Washington D.C. is situated on the east coast of the USA, along the banks of the Potomac River.
Most visitors begin at the National Mall. Zero Milestone is the proposed reference point for distances on all US maps. To the north is the White House. To the south stands the Washington Monument. The US Capitol Building, atop Capitol Hill, is the nation's seat of federal government.
The Mall is also home to many of the nation's Smithsonian buildings, including the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum.
Reflecting Pool is surrounded by tributes to its heroes and founding fathers, including the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, and the Lincoln Memorial.
Washington D.C.'s Capital Bikeshare system makes it easy to reach downtown neighborhoods such as DuPont Circle and Foggy Bottom.
Georgetown is the oldest district in Washington D.C. Wisconsin Avenue and M Street have boutique stores and galleries. To the north is the National Cathedral, the Smithsonian National Zoo and the International Spy Museum.
Just across the Potomac is Arlington National Cemetery.

Washington, D.C., formally the District of Columbia and commonly referred to as Washington or D.C., is the capital of the United States of America. Founded after the American Revolution as the seat of government of the newly independent country, Washington was named after George Washington, first President of the United States and Founding Father. Washington is the principal city of the Washington Metropolitan Area, which has a population of 6,131,977. Washington is described as the political Capital of the World, owing to its status as the seat of the United States Federal Government and numerous international institutions, such as the World Bank and International Monetary Fund. Washington is one of the most visited cities in the world, with more than 20 million annual tourists.
The signing of the Residence Act on July 16, 1790, approved the creation of a capital district located along the Potomac River on the country's East Coast. The U.S. Constitution provided for a federal district under the exclusive jurisdiction of the Congress and the District is therefore not a part of any state. The states of Maryland and Virginia each donated land to form the federal district, which included the pre-existing settlements of Georgetown and Alexandria. Named in honor of President George Washington, the City of Washington was founded in 1791 to serve as the new national capital. In 1846, Congress returned the land originally ceded by Virginia; in 1871, it created a single municipal government for the remaining portion of the District.
Washington had an estimated population of 693,972 as of July 2017. Commuters from the surrounding Maryland and Virginia suburbs raise the city's population to more than one million during the workweek. The Washington metropolitan area, of which the District is the principal city, has a population of over 6 million, the sixth-largest metropolitan statistical area in the country.
All three branches of the U.S. Federal Government are centered in the District: U.S. Congress (legislative), President (executive), and the U.S. Supreme Court (judicial). Washington is home to many national monuments and museums, which are primarily situated on or around the National Mall. The city hosts 177 foreign embassies as well as the headquarters of many international organizations, trade unions, non-profit, lobbying groups, and professional associations, including the Organization of American States, AARP, the National Geographic Society, the Human Rights Campaign, NASA, the International Finance Corporation, and the American Red Cross.
A locally elected mayor and a 13‑member council have governed the District since 1973. However, Congress maintains supreme authority over the city and may overturn local laws. D.C. residents elect a non-voting, at-large congressional delegate to the House of Representatives, but the District has no representation in the Senate.

Boundaries
According to the Washington Post, Foggy Bottom is bordered by Pennsylvania Ave to the north, 17th St NW to the east, Constitution Ave to the South and Rock Creek Parkway to the West. The neighborhoods around Foggy Bottom include the West End, Dupont Circle, Georgetown, and downtown.
Character
Foggy Bottom is one of the top cultural destinations in DC with the Kennedy Center, the shops and restaurants of Georgetown, several embassies, and GW University all located within the community. The Kennedy Center is the top place in DC for shows and the embassies in the neighborhood are always hosting various events. Georgetown, located just blocks away is a great area for dining, shopping, as well as exploring the waterfront area and Dupont Circle is located very close by as well. As far as grocery shopping you have a whole foods and a Trader Joes within walking distance. Overall Foggy Bottom is a convenient urban neighborhood with everything at your doorstep.
Transportation
Foggy Bottom is a centrally located neighborhood with its own metro station which opened in 1977. If you prefer to ride the bus there are several bus routes that serve the neighborhood. This is also a walkable community and many people also ride bikes here. If you prefer to drive, you are just a couple minutes away from major highways like I-66 and the GW parkway, although parking in this neighborhood can be tight since this is an urban neighborhood.
Types of Houses
The types of real estate here including stately, historic row homes, luxury co-ops including the Watergate, as well as large condo buildings. Since you are in a dense, urban, area typically you are not going to get a ton of square footage, and there are not single family homes with yards, however the location is great. The most famous building here, the Watergate is composed of six buildings, 650 residences, and depending on which unity you buy, can offer some amazing views of the Potomac River. Most of the real estate here is condos and co-ops and can be very expensive since this neighborhood is so convenient being just steps outside of Georgetown. Many of the larger buildings here like the Watergate and ---- were built during the 1970s however its common to see the renovations. Be sure to check the co-op or condo fee as well because sometimes those can get a little high.
Conclusion
If you want to live in an urban neighborhood with all of the amenities of DC right at your doorstep then Foggy Bottom is for you. Most of the real estate here are large condos, co-ops, and apartments so if you are looking for a ton of space you may have to go further outside of the city. Residents here love the central location and people pay a premium to live in perhaps the most convenient neighborhood in all of DC.

Washington DC's Smithsonian Museum offers a glimpse into a rare Quran collection.
STORY-LINE
The Art of the Quran. Not something you expect to see in a US museum.
From 7th century Damascus to 16th century Istanbul, more than 60 of the most important Quran manuscripts ever produced are on display at the Sackler Gallery of the Smithsonian Museum in Washington, DC.
And it has taken the Smithsonian almost six years to organise this landmark show.
In the last few years there has been great attention focused on the Quran, on Islam, not always in the most positive light but in a way this has created a space where there is a need of a better understanding of the Quran, says chief curator Massumeh Farhad.
The first major exhibition of Qurans in the United States was made possible thanks to the Museum of Turkish and Islamic Arts in Istanbul.
Forty-eight manuscripts from the Museum of Turkish and Islamic Art in Istanbul are on display in this exhibition and although they all present the same text: the Quran, their production ranges in date from the late 7th century to the late 16th century and from Egypt and Ottoman Turkey in the west to Afghanistan in the east, said Simon Rettig, the museum's top expert on Islamic manuscripts.
Lavishly illuminated and showing the evolution of calligraphy over 1,000 years of history, these Qurans come in all sizes and materials.
Arguably the most eye-catching piece is two gigantic folios, part of a Quran copied in Samarkand in the 15th century.
But for Rettig, the most important manuscript on display is the smallest one. A single volume produced in eastern Iran/western Afghanistan around the year 1020.
It is the first one that used cursive round calligraphy and paper.
That allowed the calligrapher to copy the whole Quran in one single volume of 300 pages, which is quite extraordinary for that time when you think that until then Qurans were copied on parchment in very large angular script, he explains.
Islam's holy text was set in the 7th century and it's identical on every Quran.
But each of the manuscripts is a piece of art in its own right, with a fascinating story of makers and owners behind it.
They were created for the most powerful rulers of the Islamic world and they were often gifts to cement political relationships or prized spoils of war.
Aware of the sensitivity of the topic, the Sackler Gallery curators chose to focus on the artistry and individual history of each of the pieces.
For most of the manuscripts displayed here, it's the first time they've left the Middle East.
The exhibition runs until the end of February 2017.
