Seoul Station - This hub of transportation sees millions of travelers each and every day, but before this modern building opened to accommodate Korea's high-speed trains, there was another gateway to the city.
The original Seoul Station was completed in 1925 and designed by the Japanese during the occupation period. For more than 80 years, it greeted visitors to Seoul before it went dormant.
After a two-year restoration project, the facilities have re-opened and serve a new function.

Hean Kim - Live at the Culture Station Seoul 284 (문화역서울284), Seoul, South Korea
Live at the Museum is a series of films in which buskers and other artists perform without permission in front of major museums around the world. The democracy of art and the use of public space are key components of this work. It is an indefinitely ongoing series and while each work stands on its own, they are interconnected through a shared distance to global cultural agendas and a quiet beauty emanating from the covert act of street performance. Live at the Museum is an investigation into the collective and institutional affirmation given to culture, while also functioning as a digital archive to cache the contribution of its participants.

The main hall (Jun gang Hall) and lobby is found on the 1st floor, there is a dome and 12 stone pillars which is a replica of the original station. On the ceiling of the train station, there is a stained glass depicting Korean traditional dancing called “Kang Kang Su Won Le. What use to be a ticket office and waiting room for passengers to board the train is now being used as an exhibition hall, performances, events and cafes.
The 2nd floor is the Recovery Exhibition which was once used as a barber shop and restroom. This was also rebuilt to replicate the original station. This floor serves as a venue of cultural performances, academic seminars, business meetings and more.

□ Present Modern Sensibility to Gyeongseong Station, Seoul
Korea’s railroad history began with the Gyeongin Line. In 1900, the Gyeongin Line was extended to Namdaemun Station in Seoul, and the woodwork history at that time was called Namdaemun Station, which was the beginning of Gyeongseong Station and the beginning of history.
During the three-year construction period from 1922 to 1925, Renaissance architecture was newly built. The new history of the South Manchuria Railways Company has changed its name to Gyeongseong station.
With significant scale of the Gyongseong station, the European-style exotic appearance of red bricks, granite floors, artificial walls, and the Betula schmidtii Regel floor made headlines. In particular, the first Luncheon bar “Grill” on the second floor became so popular that it called the Luncheon bar itself a drawing.
During the three-year construction period from 1922 to 1925, Renaissance architecture was newly built. The new history of the South Manchuria Railways Company has changed its name to Gyeongseong station.
As a platform to create and interact with Culture · Art, various programs such as exhibitions, performances, and workshops are held. In 1900, it changed from Namdaemun Station to Gyeongseong Station and Seoul Station to become Culture Station Seoul 284. Meet 100 years of history against time.

■Seoullo 7017 (서울로7017)
In the 1970s, an elevated road was built to connect the eastern and western sides around Seoul Station. However, the road was closed to road traffic due to safety issues. After this, rather than tearing down the existing structure, the road was transformed into Seoullo 7017, a new pedestrian walking experience.
Seoullo 7017 gets its name from its years of new life, from being a traffic road in the 70s to a sky garden in 2017. The 17 also has a deeper meaning, with Seoullo 7017 being divided into 17 unique sections, and the road being located 17 meters above the ground.
There are a variety of facilities along Seoullo 7017, including an information center, cafes, gardens, and stages. Seoullo 7017 itself is open all day, every day for visitors to enjoy at their leisure. If you would like a guided tour, be sure to sign up for the guided walking tour through the official Visit Seoul website.

Art exhibition at former Seoul Station explores history of coffee in Korea
모던보이도 사랑한 커피...'커피사회' 대한민국
These days in Korea, coffee is served in shops on just about every street and alley.
It's a fixture of mornings, lunchtime and evenings.
But that wasn't always the case.
It's only been a little over a hundred years since the drink was introduced here.
Now, there's an exhibition at the old Seoul Station downtown... about the history of Korea's coffee culture.
Park Se-young reports.
Historical records show the first coffee in Korea was served to King Gojong in 1895 when he was taking refuge at the Russian Legation.
He enjoyed having coffee and snacks at Jeonggwanheon Pavilion in Deoksugung Palace.
Regular Koreans could first taste coffee from the 1920s at the country's first western restaurant inside the old Seoul Station, …and people today have come to that same spot to explore how coffee culture began to spread in Korea.
The exhibition Winter Coffee Club reflects on the changing history of coffee culture and how it has affected Korean society.
Yi Sang, a modern literature writer who went on to open his own coffee shop, or dabang, displayed his knowledge and interest in coffee through his illustrations.
After the Korean War, coffee was distributed along with relief items and began to establish its position in the country.
Locally-made instant coffee mixes took off in Korea in the 1970s, …and coffee vending machines and dabang coffee shops became commonplace.
Coffee today is not just food and has more meaning than as a commodity. The exhibition hopes to show how deeply coffee has become a part of our everyday life.
The exhibition of the story of coffee will run until February 21st at Culture Station Seoul 284.

Some info (wiki)
Seoul Station is a major railway station in Seoul, the capital of South Korea. The station is served by the Gyeongui–Jungang Line, Line 1, AREX & Line 4.
The former Seoul station, Namdaemun station, started operating in a 33 m2 (10 pyeong) wooden building in July 1900 with the extension of the Gyeongin Line north of the Han River. The Gyeongbu Line opened in 1905, and the Gyeongui Line opened in 1921 – both lines connecting to the station. The construction of the current Old Seoul Station began on June 1, 1922, and was finished on September 30, 1925. In 1923, the station reverted to the name Gyeongseong Station, when the name of the city of Seoul changed from Hanseong to Gyeongseong (Keijo in Japanese).
The station was renamed Seoul Station on November 1, 1947. The station was expanded throughout the post-Korean War era; the Southern Annex of Seoul station was completed on December 30, 1957, and the Western Annex was completed on February 14, 1969. In 1975, the Korea National Railroad's office moved from Seoul Station to the new West Annex Office. A raised walkway connecting the Seoul Station and the West Annex was completed on 1977, and Korea's first privately funded station was erected in 1988 in time for the Seoul Olympics. In 2004, a new terminal adjacent to the existing one was completed to coincide with the introduction of KTX high-speed rail service.
The Old Seoul station (Korean: 구서울역사; Hanja: 舊서울驛舍, literally meaning Old Seoul station building; 37.5559°N 126.9716°E), originally named Keijo (Gyeongseong) station and designed by Tsukamoto Yasushi of Tokyo Imperial University, was finished on November 1925. This red brick building, designed in an eclectic style, features a Byzantine-style central dome and a centralized and symmetrical layout. The floor of the Central Hall on the ground floor was covered with granite and the walls were covered with man-made stone. The wooden floor inside the building's VIP Lounge was covered with birch wood and a western style restaurant was located on the 2nd floor.
On September 25, 1981, the old station was designated as Historic Site 284. A restoration project of the old station began on September 2007 to transform the former Seoul Station, which had lost its functionality as a train station since the opening of the new KTX Station, into a premier national multidisciplinary cultural facility. On the same year, the management was transferred from the Cultural Heritage Administration to the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism. After the design for former Seoul Station's remodeling was developed in 2009, the remodeling construction began.
On August 9, 2011, the station was reopened as a culture complex with its original exterior, after a two-year restoration project by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the state-run Korea Craft and Design Foundation (KCDF). On April 2, 2012, Culture Seoul Station 284 was officially launched as a space for diverse artistic and cultural creation and exchange. The official name, which combines the station's historic, spatial, and urban symbolisms, was selected through a national open call. By combining the notion of a cultural space with the old Seoul Station's historic site number 284, the name aims to embody the concepts of preserving its appearance and value as a historic site while simultaneously cultivating the meaning of the station as a place of various cultural intersections. The restored station is a 9,202m2 building with two stories above ground and one story below ground level. The former station, before the renovation, has the main lobby, a waiting room, and a VIP room on the first floor, and a barber shop and restaurants on the second floor. Post-renovation, the first floor contains a venue for performances, exhibitions and events, and a multipurpose hall on the floor above.
