Historic Fish Hatchery - Spearfish, South Dakota
One of the most beautiful settings for a fish hatchery I have ever seen is at Tthe D.C. Booth Historic National Fish Hatchery. Located in lovely Spearfish, South Dakota, the historic hatchery contains ponds and buildings established in 1896 and completed in 1899. Natural stone is used from the area. A walk through the grounds of this trout hatchery reminds you of a Blue-Ribbon trout stream filled with hungry trout!
The D.C. Booth Historic National Fish Hatchery SD
The D.C. Booth Historic National Fish Hatchery and Archives, also known as the Spearfish Fisheries Center or Spearfish Fisheries Complex and formerly known as the Spearfish National Fish Hatchery, is one of 70 fish hatcheries that were opened by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service as part of the National Fish Hatchery System. The hatchery was established near Spearfish, South Dakota in 1896, with the purpose of introducing and establishing populations of trout in the Black Hills of South Dakota and Wyoming. It is one of the oldest fish hatcheries in the United States[1] and is the second-oldest in the American West.[2] The hatchery spawns and releases about 20,000 to 30,000 rainbow trout each year.[2] The hatchery doubles as a fisheries archive with the purpose of preserving records and early historical artifacts.[3] It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.[4][5]

Mount Rushmore, Needles Highway & Fish Hatchery - Full-time RV Living
While still in South Dakota, we had to make sure we stopped at Mount Rushmore. We also decided to drive the Needles Highway after a friend told us how incredible the drive was. It did not disappoint! We also checked out the D.C. Booth Historic National Fish Hatchery in Spearfish, SD since it was right across the street from our campground.

Roughlock & Spearfish Falls - Spearfish, South Dakota
Spearfish, South Dakota was our third stop on our trip out to Yellowstone and Glacier National Parks from Ohio. It was a HOT day at 110 as we cruised through Sturgis just to say we drove through town on our way to Spearfish.
We stayed at Orchard Creek Cottages for the night which was a nice area and had a stream running through the backlot area. Once we settled in we took a trip into the Moutains to find some great scenery and cooler temps. We ended up finding Roughlock Falls and Spearfish Falls which were beautiful. We headed up the road a bit and drove past the sign saying Dances with Wolves Film Site so I had to get out and take a photo of it. I guess it was near the ending of the film where they were riding their horses out of the moutains from what I have heard..
Wasn't sure what we were going to find in Spearfish but it ended up being a nice stay..

Spearfish Canyon, South Dakota - Roadtrip Vlog 4
Visiting Spearfish Canyon, South Dakota where Dances with Wolves was filmed, seeing waterfalls, lush landscapes - a place older than the Grand Canyon! See it at:
Anyone who has seen the movie, Dances with Wolves, may recognize Spearfish Canyon since several scenes were filmed in the area. Spearfish Canyon is actually older than the Grand Canyon in Arizona and was only accessible by horseback until 1893. It’s located in the northern part of the Black Hills in South Dakota. According to legend the Sioux and Cheyenne used to spear fish in the creek and hence the name, Spearfish.
Before building his world famous house, Fallingwater (a National Historic Landmark), Frank Lloyd Wright visited Spearfish Canyon in September 1935 and called it “Unique and unparalleled elsewhere in our country”. With that sort of endorsement, Lex, Sar and I could hardly bypass this beautiful scenic route.
First turn off was for Bridal Veil Falls where thin delicate streams of water cascaded down among the tree leaves and moss covered rocks. It was lovely and did resemble the Victorian lace that it was named for. The turn off for the falls was very easy and there was a crosswalk clearly marked for safely walking across the road. A comfortable viewing platform with a bench beckons the visitor to stay and relax a bit.

PLAYLISTS
Did you know I have a playlist of tech videos from my van build?
I also have a playlist of just travel videos if you don't like all the tech stuff:
============================
I left the rat race to live full time on the road and so can you! The key to freedom is to lower your expenses. In my former life, I managed a company that struggled to stay out of the red. This is where I learned to hone my frugality skills and use them to my own advantage by becoming a minimalist at home. The biggest expense we all have living in a sticks and bricks is our rent or mortgage. We work most of our adult lives to make a bank or landlord / landlady rich! With ever increasing real estate prices and stagnant wages the cost of living has skyrocketed. Many can barely make ends meet and live paycheck to paycheck. You can stop the madness by thinking outside the box and joining this growing movement of full-timers that enjoy van-dwelling or RV living. If you dream about a life of travel you can do it incredibly cheap just by downsizing your lifestyle into a RV or van tiny house and becoming mobile.
In this series, I go from a home in the Los Angeles hills packed full of stuff and owning two cars to full-timing in a Roadtrek campervan in less than 6 months. I buy an old camper van on Craigslist and deck it out just like home with all kinds of technology to make life comfortable on the road. I hope to encourage those that think they can't do it by showing how it CAN be done by planning carefully and taking baby steps.
