DC pedicabber detained near the Lincoln Memorial by US Park Police -- Wed. 8/8/2012
Many pedicab operators in the District of Columbia are continually approached by select officers of the US Park Police. While no rule specifically bans pedicabs from operating on the National Mall, many of these federal agents site ambiguous local regulation - drafted unilaterally by DDOT last year - to issue citations that are almost always dismissed by the DC Adjudication Services. Additionally, several arrests have been made in the past 18 months. In one more dramatic event, an operator was tasered, twice, only for prosecutors to ultimately drop those charges as well. The next criminal trial for a veteran DC operator, charges of resisting arrest when he simply refused to put away his video camera, will take place on Sept. 19 - 21, 500 Indiana Ave. NW, Courtroom 220. Thank you for your continued support of human-powered transportation options on the National Mall.
Washington, DC's Capital Bikeshare: Tax $$$ for Rich, Educated, White Riders
Capital Bikeshare, which rents bikes at more than 165 outdoor stations in the Washington D.C. area, serves highly educated and affluent whites.
There's nothing wrong with that, of course, except that the program has received $16 million in government subsidies, including over $1 million specifically earmarked to address the unique transportation challenges faced by welfare recipients and low-income persons seeking to obtain and maintain employment.
The program is part of a recent explosion in taxpayer-subsidized bike rental services, which have also hit the streets of Chicago, Philadelphia, Boston , Denver, Boulder, Houston, Minneapolis, Broward, Madison, Omaha, San Antonio, and Des Moines.
Capital Bikeshare's latest user survey finds that 95 percent of its regular patrons have college degrees, 53 percent have a Masters or Ph.D., and 80 percent are white. Fully 0 percent have only a high school diploma and just 7 percent make less than $25,000 a year. More than 90 percent were employed and 14 percent reported they were college students, suggesting that very few welfare recipients are using the service.
Capital Bikeshare is run by Portland-based Alta Planning + Design in partnership with four jurisdictions: Alexandria, VA; Arlington, VA; Montgomery County, MD; and the District of Columbia. So far, the program has received $15.9 million[*] in state, local, and federal subsidies.
Why are affluent, educated, and employed whites riding taxpayer-subsidized bikes?
ReasonTV Correspondent Kennedy investigates.
[*]: Government funding for Capital Bikeshare is collected separately by each jurisdiction, and breaks down as follows: District of Columbia ($10.3 million), Montgomery County ($3.1 million), Arlington ($1.9 million), and Alexandria ($600 thousand).

STORYLINE
Several hundred demonstrators on Sunday rallied across from the White House against a possible war with Iraq.
The protesters shouted and waved a US flag with a peace symbol instead of stars in the field of blue.
Ten people who attempted to cross the police barrier were promptly arrested.
President George W. Bush was at the presidential retreat at Camp David, Maryland, for the weekend.
The demonstrators were also protesting racist witchhunts by US authorities following the September 11 attacks.
At an opening rally between the Justice and FBI buildings, demonstrators had expressed outrage over what they see as overreaching law enforcement tactics since the devastating terror attacks.

A DAY AT THE BIG APPLE'S CENTRAL PARK IN NEW YORK, NEW YORK
It was a wonderful, cool, and sunny Saturday, on April 23, 2016. The Pepper Bird Magazine's Africa Teach-In Television Show's Roaming Camera was prowling the Big Apple Community in search community news, events, and/or activities to feature in a future television show.. Fortunately, The Pepper Bird Magazine has friends and supporters across the United States who often offer positive and helpful suggestion to our staff; and one of such suggestions was to hire a Pedi-dirver or horse driven buggy from around Time Square in Manhattan to take us sightseeing or just riding around the city. Heeding their suggestion, our staff were also fortunate to hire Pedi-driver and the only Gold Star Central Park Tour Guide, Moussa Fall (From Senegal, West Africa) for the job. Moussa Fall proved to be an excellent tour guide, who allowed us to record his presentation, and our rewarding tour experience, during our ride through NYC's Central Park. We extend sincere thanks and appreciation to Moussa Fall for his contribution to fulfill the continued mission and objective The Pepper Bird Magazine's Africa Teach-In Television Show to educate other around the world and in Rhode Island about the African and African American people, communities, and cultures,
