Winter Village at the Downtown Tampa Riverwalk
Come celebrate this holiday season in Downtown Tampa at Curtis Hixon Park. The park has transformed into a winter wonderland and is open for Christmas festivities.
Tampa Bay Lightning has put on a Christmas themed event called Winter Village and it is located along the Tampa River Walk across from the University of Tampa. The Winter Village will be available to the public now through the beginning of the new year, ending on January 6, 2019. The Winter Village is free and welcomes everyone of all ages.
At the Winter Village, people can do Christmas shopping, ice skate, and grab a drink or a bite to eat while walking around the area. Vendors from all across the Tampa Bay area have set up shop at the park, displaying their products for sale that can make Christmas gifts.
Local artists created jewelry, pillows, home-made soaps and lotions that are for sale at the event. Gifts for pets are also available too, such as pet toys and clothes in all shapes and sizes for furry friends.
The best way to support Tampa is to visit small businesses. Here are some shops you will find in the village. Black & Denim, The Modern Paws and Unlock Tampa Bay are a few stores that are promoting their business at the Curtis Hixon Park.
Along with the option to get some gift shopping done, park goers can enjoy outdoor ice skating, even in the warm state of Florida. An ice rink has been placed in the middle of the village and people of all ages are welcome to take the ice, with ice skate rentals available if you don’t own a pair of skates. Tickets for ice skating must be purchased, but the price includes the skate rental fee. Ice skating tickets do not have to be purchased in advanced. There is on-site staff at the entrance of the ice rink who can assist skaters.
As you’re walking around the Winter Village, make sure to stop at one of the many food and drink stops. Soup, grilled cheese, hamburgers and hotdogs are one of the few things to choose from. If that doesn’t sound good to you, grab a snack like a pretzel or popcorn or buy some hot chocolate to really get into the Christmas spirit. Check out places like Whatever Pops & Grilled Cheese, Kahwa Coffee Roasting and Mise Waterfront Bar if you’re in the mood for food or drinks.
Hours for this year’s Winter Village vary, with the event starting at 4 p.m. during the week, and on Saturdays at 10 a.m. and on Sunday at noon. The village will also be open on Christmas Eve from 10 a.m to 6 p.m. for any last-minute shopping and Christmas festivities.
Parking for the event is available and can be found in the nearest parking garage by Curtis Hixon Park, William F. Poe Parking Garage. This is located on the north side of the park. Dogs are also welcomed into the Winter Village, as long as they are kept on their leash.

Some wikipedia stuff:
Oh, Florida!: How America's Weirdest State Influences the Rest of the Country By Craig Pittman notes that, Tampa mobsters testified about payoffs to the sheriff, the town constable, the police chief, the state attorney, even Mayor Curtis Hixon. One told of driving his boss over to Hixon's house and waiting outside while the two men discussed business. (Hixon once told a police lieutenant who was his bagman that he didn't see anything wrong with taking payoffs of up to $100,000 as long as there's no greed or killings or no scandals.) In the end, only the sheriff got in trouble. For the others, it was as if the testimony evaporated into thin air the moment it was spoken. Not only did they face no legal consequences, but, as one historian pointed out, Hixon now has a lovely waterfront Park in downtown Tampa named for him. [2]
In 1947 Hixon presented movie star Mary Hatcher, who grew up in Tampa, with a golden key to the city in recognition of her playing the title role in Paramount's all-star revue Variety Girl. Hatcher returned to Tampa for a gala opening of the film at the Tampa Theatre and crowds turned out to honor her.
Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park is named for him, as was Curtis Hixon Hall before it was demolished in 1993.
Tampa Riverwalk
Tampa's Riverwalk project dates back to the 1970s, a time when much of the downtown waterfront consisted of aging warehouses and industrial facilities related to the nearby Port of Tampa. Tampa mayor Bill Poe conceived the idea of a park and walkway behind Curtis Hixon Hall, a civic center along the Hillsborough River that was one of the few public spaces in the area.[4] The city built a short stretch of boardwalk on the east side of the river behind the Hall, but a lack of funds to buy adjoining properties and subsequent mayors' disinterest in the project stalled development for decades.
In 2002, mayoral candidate Pam Iorio pledged to jumpstart the Riverwalk project if elected. She won, and construction soon began on two parks behind Amalie Arena along the southern portion of the planned Riverwalk.[5] As construction progressed, a $20 million fundraising campaign was launched in 2006 to pay for future phases, which received a boost when a redeveloped Curtis Hixon Park opened in 2010 near the location of the original portion of the Riverwalk, which was completely redesigned and reconstructed.[6] Bob Buckhorn, who succeeded Iorio as mayor, was also a strong advocate for the Riverwalk project and downtown redevelopment.[7] In 2014, a federal transportation grant was used to complete a $9.2 million boardwalk under the Kennedy Boulevard bridge, connecting all of the existing segments into one continuous path about two miles long. A further extension north past the Straz Center for the Performing Arts, under Interstate 275, and ending at Waterworks Park in the Tampa Heights neighborhood was completed in 2016, lengthening the Riverwalk to over two and a half miles.

Water Works Park- Tampa
The City took a blighted industrial lot and restored it to it's 1920's splendor. Contaminated soil was removed, landscaping was designed around the newly re-flowing Ulele Spring, and the park was connected to the River Walk along the lower Hillsborough River. There is a giant dump bucket and splash pad for the children.

South Tampa ???? One of Tampa's Most Popular Areas | MELANIE ❤️ TAMPA BAY
One of the most popular Tampa Bay areas is definitely South Tampa, so let's take a closer look to see if it's for you!
Generally when people are talking about South Tampa, they're referring to the peninsula that juts down into Tampa Bay with the northern boundary of South Tampa being State Road 60 (Kennedy Boulevard) and the southern boundary being MacDill Air Force Base.
So why do so many want to live in South Tampa?
LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION
South Tampa is close to two large commercial areas - the Westshore District near Tampa International Airport, and Downtown Tampa. That makes for a convenient commute. However, you would have pretty quick access to highways bringing you to other Tampa Bay areas including I-275 and the Lee Roy Selmon Expressway, originally known as the Southern Crosstown Expressway.
It's also close to fun places around Downtown Tampa like Amalie Arena, Curtis Hixon Park, The Florida Aquarium, Glazer Children's Museum, Straz Center for the Performing Arts, and Sparkman Wharf.
EATING, DRINKING & SHOPPING
Because South Tampa has been a popular areas for a long time, many local and chain businesses and restaurants have set up shop here. You don't have to go far to find an amazing restaurant, fun boutique, or grocery store.
Great spots for shopping include WestShore Plaza, International Plaza, and Hyde Park Village.
Howard Avenue is known for the famous Bern's Steak House and quite a few bars appealing to the younger crowd.
SCHOOL DISTRICT
If you've been looking online at listings, you probably see the phrase in the Plant High School District. Plant High School is consistently one of the highest rated in the area. Make sure you check the actual school zone for the house you're interested in purchasing.
The other high school in South Tampa is in the southern portion of the peninsula - Robinson High School.
*NOTE: School zones subject to change
NOT COOKIE CUTTER
Because the area has been built over the last century, every house looks different and there are plenty of examples where century-old bungalows sit next to brand new contemporary construction.
If you value privacy, South Tampa can be a hard place to find it with many smaller lot sizes. Unless you are backing up to the water, golf course, or a street changes are good that you'll have a neighbor backing up to your property.
NEIGHBORHOODS & HOUSING OPTIONS
Neighborhood boundaries in South Tampa can be hard to figure out, as many aren't labeled well other than a small sign.
You can see beautiful, historic bungalows in Hyde Park Village, lots of new construction in Swann Estates from builders developing existing lots where older homes used to stand. There are townhouses close to Howard Avenue, and you'll find some walkable neighborhoods in South Tampa.
If you want your kids to be able to walk to Plant High School, look at Palma Ceia, West Palma Ceia, or Virginia Park.
Like Downtown St. Pete, South Tampa has some of the highest price real estate in the area since demand is so high. If you want a waterfront property in South Tampa, be prepared to spend well over $1 million.
Other popular neighborhoods include Beach Park, Bayshore Beautiful, Ballast Point, Interbay, Westshore Yacht Club, Culbreath Isles, Sunset Park, Golfview, nearby Davis Islands and Harbour Island.
