Medieval China: Crash Course History of Science #8
Like Egypt, Sumer, and Mesoamerica, ancient China represents a hydraulic civilization—one that maintained its population by diverting rivers to aid in irrigation—and one that developed writing thousands of years ago. Today, we’re going to focus on the time of the Northern and Southern Song Dynasties, a time of great technical innovation. But, before we get to the Song, let’s take a tour through the ages and explore key elements of Chinese scientific culture.

Key Concepts in Chinese Thought and Culture
Beijing the Center of a Linguistic Revolution (Key Concepts in Chinese Thought and Culture)
A revolution is underway in China, and it is unstoppable. While The New York Times, The Economist, BBC, CNN, and all Western media and scholarship still practice Orwellian rules of writing and avoid Chinese words in their China reports, a new generation of writers, scholars, and artists are not having any of it:
Whether it is shengren or junzi, baijiu or baozi, dama or taizidang –Chinese words are fashionable. There are tens of thousands of “untranslatable” Chinese key concepts out there that deserve their proper place in world history. The usual suspects like kungfu, qi, and wushu aren’t just enough for young writers. They want more.
In the past, when black people were not allowed to ride public buses in the United States, and when Asian words were shunned and censored in all writings, Western men (and few women) of letters had to improvise and “invent” translations for foreign ideas. Hence ruxue became “Confucianism”, following the Western understanding of religion: locate a messiah figure (Kong Zi) and add –ism.
Today, this form of reckless language segregation and intellectual property theft is crumbling. If we can liberate the races, we can also free their cultures. We must protect their names, words, and concepts.
China is not alone. In Japan, Shinzo Abe is promoting ‘Cool Japan’, boosting Japanese culture from genki to kawaii. Likewise, India’s Narendra Modi is supporting a revival of Hindu/Sanskrit terms around the globe.
Now Xi Jinping has discovered the secret to China’s soft power: It is Zhongguo Meng, not “Chinese Dream”. We in Beijing are at the center of this small but significant change of how people will write in the future. We are entering the post-translational society.

CHINA: BEIJING: US CULTURE POPULAR WITH YOUNG PEOPLE
Mandarin/Nat
On Sunday the Chinese president Jiang Zemin travels to the United States for what will be only the second visit in twenty years by a Chinese leader.
Relations between the two countries are often strained, even though China has embarked upon widespread economic reform over the last decade.
It's hoped the groundbreaking visit will help to solve some of the tensions between the two countries.
But in China itself, Uncle Sam's culture is already making itself felt.
The young are increasingly applying to study in the States.
And many of the icons of American culture are establishing themselves.
SOUNDBITE: (Mandarin)
If people accept my book, it doesn't mean that they will boycott the American culture, such as the Chicago Bulls basketball team, Michael Jackson's song or Elvis Presley's music after they read my book. That is two different things. According to a recent survey,
Chinese young people worship and hate the United States of America at the same time. This might looks contradictory but it simply reflects the mentality of Young Chinese intellectual in these changing times.

SOUNDBITE: (Mandarin)
In my mind, America is more open that China, American people are more modern, practical and efficient.

SOUNDBITE: (Mandarin)
I have a very good impression of the United States. I would be more than happy to have the chance to go there. The problem is that I don't have the opportunity.
SUPER CAPTION: Vox pop
SOUNDBITE: (Mandarin)
The reason I apply to go to America is that I want to get in touch with the culture. As you know, there are many differences between Western and Oriental cultures. Centuries ago, Oriental culture was flourishing and glorious, now it had fallen and western countries are much ahead of us. Why ? I think, the reason is contained inside the culture itself.

Singapore PM welcomed by counterpart in Beijing
(8 Apr 2018) Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong met Chinese Premier Li Keqiang in Beijing on Sunday to discuss economic and cultural cooperation.
The two leaders oversaw the signing of two memorandums of understanding to develop working business relationships on Singaporean participation in China's Belt and Road infrastructure initiative, as well as cultural exchanges.
Lee is leading a delegation of high-level Singaporean government officials on the first day of a five-day visit to China.
He plans to appear this week at the Boao Forum for Asia, a Chinese-sponsored annual gathering for political and economic elites on tropical Hainan island.
The visit comes as China and the U.S. exchange tariff threats in what is already shaping up to be the biggest trade battle for more than a half century.
Earlier on Sunday, Singaporean Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan met with his counterpart Wang Yi and exchanged remarks about rising trade tensions in a conference room at the Chinese Foreign Ministry.

As Spring Festival draws closer, all Wang Mingjie can think about is getting back to his family. He dreams of kissing his two young children and handing them their favorite toys. Yet without money, he knows he can't make the dream a reality. Wang is part of China's 290-million-strong rural labor force and his story may be revealing. An annual survey by Beijing authorities shows that China's migrant workers are less inclined to travel long distances for work in big cities.
