The Lazy Man's Guide To CRYSTAL RIVER PRESERVE STATE PARK IN CRYSTAL RIVER FLORIDA
Driving Through Crystal River Preserve Florida State Park. Crystal River Preserve State Park is a remnant of the Florida coastline that has changed little since Europeans arrived over 500 years ago. The area is also known as the Nature Coast. The park preserves more than 27,000 acres of diverse natural communities such as scrub, pinewoods, hardwood forests, salt marshes and mangrove islands. Much of the property is still untouched, allowing visitors a glimpse at what this area of Florida looked like centuries ago. Given the natural community diversity, the preserve is an ideal location for birding and wildlife viewing. The preserve offers several miles of hiking and biking trails and two designated kayak launches.
Crystal River Preserve State Park is a Florida State Park, originally known as the Crystal River Buffer Preserve. The Preserve comprises 27,500 acres of salt marsh, tidal creeks, mangrove islands, hardwood forests, coastal scrub and pine flat woods.
The Crystal River Preserve is a remnant of the Florida coastline that has changed little since Europeans more than 500 years ago. It is located in a transitional area from a temperate and sub-tropical climate zone and contains plants and animals from both regions. The preserve follows 20 miles (30 km) of coastline along the Gulf of Mexico from Crystal River though Ozello to Homosassa. The Crystal River Archaeological State Park is located within the park boundary and managed by the Crystal River Preserve State Park.
The primary recreational opportunities at the Preserve are hiking, biking, birding, kayaking, fishing and nature observation. Crystal River, which provides refuge to wintering manatees, is located 3 miles southeast of the main park entrance.

Crystal River runs through the Crystal River Preserve State Park located on the west coast of central Florida. It is an important winter refuge for the West Indian Manatee who take advantage of the constant 72 degree Fahrenheit water that flows from the natural springs. On this trip, we paddled up the river to the Three Sisters Springs to check out the manatees and some other wildlife.
One notable feature of the area is the sprawling suburb that backs up to the springs and preserve, providing opportunities for people to have easy access to them. This means that humans and manatees often bump heads.
Please remember to always be respectful of the wildlife and give them plenty of space.
We are basically the paparazzi to them!

Springs like this are a trip for wildlife enthusiasts. The Three Sisters Springs in particular are within close proximity to a marine environment. While their waters pour out from the ground and are fresh, they are slow moving enough to allow brackish water species access to the spring head. In the video you can see mojarras and mangrove snapper gathering there alongside fresh water sunfishes.

Manatees @ Three Sisters Spring, Crystal River FL
This video shows the large number of manatees at Three Sisters Spring. An aerial survey that morning (Jan 19, 2011) showed 212 manatees here just at the entrance to the spring and inside the spring and a total of 453 manatees in the entire Crystal River National Wildlife Refuge. The reason for the high count is extremely cold water temperatures. Manatees start suffering deadly hypothermia in waters colder than 68 degrees. The spring water temperature is 72 degrees all the times.

Swimming with Wild Manatee at Crystal River National Wildlife Refuge
One of the most incredible experiences of my life... swimming in the wild with one of these majestic and endangered creatures. The water was murky so I apologize for the poor visibility, but if you watch the whole video you can get a taste of the incredible experience I had being up close and personal to one of these amazing animals! Since they are protected they are very strict about not harassing or harming them, but if they do bump into you it's okay to gently touch them without harming them and I did feel the soft manatee skin when they kept bumping into me. The water is not clear so I was looking down and suddenly the ground appeared to be moving but I realized it was a manatee right below me and then more and more came up to us! Sadly, you can see some white scars on their delicate skin from boats that don't follow the rules. Please slow down and watch out for the manatees in Florida... obey all laws and rules and give these creatures respect. Bottom line.. this experience was amazing!
