Capital Beer: A Heady History of Brewing in Washington, D.C.
Washington Brewery–the city’s first brewery–opened in 1796. Brewer barons like Christian Heurich and Albert Carry dominated the taps of city saloons until production ground to a halt with Prohibition. Only Heurich survived, and when the venerable institution closed in 1956, Washington, DC, was without a brewery for 55 years. Author and beer scholar Garrett Peck taps this history while introducing readers to the bold new brewers leading the capital’s recent craft beer revival. A book signing will follow the program.
Mountaineer GameDay: Crabs and Brews in DC
This week's Taste of the Town takes us to the nation's capital as West Virginia University and BYU meet at FedEx Field. And while it's the home of the Washington Redskins, the stadium is technically in Maryland, so our first stop is Captain White Seafood City for some blue crabs. Then we wash them down across town at DC Brau, the district's first production brewery since 1956.
Crabs and brews -- what could be better?

Boundaries
According to the Washington Post, Foggy Bottom is bordered by Pennsylvania Ave to the north, 17th St NW to the east, Constitution Ave to the South and Rock Creek Parkway to the West. The neighborhoods around Foggy Bottom include the West End, Dupont Circle, Georgetown, and downtown.
Character
Foggy Bottom is one of the top cultural destinations in DC with the Kennedy Center, the shops and restaurants of Georgetown, several embassies, and GW University all located within the community. The Kennedy Center is the top place in DC for shows and the embassies in the neighborhood are always hosting various events. Georgetown, located just blocks away is a great area for dining, shopping, as well as exploring the waterfront area and Dupont Circle is located very close by as well. As far as grocery shopping you have a whole foods and a Trader Joes within walking distance. Overall Foggy Bottom is a convenient urban neighborhood with everything at your doorstep.
Transportation
Foggy Bottom is a centrally located neighborhood with its own metro station which opened in 1977. If you prefer to ride the bus there are several bus routes that serve the neighborhood. This is also a walkable community and many people also ride bikes here. If you prefer to drive, you are just a couple minutes away from major highways like I-66 and the GW parkway, although parking in this neighborhood can be tight since this is an urban neighborhood.
Types of Houses
The types of real estate here including stately, historic row homes, luxury co-ops including the Watergate, as well as large condo buildings. Since you are in a dense, urban, area typically you are not going to get a ton of square footage, and there are not single family homes with yards, however the location is great. The most famous building here, the Watergate is composed of six buildings, 650 residences, and depending on which unity you buy, can offer some amazing views of the Potomac River. Most of the real estate here is condos and co-ops and can be very expensive since this neighborhood is so convenient being just steps outside of Georgetown. Many of the larger buildings here like the Watergate and ---- were built during the 1970s however its common to see the renovations. Be sure to check the co-op or condo fee as well because sometimes those can get a little high.
Conclusion
If you want to live in an urban neighborhood with all of the amenities of DC right at your doorstep then Foggy Bottom is for you. Most of the real estate here are large condos, co-ops, and apartments so if you are looking for a ton of space you may have to go further outside of the city. Residents here love the central location and people pay a premium to live in perhaps the most convenient neighborhood in all of DC.

Why Government Should be Limited. Beer and conversation with Pigweed and Crowhill
The boys discuss why limited government is a good idea, but first they get their lips around El Hefe Speaks, a German Hefeweizen from DC Brau, a DC brewery.
Pigweed starts off with a little history of the District of Columbia, and that leads to a discussion of the limits on government. One of the boys' foundational political principles is that people should have a say in the laws that govern them, and in order to make rulers accountable, they should be as close to the people as possible. We don't want people in Wyoming ruled by bureaucrats in DC who know nothing about Wyoming. At the same time, why the heck doesn't DC have representation in Congress?
When people don't like their government, they have a right to change it. Or so we say in the Declaration of Independence. So ... didn't the south have a right to secede?
What about Bush's idea that every heart longs for democracy? Is democracy the best system of government for everybody? Should Americans promote it in all cases?
No. We want people to be accountable, we want power to be held in check, and we want power to be as local as possible. We also don't want mob rule. Beyond those basics, different systems might work in different situations.
How about federal vs. state vs. local control? When do we need federal standards, and when can we let states be laboratories of democracy? Does this apply to abortion? How about confederate statues?

Harry Reid to DC Mayor - 'I'm on your side. Don't screw this up'
Cameras caught DC Mayor Gray crashing Harry Reid presser on the capitol steps and in the throng of media, Reid said to Gray i am on your side. Don't screw this up. DC has been operating using reserve cash and Gray and Eleanor Holmes Norton both want a a funding bill to help get DC back running again. That is a funding bill even if they they don't get the rest of the government running. Gray's confrontational style could have something to do with the fact that Democrats opposed a stand-alone District funding bill. Congress reportedly controls all District appropriations. Now, in a rare occurrence, local and national politicians in the nation's Capitol are at odds. Gray says the funds are running out and could soon impact the city's transportation infrastructure, utilities and schools.

The Rich in America: Power, Control, Wealth and the Elite Upper Class in the United States
The American upper class describes the sociological concept pertaining to the top layer of society in the United States. About the book:
This social class is most commonly described as consisting of those with great wealth and power and may also be referred to as the Capitalist Class or simply as The Rich. Persons of this class commonly have immense influence in the nation's political and economic institutions as well as public opinion.
Many politicians, heirs to fortunes, top business executives, CEOs, successful venture capitalists and celebrities are considered members of this class. Some prominent and high-rung professionals may also be included if they attain great influence and wealth. The main distinguishing feature of this class, which is estimated to constitute roughly 1% of the population, is the source of income. While the vast majority of persons and households derive their income from salaries, those in the upper class derive their income from investments and capital gains. Estimates for the size of this group commonly vary from 1% to 2%, while some surveys have indicated that as many as 6% of Americans identify as upper class. Sociologist Leonard Beeghley sees wealth as the only significant distinguishing feature of this class and, therefore, refers to this group simply as the rich.
The members of the tiny capitalist class at the top of the hierarchy have an influence on economy and society far beyond their numbers. They make investment decisions that open or close employment opportunities for millions of others. They contribute money to political parties, and they often own media enterprises that allow them influence over the thinking of other classes... The capitalist class strives to perpetuate itself: Assets, lifestyles, values and social networks... are all passed from one generation to the next. -Dennis Gilbert, The American Class Structure, 1998
Sociologists such as W. Lloyd Warner, William Thompson and Joseph Hickey recognize prestige differences between members of the upper class. Established families, prominent professionals and politicians may be deemed to have more prestige than some entertainment celebrities who in turn may have more prestige than the members of local elites. Yet, contemporary sociologists argue that all members of the upper class share such great wealth, influence and assets as their main source of income as to be recognized as members of the same social class. As great financial fortune is the main distinguishing feature of this class, sociologist Leonard Beeghley at the University of Florida identifies all rich households, those with incomes in the top 1% or so, as upper class.
Functional theorists in sociology and economics assert that the existence of social classes is necessary in order to distribute persons so that only the most qualified are able to acquire positions of power, and so that all persons fulfill their occupational duties to the greatest extent of their ability. Notably, this view does not address wealth, which plays an important role in allocating status and power.
In order to make sure that important and complex tasks are handled by qualified and motivated personnel, society offers incentives such as income and prestige. The more scarce qualified applicants are and the more essential the given task is, the larger the incentive will be. Income and prestige which are often used to tell a person's social class, are merely the incentives given to that person for meeting all qualifications to complete an important task that is of high standing in society due to its functional value.
It should be stressed... that a position does not bring power and prestige because it draws a high income. Rather, it draws a high income because it is functionally important and the available personnel is for one reason or another scarce. It is therefore superficial and erroneous to regard high income as the cause of a man's power and prestige, just as it is erroneous to think that a man's fever is the cause of his disease... The economic source of power and prestige is not income primarily, but the ownership of capital goods (including patents, good will, and professional reputation). Such ownership should be distinguished from the possession of consumers' goods, which is an index rather than a cause of social standing. -Kingsley Davis and Wilbert E. Moore, Principles of Stratification.
