Mayor Bowser Celebrates Uber Greenlight Hub in Ward 7, 10/19/17
Mayor Muriel Bowser announces that Uber will open a new Greenlight Hub, a state-of-the-art support and resource center for local Uber drivers, at the East River Park Shopping Center in Ward 7.
Uber’s DC Greenlight Hub will result in the creation of 25 full-time jobs, millions of dollars in investment into the location, and access to support services for thousands of Uber partners.
Uber is accepting bids exclusively from DC-based Small Business Enterprises for the general contract.
“A Greenlight Hub at East River Park means good paying jobs for Washingtonians, contracts for local small businesses, and easier access to supports for our residents who drive with Uber,” said Mayor Bowser. “As we continue our focus on job creation and equitable development in all eight wards, we are excited to work hand-in-hand with Uber to spread prosperity and create more pathways to the middle class for DC residents.”
Uber Greenlight Hubs serve as central locations for Uber drivers and prospective drivers to get in-person attention, answers to questions, assistance resolving issues, and access to a network of fellow drivers and UberEATS couriers. As Uber’s flagship resource and support facility for the DC region, this new Greenlight Hub will provide services, guidance, and assistance to thousands of Uber drivers weekly. Over the next year, Uber plans to invest millions of dollars in this new location and supporting functions. The renovations and build-out of the 8,200 square-foot facility are expected to be complete by late spring 2018.
This announcement comes on the heels of the unveiling of the modernized American Jobs Center Headquarters (AJC-HQ), also located in Ward 7. After extensive community outreach, in which the DC Department of Employment Services (DOES) solicited customer feedback, the agency updated the job center with state-of-the-art equipment that will streamline the customer service experience for residents seeking DOES services.
Since January 2015, the unemployment rate in Washington, DC has dropped by 1.1 percentage points, including decreases in all eight wards. Over the past year, DOES has served more than 12,000 youth, and since 2015, the agency has connected more than 100,000 job seekers and businesses through trainings, employment services, job fairs, and work-based learning programs. In just the past year, the Bowser Administration launched new job training programs like Solar Works DC, opened the DC Infrastructure Academy, and launched Apprenticeship DC, a unique collection of grants, customized programs, and apprenticeship offerings that will increase the number of residents enrolled in apprenticeship programs.
#ObviouslyDC Week
Today’s event is part of #ObviouslyDC Week. Throughout the week, the Mayor is highlighting why Washington, DC is the best city for Amazon HQ2 and celebrating programs and initiatives that are putting more Washingtonians on pathways to the middle class and spreading prosperity to every corner of the District.
Bowser Administration Announces DC Development Opportunities, 3/24/17
Mayor Muriel Bowser is joined by Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development (DMPED) Brian T. Kenner to reveal over 20 projects now available to Washington, DC’s development community.
The announcement came at DMPED’s March Madness, an annual effort to create more quality affordable housing, support small and local business, and expand job opportunities for DC residents.
“Continued development means jobs and housing. That is consistent with our push for inclusive prosperity, which starts with ensuring every DC resident has access to safe and affordable housing, a good paying job, and opportunities to share in our continued economic growth,” said Mayor Bowser. “Over the past two years, we have worked to create unprecedented levels of engagement and transparency. By using tools like OurRFP, we are putting residents on the front end of deciding the future of their neighborhoods, and with events like March Madness, we are forecasting our development opportunities for residents, nonprofits and business owners so all have an opportunity to participate.”

Conversation on the Omar Ibn Said Collection
Scholars discussed the autobiography of Omar Ibn Said, the only known autobiography by a slave written in Arabic in the United States. It is a historically unique and important primary source for those trying to understand the connections between the Muslim communities in Western Africa and the slaves who continued to practice Islamic faith after being captured during the Atlantic slave trade.

Secretary of Veterans Affairs Robert Wilkie State of VA Community Town Hall
Secretary of Veterans Affairs Robert Wilkie hosted his first State of VA Community Town Hall on September 27, 2018. The secretary and eight guest panelists highlighted the activity and direction of VA since his appointment to lead the department in July.
“VA exists to make life easier for Veterans,” Wilkie recently told the crowd of Veterans at the AMVETS annual convention. “So my prime directive is customer service. When a Veteran comes in to VA, it is not up to him to get VA to say ‘yes.’ It is up to VA to give the Veteran tools.”
The secretary and panelists discussed how VA is focused on becoming the leader in customer experience and improving services to our nation’s Veterans through various initiatives such as engagement with community partners, leaders, advocates, state/county VA departments, Department of Defense, Veteran Service Organizations, and community Veterans engagement boards.
The secretary engaged Veterans directly during this webcast’s live question and answer session. All attendants were invited to submit questions during the webcast.
Panelists:
Jim Wartski – Veterans Experience Office
Dr. Richard Stone – Veterans Health Administration
Dr. Paul Lawrence – Veterans Benefits Administration
Randy Reeves – National Cemetery Administration
Alfie Alvarado-Ramos – National Association of State Directors of Veterans Affairs
Herman Breuer – National Association of County Veterans Service Officers
