble to a high mountain ledge to view a waterfall later that day. Jerry Douglas' cover of A Remark You Made (originally by Weather Report) as well as the Derek Trucks Band's So Close, So Far Away replaced the original sound.

The Roaring River is a 6.5-mile-long (10.5 km) tributary of the Fall River in Larimer County, Colorado. The river's source is Crystal Lake in the Mummy Range of Rocky Mountain National Park The river flows through Lawn Lake before a confluence with the Fall River in Horseshoe Park. The collapse of the Lawn Lake Dam in 1982 scoured the river's channel and deposited an alluvial fan of debris in Horseshoe Park.

Creation of the Yule marble, near Marble, Colorado.
The Yule marble is the state rock of Colorado. This animation shows a block diagram of the Paleozoic strata that were intruded by the Treasure Mountain Dome ~20 million years ago (i.e. an igneous body). The Mississippian Leadville Limestone was metamorphosed by the heat from the intrusion, and was transformed into marble. During the last 10 million years, the area was eroded, and the marble was exposed on the surface.

Taken June 2014, the Crystal Mill is located in middle Colorado. Not readily accessible since the road is really rough (maybe i'll post a video of the ride going there). You have to have a four-wheel drive car to get there through very perilous road.

Crystal Mill ADVENTURE and the Devils Punchbowl! BEAUTIFUL autumn colors!
Join along with me for my last adventure before winter hits. Here I drive to Marble, Colorado to go explore the ever famous Crystal Mill power station. This mill used to provide hydroelectric power to all the mining towns in the area back in its heyday, but now sits as an abandoned reminder to the past. Afterwords I continue on where most people turn around to go drive the Devils Punchbowl which is a narrow jeep trails, with off cambers and cliff faces. During which you are rewarded with beautiful views and picturesque waterfalls.
