The ABANDONED Restaurant in Sussex that used to be a Train Station - Urban Exploring - Urbex - UK
Welcome to another video from Derelict in the UK.
Today we're exploring an ABANDONED Restaurant that used to be a train station. Here is some history..
In 1881 the second station at Polegate was opened in connection with the construction of a new westward facing line to Hailsham and the 1880 extension of the Cuckoo Line to Eridge, and the re-aligned branchline to Eastbourne which the present line follows today.
The second station had four through platforms. The East Coastway line through Polegate was electrified in 1935 bringing in faster more frequent services. In 1965 the Cuckoo line north of Hailsham was closed followed in 1968 by complete closure of the branch to Hailsham. On 6 January 1969 the spur line to Pevensey (Stone Cross Junction) was closed and the up line was lifted, leaving the down line open for departmental trains until 1974 when the line became a mile long engineers siding with access only from Stone Cross Junction, this was then lifted in August 1984. and once extensive goods sidings were gradually closed and removed.
Station platforms of the second station in March 1986
The station closed in 1986 when a newer station opened 440 yards west, although caused controversy when the subway under the station connecting the platforms was also closed as it offered a short cut for non rail travellers to cross from one side of the town to the other without walking towards the high street and using the level crossing. The level crossing Is the only means from crossing from one side of the town to the other.
The closed lines to Hailsham and Pevensey are still evident, the Hailsham branch now being a cycle path, the cuckoo trail, through to Heathfield. The trackbed to Pevensey is mostly intact with the A22 road cutting though the route.
The second station was a Restaurant, called The Old Polegate station, the restaurant area is upstairs above the original booking hall. The west bound platform is still in existence although cut back for passing trains.
The Restaurant ceased trading as of May 2016 and work has begun to demolish it and replace with flats and a Co-Operative Store.
We will be releasing regular uploads from today, every Saturday at 10AM, sorry this one is a touch late.

Cuckoo Trail by Bike (1 of 3) - Heathfield to Horam (double speed)
The former Cuckoo Line from Heathfield to Horam. After a brief look at the former railway tunnel, unfortunately now locked, we make our way to the Cuckoo Line, descending steadily to Horam Station, beyond which a housing estate briefly interrupts the route. This is the opening section of the eleven-mile route southward from Heathfield to Polegate.

Exploring the Disused Railway Tunnel at Argos Hill in East Sussex
Today I meet up with Dumpman, aka Chris Bedford, to seek out Argos Hill Tunnel, part of the original Cuckoo Line. The tunnel is now disused and abandoned. Join us as we scrabble down the banks of the cutting to reach this piece of industrial heritage.
Today, the Cuckoo Line remains a closed railway – a footpath and cycleway known as The Cuckoo Trail runs along much of the route from Polegate to Heathfield.
You can find out more about Dumpman and his films here:

Places to see in ( Heathfield - UK )
Places to see in ( Heathfield - UK )
Heathfield is a small, affluent market town in East Sussex, England. Heathfield lies near the junction of two main roads: the A267 between Tunbridge Wells and Eastbourne; and the A265 from Hawkhurst. It is almost equidistant from Tunbridge Wells and Eastbourne: approximately 16 mi (26 km).
Historically, Heathfield lay on an ancient trackway (The Ridgeway), connecting the South Downs with the Weald. Its market charter was granted in February 1316 during the reign of Edward II. The Wealden iron brought prosperity to the town during the 16th/17th centuries; the coming of the railway (the Cuckoo Line) in 1880 gave it another new lease of life. The latter was not a financial success and the branch line between Eridge and Polegate closed in 1968. The trackbed is now named the Cuckoo Trail, part of the National Cycle Network. The original village — Old Heathfield — is now only part of the town, which has expanded over time.
The parish church in Heathfield is dedicated to All Saints: an example of a Harmer terracotta decorated gravestone is in the churchyard. The town is the home of Heathfield Park Cricket Club, formed in 1878, and enjoying one of the most scenic positions of any cricket ground in Sussex.
The nearby mansion of Heathfield Park dates from the seventeenth century. In a corner of the estate stands a memorial named the Gibraltar Tower. To the north-east, on the edge of the parish, Braylsham Castle is a modern house begun in 1993, built in imitation of a moated medieval manor house, complete with working drawbridge. Approximately one mile from the town is the Heathfield transmitting station, a 135 m high mast which broadcasts TV and radio signals to East and West Sussex, as well as parts of south Kent.
The town holds an annual fair named the Heffle Cuckoo Fair each April, the annual Heathfield show takes place each May in the summer. Heathfield is the home of Heathfield Community College and several primary schools. Opposite the college is a leisure centre. There is an Anglo/French market called Le Marché held every year on the August Bank Holiday and a fair that visits during the Summer. There is a fairly large football field and beside it a little playground. At Cross-in-Hand there is a rugby club for adults and children.
( Heathfield - UK ) is well know as a tourist destination because of the variety of places you can enjoy while you are visiting Heathfield . Through a series of videos we will try to show you recommended places to visit in Heathfield - UK
