London Protests Bush's Visit
Type a name:
This is a protest in London at Parliament Square. Sitting President George W. Bush was on his Farewell to Europe tour at the time. Usually when Bush goes to Europe, millions of people show up to protest. Bush's latest and apparently last visit to Europe drew much smaller crowds.
About 2500 protesters went to Parliament Square in order to march up White Hall and deliver a letter to Bush and the Prime Minister, Gordon Brown.
Police blocked them from doing so.

On the last 'leg' of his 'Farewell Tour' of much of the industrialized western world, President George Bush's visit was greeted in London by scores of people outraged over everything from the civilian deaths in Iraq and Afghanistan to global climate change. Expecting the typical European reception of the U.S. president, security forces were beefed-up everywhere Bush stopped.

Interlaced with whistle-blowing, chants of George Bush: Terrorist!, and drum-beats was the sound of a saxophone coming from somewhere near the police blockade lining the east side of Parliament Square.
David Hurcombe suddenly adopts a serious look and something of a salty tone, as he broke from playing to make his point with rhetorical questions.
Its sad. So many people have died, haven't they? Every life is precious, isn't it? He held up the brassy soprano saxophone he had brought with him. Every Iraqi kid would like to grow up and play a saxophone.

Hurcombe and his wife, Joy, stood with 2000 other protesters before a wall of some 1200 Metro police, later to be replaced with officers in riot gear along the metal barricade that prevented protesters from completing the march as planned through the heart of London's government district to Prime Minister Gordon Brown's residency at 10 Downing Street.

USA: LITTLE ROCK: PRESIDENT CLINTON GIVES RE-ELECTION SPEECH
English/Nat
U-S President Bill Clinton said the stakes are higher than ever in next year's presidential election - and it will be the last time he'll run for office.
Clinton spoke at a one (m) million dollar homecoming fund raiser Friday in Little Rock, Arkansas, held to raise cash for his re-election bid.
The President also expressed anger at Republicans in the Senate for blocking his nomination of Dr Henry Foster as Surgeon General.
In a hoarse voice, President Bill Clinton gave a 41-minute speech Friday to supporters in Little Rock, Arkansas in one of a series of kickoff fund-raisers for the Clinton-Gore re- election process.
Clinton has not yet formally declared his candidacy for next year's presidential election, but his already formed re-election finance committee has been gathering contributions since mid April.
At the one-thousand dollar-a-plate luncheon of lobster, salad and iced tea, the President said he would not be running for office again after the next bid for re-election.
SOUNDBITE:
It's my last election I'll never run for anything else. You'll never have to come of these again. You'll never be dined again. You'll never have to stand in line again if you don't want to, but just know this time, this time the stakes are highest they have ever been, higher than they were in 92 because of where we have moved and where we can go. It is worth the fight and I can't make it without you, but together I think we will.
SUPER CAPTION: U-S President Bill Clinton
The President spoke about how the next presidential race will involve a profound debate on whether government involvement just makes things worse.
But he also warned his audience about the danger of extremists in politics - particularly the Republican right wing.
SOUNDBITE:
So the politics of demonisation, the meanness quota of our politics, the distortion level of it has increased quite a bit in recent years. Now I think it is good to fight and argue, but I think we are around here - way over 200 years - because no matter how the arguments came out we kept this thing going in the middle of the road and forward, not too far left, not too far right, but always forward and that's why we are still around.
SUPER CAPTION: U-S President Bill Clinton
Clinton told his supporters - in the state which he used to run as governor - that he was furious about the decision not to let the nomination of native Arkansan Henry Foster as surgeon general come to the Senate floor.
The president accused Republicans in the Senate of abusing the filibuster process in a way that Democrats never did.
First Lady Hillary Clinton, Vice President Al Gore and Gore's wife Tipper were also present at the fund-raiser and teamed up with the President to denounce Republican tactics and policies.

9/11 Flight 77 Flightpath In Pentagon Dead Grass Four Days Before 9/11
This aerial IKONOS Satellite photo, taken on Sept. 7, 2001 at 11:07 AM shows the claimed official flightpath of Flight 77 worn into the grass, four days before Flight 77 took off. Another 9/11 coincidence that shows patterns created by humans that nature would never create on her own. People lie, circumstances dont. Flight 77 did not crash into the Pentagon on 9/11, the Pentagon staged a fake attack on themselves for budget increase and political power. There is not a single entity on the face of Earth that has killed more human beings than the Pentagon since its construction started on September 11, 1941. Serial killers of whole nations would gladly kill for money and gain, killing men is what they are good at and love to do. The Pentagon is a cancer attached to a peace loving society, that will abuse your troops and steal your wealth. History proves they have done it over and over, rejecting the Constitution and The Declaration of Independence in exchange for global imperialism, conquest, and colonialism. The Pentagon replaces the Constitutional militias and peoples right to defend themselves, with a paid military force abused by the corrupt criminal Commanders In Terror in the White House.

NUCLEAR NIGHTMARES (Fully Closed Captioned)
From the late science writer Nigel Calder comes NUCLEAR NIGHTMARES, a visually frightening examination of the world’s Cold War era nuclear weapon infrastructure. Host Peter Ustinov utilizes his wit and charm to narrate for the viewer how the US command and control system functions in both training and in the event of an actual retaliatory nuclear strike, and the chilling means by which airpower, nuclear submarines and underground ICBM launch pads are employed to ensure absolute vengeance on the aggressor. Throughout the film, Ustinov colorfully illustrates several scenarios of what might happen if the missiles are unleashed and so commences “the war that must never happen.”

USA: SINN FEIN LEADER GERRY ADAMS VISIT
English/Nat
Sinn Fein leader Gerry Adams Wednesday praised Washington for its role in the Northern Ireland peace process.
Adams made his comments as he wrapped up his trip to the US, during which he met several top members of the Clinton administration.
But Adams refused to give in to a British demand that the IRA give up its guns before coming to the negotiating table.
He called it an unreasonable and unprecedented demand in the history of armed struggle.
Gerry Adams continued his official tour of Washington DC Wednesday, talking to State Department officials and meeting Vice-President Al Gore at the White House.
Pressed for details about what was being done to revive the stalled peace talks, the leader of the IRA's political wing was short on specifics.
SOUNDBITE:
We obviously are all trying to find formulas which will move our peace process forward.
SUPER CAPTION: Gerry Adams, Sinn Fein Leader
The Sinn Fein leader offered warm praise for the Clinton administration for its role in the peace process.
SOUNDBITE:
The US administration has led a very constructive, even-handed and balanced role in the peace process since its initiation and I'm encouraged and reassured that it will continue to do so.
SUPER CAPTION: Gerry Adams, Sinn Fein Leader
The White House has endorsed the idea of setting up an international body to handle the thorny issue of disarmament as a first step toward ending British rule in Northern Ireland.
The British say the IRA must give up its weapons before it can step up to the negotiating table.
At a speaking engagement at Georgetown University, Adams repeated his call for all parties to disarm and for comprehensive reforms.
SOUNDBITE:
There needs to be a total demilitarisation of the situation. All of the guns taken permanently out of Irish politics, the prisoners released, the repressive legislation decommissioned. And there needs to be a democratisation of the situation of people starting to move and to an era where discrimination stops.
SUPER CAPTION: Gerry Adams, Sinn Fein Leader
Adams told the mostly sympathetic audience that unilateral disarmament was an unrealistic option for the IRA.
He explained that if the tables were turned, Sinn Fein would not impose such a precondition.
SOUNDBITE:
So we could put the same demand, but it's an unreasonable demand. So people who get involved, in an armed struggle, get involved in armed struggle because as they see it there is no alternative. So, what you do is, you build the alternative. You build confidence in the alternative and then you bring about a situation where they will all disarm. Not as a precondition for talks but as part of a process to build peace and that's the way to go forward.
SUPER CAPTION: Gerry Adams, Sinn Fein Leader
While the IRA is still regarded as a terrorist organisation by many, the fact remains that Northern Ireland has enjoyed a relative peace for the past 13 months.
And Adams said he remained optimistic, telling his supporters that if a peace conference was arranged, he would do business with the Unionists.

17. SOUNDBITE (English) Tom Schatz, President of Citizens Against Government Waste:
Most of the expansion has nothing to do with security. It has to do with the fact that a huge hole was being dug underneath the Capitol, or next to the Capitol. And it provided the opportunity for members of Congress to fill it with all kinds of excess space for themselves. Those additional offices are not going to be used by the public.

STORYLINE:
Washington's three-story underground Capitol Visitor Centre is taking shape, and designers say they hope it will make a trip to the Capitol safer, more comfortable and more tourist-friendly.
Visitors will no longer need to line up outdoors, enduring Washington's steamy summer heat or winter chill as they wait for a tour of the historic halls of Congress.
Instead, they'll enter the Capitol from below, inside a sprawling, climate-controlled subterranean space where up to 5-thousand visitors can spend time while waiting to begin the free, guided tour.
Designers say the facility will contain educational opportunities including a short historical movie, a 3-D model of the Capitol dome and a collection of artifacts and documents.
It will also have virtual Senate and House galleries where visitors can watch televised proceedings when Congress is in session.
A series of skylights have been built so that the underground space will receive natural light and provide unobstructed views of the Capitol dome.
Designers are also using stone and marble work inside the centre in a bid to evoke the Capitol's look and feel.
Security was a big issue during the design of the visitors centre.
After two police officers were shot by an intruder in 1998, authorities wanted more stringent security checks - and in a location away from the main building.
And after the September 11 terror attacks, security concerns slowed the project and raised its price tag.
Architect Alan Hantman says: When you have literally millions of people coming on an annual basis, they don't know basically where the threat is coming. So the concept of having a remote screening area for the Capitol was key to this entire project.
