The Black Hills (Pahá Sápa in Lakota, Moʼȯhta-voʼhonáaeva in Cheyenne) are a small, isolated mountain range rising from the Great Plains of North America in western South Dakota and extending into Wyoming, USA.[1] Set off from the main body of the Rocky Mountains, the region is something of a geological anomaly—accurately described as an island of trees in a sea of grass. The Black Hills encompass the Black Hills National Forest and are home to the tallest peaks of continental North America east of the Rockies.
The name Black Hills is a translation of the Lakota Pahá Sápa. The hills were so-called because of their dark appearance from a distance, as they were covered in trees.[2]
Native Americans have a long history in the Black Hills. After conquering the Cheyenne in 1776, the Lakota took over the territory of the Black Hills, which became central to their culture. When European Americans discovered gold there in 1874, as a result of George Armstrong Custer's Black Hills Expedition, erstwhile miners swept into the area in a gold rush; the US government re-assigned the Lakota, against their wishes, to other reservations in western South Dakota. Unlike the rest of the Dakotas, the Black Hills were settled by European Americans primarily from population centers to the west and south of the region, as miners flocked there from earlier gold boom locations in Colorado and Montana.
Today, the combined population of the nearby reservations and Ellsworth Air Force Base create a unique diversity different from that of the rest of Wyoming or South Dakota. As the economy of the Black Hills has shifted from natural resources (mining and timber), the hospitality and tourism industry has grown to take its place. The major tourist spots include Mount Rushmore, Custer State Park, Crazy Horse Memorial, and the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally.(wikipedia)

Great Plains is the culmination of a collaboration between artist and storyteller Andrew Hogarth and Sydney musician Chris Fisher. The album comprises eleven songs with concepts derived from Hogarth’s love of Native American and Plains War history, his extensive travels throughout the USA and the honouring of oral history traditions through to Fisher’s observations of love, life and universal struggle.
Great Plains is dedicated to the memory of Southern Cheyenne Bowstring Warrior Society War Chief Medicine Water (1835-1926). The inspired and tenacious resistance of the Cheyenne and Lakota Nations to stop the tide of America’s Manifest Destiny in the period of 1854-1890 underpins many of the songs however it is the triumph of the human spirit that unifies the album.
The album was written and recorded over an eighteen month period from 2000-2001 under the guidance of producer and recording engineer Adam Barns at Smokin & Jokin Recording Studios in Artarmon, Australia.
Andrew Hogarth is a native of Scotland, long time resident of Australia and a world traveller. His interest in Native American culture was ignited early in his youth and has led him to travel some 200,000 miles throughout the Great Plains and Southwest of the United States of America over a thirty-two year period. Hogarth’s extensive fieldwork has resulted in four photographic collections and the publication of six books.
His photographic collection Powwow: Native American Celebration was one of only fourteen to be chosen from a worldwide call for submissions by Exhibits USA resulting in a three year national tour of the USA. Powwow debuted at the Dr. Martin Luther King National Civil Rights Museum in Memphis, Tennessee in October 2000 with subsequent exhibitions in prominent museums and art galleries across thirteen USA states.
Chris Fisher is a multi instrumentalist and writer/composer with a passion for music. Chris collaborated with Andrew Hogarth on creating the Great Plains album that highlights stories about the Lakota-Sioux and Cheyenne Nations fight to preserve their ancestral homelands during the war years 1854-1890 against the United States Military . During that same period Chris was also a singer/songwriter for the heavy metal band Pulse 8.
Chris has also written and recorded a vast collection of songs in his home based studio, covering many different genres of traditional and contemporary music and has collaborated with several talented independent artists, both established and up-and-coming.
Today Chris lives in the city of Wollongong with his wife and children. At present he is working on solo projects when his busy schedule permits.
Adam Barns is a audio engineer / producer / bass player / music appreciator. Adam has been working in recording studios for over 10 years, owned and ran the infamous Smokin & Jokin Recording Studio in Artarmon, Sydney, Australia for seven years where he produced over 150 albums, EP's and demos for bands such as: Unpaid Debt, The Porkers, Bagster, The Casino Rumblers, Zombie Ghost Train, Heifer, Samsara and Age Of Menace.
Today Adam works as a freelance Producer/Engineer in several recording studios across Sydney whilst also setting up a temporary space called The Hangar in Sydney's west that served as a recording space for a few personal projects.
Adam plays bass in two bands, and know that when you record it really helps to be in the studio with someone who has an understanding of the bands sound and production style. Adam co-produced Great Plains with Chris and Andrew creating a sound that is similar in style to music icons Robbie Robertson, Buffy Saint Marie and John Trudell.

Sica Hollow Trail of the Spirits Sisseton South Dakota
Sica Hollow Trail of the Spirits Sisseton South Dakota
Sica Hollow Trail of the Spirits has many myths and legends passed on from Native Americans to the white settlers. These myths and legends are still alive today. Some say Sica Hollow Trail of the Spirits is haunted, bigfoot lives there, and/or stories of hobbits or little people.
When visiting Sica Hollow Trail of the Spirits I found nothing but beauty and greenery. I truly enjoyed hearing the streams flowing, and then finding them hidden amongst the brush.
I can now scratch Sica Hollow Trail of the Spirits off my bucket list.

Rib Mountain State Park (near Wausau, WI) - May 1, 2011
Visit by twin sisters to Rib Mountain State Park, near Wausau, Wisconsin (Marathon County). There was a reason we were just about the only people at the park -- 30+ mph winds and snow flurries -- and we weren't there very long. The conditions were a bit much for May.
Rib Mountain presents the second highest point (elevation of 1940 ft., according to the sign) in Wisconsin. It is visible for something like 40 miles from the farm fields to the west. (The state high point is not a mountain; it is a hill -- Timms Hill.)

Chicken Out Ridge, Borah Peak, Idaho
Borah Peak, Idaho's high point, sits at an elevation of 3,859 metres (12,662 feet). Chicken Out Ridge, a common turnaround point for those in doubt about reaching the summit, is located at about 3,500 metres (11,500 feet).
As the highest point in Idaho, Borah Peak (also known as Mount Borah or Beauty Peak) is one of the most prominent peaks in the contiguous states. It's located in the central section of the Lost River Range, within the Challis National Forest in eastern Custer County. The peak is named for William Borah (1865--1940), a prominent U.S. Senator from Idaho (1907--1940).
Despite the strong winds at the time I made this recording, there was still a lot of haze in there area due to ongoing fores fires throughout the western states...
