Custom House Square Belfast - 360 Degree Video
Inaugurated in 2004, the Custom House Square is a public open space located to the west of the Custom House in Belfast. The area dates back to the 1700s when it was utilized as the Salthouse Dock and later on as the Lime Kiln Dock.
The docks were backfilled in 1846 to create Albert Square and Queen’s Square and the Custom House was built from 1854 to 1857, followed by the Albert Memorial Clock between 1865 and 1870 ( By the late 20th century the region had become dominated by car parking areas, road infrastructure and bus traffic. In the 2000s, the Calder Fountain was restored and moved to a location nearer to its original position. On the historic line of the culverted Farset River a linear water feature was installed.
The Customs House is a Victorian building, designed by the architect Charles Lanyon (1813-1889) in the High Italian Renaissance or Palazzo style, established at a time when Belfast became one of the great industrial and trading centers of Victorian England. During the 19th and 20th centuries, orators would speak to the crowds right at the steps of the Customs House. Author Anthony Trollope also worked for the General Post Office at the Customs House in Belfast for a number of years as he lived in the city. Aside from his literary career, Trollope was also the inventor of the pillar-box.
Nowadays, the Custom House hosts various activities from family-orientated performances and activities to large-scale music concerts, D.J. performances and circus-style performance events for both adults and children.
Game Of Thrones: White Walkers Pay a Visit to Custom House Square - The infamous White Walkers from the hit HBO show Game of Thrones, that is filmed in Belfast, hit Custom House Square in the city and turned the famous fountains to ice. The exhibitions and installations all part of Tourism Ireland’s latest social media campaign, created in partnership with HBO® to showcase Northern Ireland around the world.
The campaign has successfully organized a series of Game of Thrones-themed events – with fantastical props from the hit TV series appearing in surprising locations around Belfast and Northern Ireland.
Commenting on their great efforts, Niall Gibbons, CEO of Tourism Ireland, said, “We are delighted to continue our partnership with HBO in 2015, to highlight Belfast and Northern Ireland – through the exciting events of Game of Thrones – on the global stage. The campaign is building on the huge success of last year – when our campaign generated almost one million clicks, comments and shares and reached about 100 million fans across the world. We are reaching out to the show’s global fanbase – bringing Northern Ireland to the attention of Game of Thrones fans worldwide in a fun and innovative way. The fans will see our videos and photos, spiking their curiosity about the landscapes and locations featured in the series and inspiring them to come and explore them for themselves.
Designed in the High Italian Renaissance or Palazzo style, visitors will find on the side of the building that faces the river statues of angels and classical deities that seem to represent Manufacture, Commerce, Industry and Peace, while the figures in the center represent Britannia, Neptune and Mercury.

Custom House Speaker Sculpture, Trollope Plaque, Belfast
I've wandered down into Custom House Square Belfast, now designated as part of Titanic Quarter. I've arrived in front of the Charles Lanyon 1857 built Custom House. This is an area of Belfast that I have never ever visited. I never had any reason to go there. So I was rather surprised about what I stumbled across in a few short minutes. ( I hope to return here and film a more detailed video. )
First of all we have the magnificent Custom House building itself dating from 1857 -architect Charles Lanyon. ( Apparently there is some dispute as to who was responsible Lanyon or
Samuel Ferris. ) The Customs House in the High Italian Renaissance or Palazzo style is the finest neoclassical building in Belfast.
Then there is a fine sculpture titled the speaker by Gareth Knowles and then there is a blue plaque up on the balconey telling us that famous chronicler/writer Anthony Trollope worked at the Custom House Belfast building as a postal surveyor. ( I did not know he had even visited Ireland north or south! )
The Customs House has literary associations with novelist Anthony Trollope, who worked here briefly before being transferred to Dublin. When working in the Post Office in Ireland, Trollope was promoted to the position of Surveyor in 1853 and spent the next eighteen months as an administrator of the postal system in the island's northern counties. He and his family probably lived on the Lisburn Road, south of the town's centre, and then moved to White-abbey, north of Belfast. Here he completed the first of his Barsetshire Novels, The Warden, in 1855.
Gareth Knowles Sculpture The Speaker Custom House Belfast
The steps of the Customs House formerly distinguished themselves as the chosen forum for public debate and for many years religious, political and social speakers addressed audiences here up to the 1950s. Knowles obviously had this in mind when he placed his 'Speaker' , bronze, life sized, sculpture near the steps.
Gareth knowles ( born 1965 -53yrs old ) is a very well known and respected Engilsh sculptor.
His life journey has been led by his passion to sculpt and has taken him from an idyllic Wiltshire village to the wilds of rural Donegal Ireland, to the orange blossom coast on a Spanish mountainside, where he now lives with his family and animals. He has made working models for the film industry, created birds of prey for Arabian royalty, built an exquisite dragon from semi-precious stones and shared a dream with his hero, legendary film director Ray Harryhausen, to sculpt a giant depiction of Britain’s greatest explorer David Livingstone being attacked by a lion.
Gareth works from bespoke thimble-sized miniatures to monumental pieces, across ceramic, bronze, silver and gold.
Clients include Garrard Crown Jewellers, David Morris Jewellers and The National Trust.

March for a Future
Commemorating Outdoor Relief Strike
Rally @ Custom House Square, March the Shankill & Falls
In the thirties, there was mass unemployment in Belfast in the midst of a capitalist economic crisis. In order to survive, the unemployed either had to degrade themselves by begging 'Guardians' - representatives of the rich - for poverty benefits (outdoor relief) or face the nightmare of the workhouse. Young men were forced into back breaking work just to get a few pennies for themselves and their families.
The parallels with today are striking. One in five young people here are unemployed because of bosses and politicians slashing jobs. The benefits available are barely enough to live on. Now, schemes like Steps to Work and Workfare are turning unemployed young people in cheap or even free labour for big business, undermining real jobs. Combined with cuts to education and attacks on workers' rights, our generation is being robbed of a future.
In October 1932, thousands of outdoor relief workers in Belfast went on strike to fight for their dignity and benefits they could live on. With the support of the whole working-class, they organised mass and rallies. The struggle united Catholic and Protestant workers in the face of violence from bigots and the state. After two weeks of struggle, they won significant concessions.
Youth Fight for Jobs has called this march from Custom House Square - where the rally that announced the strike was held - through the Shankill and Falls - the heartlands of the struggle - and ending with a rally at City Hall. We want to commemorate the heroic struggle of 1932 and to send a message to the politicians and bosses that we will fight back too!
