In 1922, James Curwood built this replica of a Norman chateau along the banks of the Shiawassee River near his home in Owosso. Construction on the building began in 1922 and was completed in 1923. Curwood moved in and used one of the turrets as a writing studio. James Oliver Jim Curwood (June 12, 1878 – August 13, 1927) was an American action-adventure writer and conservationist. His books ranked among Publishers Weekly top-ten best sellers in the United States in the early 1920s. At least eighteen motion pictures have been based on or directly inspired by his novels and short stories. At the time of his death, he was the highest paid (per word) author in the world.

Curwood Castle, located in Curwood Castle Park,stands on the banks of the Shiawassee River. It served as the writing studio of James Oliver Curwood, one of America's foremost authors of adventure novels and an early advocate of environmental conservation. Set in Owosso, among one of the richest collections of historic homes and buildings in the Midwest, this replica of a Norman chateau was completed in 1923. The beautiful castle was used by Curwood until his death in 1927. It is now a museum and open to the public Tuesday-Sunday, 1-5pm. The castle is closed for the month of January. Admission is $5.00 per adult, 8 - 18 years old is $2.00 and under 8 years old is $1.00 per child.

A few days ago we drove up to Owosso to see the Curwood Castle. It looks from the outside and it is a great place to take photography, the inside of the Castle was actually a lot smaller than i expected, but it was still pretty cool.

The inaugural Open Streets Owosso route will encompass portions of the river trail located at Williams street between Adams and Pine Streets. Participants will have to opportunity to cross the Heritage Footbridge to visit Curwood Park containing Comstock Cabin, Curwood Castle, Woodard Paymaster Station, and Shiawassee Arts Center. From there the route continues on Jerome Street heading east towards Kiwanis Fields, crossing the Oakwood Ave bridge heading west on the Voight Loop Trail past the Steam Railroad Institute and heading north on Washington St through historic downtown Owosso. Sections of Mason, Exchange, Water, and Ball
Streets will be open for people to explore and engage in activities.
The Open Streets Owosso coalition is comprised of a diverse range of public, private and non-profit stakeholders, including: the City of Owosso, Steam Railroading Institute, Downtown Owosso Farmer's Market, Shiawassee Historical Commission, the Owosso Main Street Promotions Committee, Owosso Masonic Lodge 81, Shiawassee Arts Center, Owosso Main Street, and the Shiawassee County Chamber of Commerce.

The title says it all. We first spotted a single bald eagle, on Sunday, 8 February 2015. Then, the following morning, two appeared at the same location, out our back windows. Here's a very short video, as we saw them.

Owosso - Downtown River View & History
In this video you are looking north from downtown off the Main Street Bridge in Owosso, Michigan. The river is the Shiawassee River - one of the few rivers in the Northern Hemisphere that flows north. In the upper left is Curwood Castle, which was built during 1922 and 1923 by Owosso native and world-renowned author, James Oliver Curwood. The great room of the castle was used by Curwood to entertain guests, and the castle's largest turret served as Curwood's writing studio. Curwood was a best-selling author of thirty-three novels, and the first author to make a million dollars from movies. More than 190 movies, short films and TV shows have been made of Curwood's books and stories, including The Bear. Curwood Castle is now a museum that contains period antiques, and Curwood books, photos, and movie posters. It also exhibits memorabilia from the life of another one of Owosso's great native sons, Thomas E. Dewey.
Owosso's Thomas E. Dewey, of course, was the famous lawyer, author, mob-busting District Attorney of New York City, three term Governor of New York State, and the Republican presidential nominee in 1944 and 1948. He is revered for running one of the most remarkably honest and effective state government administrations in history. He also passed America's first state law that banned discrimination in hiring.
Just south of Curwood Castle is Comstock Cabin. It is Owosso's first permanent dwelling, which was built in 1836 by Judge Elias Comstock. Comstock Cabin also now serves as a museum that holds period antiques.
On the south side of the Shiawassee River Walking and Bicycle Bridge is the Shiawassee Arts Council Gallery. (The white building on the left side of the screen.) The gallery exhibits two original oil masterpieces, and one original colored pencil masterpiece, by Owosso native Frederick Carl Frieseke - a man who, during his lifetime, became America's best known painter internationally and is today regarded as one of history's greatest artists. The gallery also exhibits and sells prints, original works of dozens of other artists, holds art classes, competitions, and has exhibitions scheduled throughout the year. The grounds surrounding the Gallery include the sculpture Renewal by Louis Marinaro.
One block to the west is the Shiawassee District Library Owosso, a Carnegie Library which contains another masterpiece, this one by another Owosso native and world-renown artist, Alice R. Fisher. The library also displays a magnificent bust of Owosso native, congressman and senator Charles A. Towne - The Cicero of the Senate and the only person to have served in the U. S. Congress from two different states.
The large brown brick building across the river is the old Owosso Armory - the second armory to have been built in Owosso. Since the 1860s, thousands of servicemen and women from Owosso have met the call and contributed greatly to defend America. Over the years, the Owosso Armory has also served as an entertainment venue and hosted many nationally-prominent swing and rock 'n roll bands.
Behind the Owosso Armory is the Owosso Middle School, which originally served as Owosso High School - a school that has educated nearly one hundred people from Owosso whose lives have made national and/or international impact - including a Nobel Prize winner, a Peabody Award winner, an Emmy Award winner, a Maxwell Award winner, a dozen world-renowned scientists, five university presidents, three generals, two admirals, famous athletes, radio and TV stars in the U. S. and Europe, famous ministers and a famous Rabbi, the originator of the homecoming tradition that spread to nearly all colleges and high schools throughout the United States, etc. Plus Owosso has two governors, a Medal of Honor winner, a Pulitzer Prize winner, the first woman to obtain a commercial chauffeur's license, a Miss Michigan, the designer of the Jefferson Nickel, a Playmate of the Month, a rock star, an American who was Germany's Woman of the Year, famous journalists and a cartoonist, over thirty-five best selling, award-winning and/or classic authors, several captains of industry, etc. All of this and much more from a small city of slightly over 14,000 citizens that is nearly surrounded by agriculture.
Along the banks of the river behind the Owosso Middle School is the Mitchell Amphitheater, which hosts concerts throughout each summer.
There is something very special about Owosso, Michigan.

James Oliver Curwood - Danger Trail Chapter 1; The Girl Of The Snows

At least eighteen motion pictures have been based on or directly inspired by his novels and short stories. At the time of his death, he was the highest paid (per word) author in the world. His writing studio, Curwood Castle, is now a museum in Owosso, Michigan. Curwood was born in Owosso, Michigan, the youngest of four children.
He left high school before graduation, but passed the entrance exam to the University of Michigan, where he enrolled in the English department and studied journalism. After two years, he quit college to become a reporter. In 1900, Curwood sold his first story while working for the Detroit News-Tribune. By 1909 he had saved enough money to travel to the Canadian northwest, a trip that provided the inspiration for his wilderness adventure stories. The success of his novels afforded him the opportunity to return to the Yukon and Alaska for several months each year that allowed him to write more than thirty such books.
By 1922, Curwood's writings had made him a very wealthy man and he fulfilled a childhood fantasy by building Curwood Castle in Owosso. Constructed in the style of an 18th-century French chateau, the estate overlooked the Shiawassee River. In one of the homes' two large turrets, Curwood set up his writing studio. He also owned a camp in a remote area in Baraga County, Michigan, near the Huron Mountains as well as a cabin in Roscommon, Michigan.
Curwood was an avid hunter in his youth, however, as he grew older, he became an advocate of environmentalism and was appointed to the Michigan Conservation Commission in 1926. The change in his attitude toward wildlife can be best expressed by a quote from The Grizzly King: The greatest thrill is not to kill but to let live. In 1927, while on a fishing trip in Florida, Curwood was bitten on the thigh by what was believed to have been a spider and he had an immediate allergic reaction. Health problems related to the bite escalated over the next few months as an infection set in. He died soon after in his nearby home on Williams Street at the age of 49. Curwood was interred in Oak Hill Cemetery (Owosso) in a family plot.

The Armory Project
Located in historic downtown Owosso, MI. at Exchange and Water Streets on the banks of the beautiful Shiawassee River, The Armory has stood for nearly a century as a symbol of military and community strength and pride. It is listed on the coveted National Register of Historic Places along with many other places in Shiawassee County. Now The Armory is ready to enter the next chapter of its life through redevelopment into collaborative office and community space that will promote entrepreneurship and bring together organizations and small businesses whose success will continue to build on the revitalization of the regional economy.
The Shiawassee Regional Chamber of Commerce entered into a purchase agreement with the Michigan Department of Military and Veterans’ Affairs in 2013 and is currently finishing a nine-month effort to determine the feasibility of buying the building and proceeding with redevelopment. Work to-date has included architectural and engineering work, environmental testing, tenant engagement, and funding and incentive research and application. The chamber’s is one of many exciting efforts statewide to reutilize historic downtown buildings and capitalize on opportunities to use a number of state and federal incentives to bring communities new life through collaboration and vision.

Nate Henne Sworn In As Owosso City Manager
Owosso, Michigan – Nate Henne sworn in, Wednesday, as the City of Owosso’s new City Manager. Nate, a former Owosso native and lastly the City Manager of Springfield Michigan, was sworn in by Mayor Chris Eveleth at the Curwood Castle on March 28, 2018.
Nate takes the place of Don Crawford who retired after having served more than 40 years as a city manager around the country, including eight years in Owosso.
Nate attended Michigan State University, where he earned his bachelor's degree in Public Policy and Administration. He earned his Master's Degree in Public Administration from Central Michigan University. Nate was awarded a graduate school fellowship from Central Michigan University in 2012. Nate served his fellowship with the City of Mason Mi. After his fellowship Nate became the Town Manager for Lake, City Colorado.
On December 2, 2013 Nate became the City Manager of Springfield Michigan. When the position of City Manager came available in Owosso, Nate applied and after the Owosso City Council had interviewed several including Nate, the Council voted to hire Nate.
It was a full “Castle” with many of Nates friends and family joining with city staff and several well wishers to witness the swearing in ceremony.

ShiaTown Shiawassee County - Capitol of Michigan
Shia Town Shiawassee County Capitol of Michigan historical park located on Newburg Rd. at Bennington Rd. in Shiawassee County. Shiawassee Town or Shiatown was mapped out to become the capitol of Michigan in 1837. It is said that it was the capitol for one day as the state records were moved from Detroit to Lansing.
This park has a pavillion for picnics, porta john, swings, slide and more. Very nice quiet park situated on the west bank of the Shiawassee River near the Shiatown dam at Vernon Rd.
The park has a veteran memorial marker and a school marker with school bell.
National Motorcycle Museum - Anamosa Iowa
The National Motorcycle Museum was founded in 1989 by people who love motorcycling and it thrives today because of their sound plan. Engineers, racers, bike builders, tuners and others as far back as the late 1800′s built the groundwork for what motorcycling has become. The National Motorcycle Museum’s goal is to present their passion, and ours, through fine interpretive exhibits built around a fine collection of machines and historical objects from around the world.
With your generous support we have expanded the list of motorcycles on display from 40 to over 450. Many motorcycles are on loan from private collectors from around the world. The collection of memorabilia, antique motorcycle toys, photos and posters has also grown tremendously. If you are a collector of one or more machines, there may be room for your motorcycle in the galleries of the National Motorcycle Museum.
Our breakthrough for 2010 is the adaptive reuse of a structure on the outskirts of Anamosa over twice the size of the old downtown location. With a location just off U.S. 151, more parking and single story architecture we are better able to handle bus tours and large groups as well as create and produce exciting special events on our grounds.
